Hear that shit:

Her live shit is the kicker - both times I've seen her I've been floored by her snarling, acrobatic SPASTITUDE. (check the psycho flix on dandiwind.com ) She's gotten tons of press out here and now she's off to do the Montreal scene. I like her music, she's SO marketable cuz on and off stage she's so perfectly manic and angelic, but do you think she's worth signing/developing? I'm torn. She wants a DVD included in her release, which is the only sticking point so far. SUCH a rad girl though. What do you think?

BEST FUCKING BIO/LIFESTORY EVER

THE FOLLOWING IS COMPLETELY TRUE:

I was conceived in a tent.
My birthname is Dandilion Wind Opaine.
I was born and raised in a cabin without running water, right next to a taxidermy museum housed in a concrete igloo. I lived there for ten years before we drove the 14 hours down to Vancouver. I was impressed by the revolving billboards in the big city because I’d never seen them before.

I met my longtime collaborator Szam Findlay first when we were both 13 at winter camp. I had a crush on him but we didn’t speak or interact for a few years. Then we were cast together in a high school play. Szam introduced me to Alejandro Jodorowsky films and we started our own experimental theatre group in 2000 while I attended Emily Carr art college.

The next year and a half were spent bankrupting ourselves creating a massive solo album/artbook problem for Szam called “Die Hautfabrik” which was licensed in 2002 to Resonant Recordings UK (Acid Mothers Temple / Esmerine etc.) I did some vocals on the mostly instrumental album as well as sculptures for the booklet. The cd sold poorly but garnered favorable press from BBC / The Wire / AMG/ Stylus / and assorted Japanese + Eastern European oddballs… Nonetheless sculpture remains my lifelong passion.

We started the Dandi Wind project in late 2003 as a way to meld our love of theatre/performance with challenging but not inaccessible music. Our songs are about honest incidents that surround us. Since we live in the downtown eastside of Vancouver (the most depressed slum in Canada; the most junkies per capita in North America) our songs are sometimes grim… Currently I live next to the train tracks and the rendering plant where they turn dead pets into glue while pumping cancerous smoke and industrial noise into my mind all day. I’ve escaped to Brazil and Japan on occasion but somehow got stuck in the slums there too.

We make this music because we need to get away from this city and because we have something to offer you don’t find anymore: Charisma and passion. I love to perform and make people FEEL something. We write the lyrics together and Szam does all the music, production and design. We are absolutely independent. This album cost NOTHING to record and was made with a few unpopular decade old synths, a single mic and a monophonic Pentium 2 soundcard. If I can walk offstage unaided then I’ve not delivered a true Dandi Wind performance.

I'd hit it too. In person she's like this tiny fragile TOY PERSON that sometimes just explodes and tries to dance herself to DEATH while rapping and shit. The aftermath is so gully.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah whadda fuck she know about grime. she know jack shit bout proper beats. go and listen to bruza and kano they work ass off they are the scene they done the pas and this fake bitch gets peeps for doin NUTHIN!

That's not Sov., dummies! (I getcha ;])

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't speak about the live show, but her ep release in Canada, Bait The Traps, is odious. It doesn't translate to disc AT ALL. Flaccid, yawn inducing electro-clash with Gary Glitter leanings.

dug: sign her, even if it means releasing the DVD. I was thinking about this today and she is going places. I remember seeing her at Misanthropy at the end of last summer and being blown away. My friends however are not so sure. Regardless, I think a 12 inch split with Duchess would work perfectly.

hi btw.

NORTH, Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be bringing her to do a show in nyc this summer... and am getting my friend to sign them to his label in australia. you better hurry.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

also they're going to be featured in a nyc magazine i'm working on - coming out in may. annie is on the cover, and stuff w/ jt leroy and m83. so i think maybe buzz soon.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Word North, I'm talking to Duchess now - the both of them being in Montreal this summer, shit could be amazing my friend - the 12' (plus the FuckMeUSA one) is exactly what we're thinking about. $ee you at the Dizzee show btw.

Phil I basically said yeah to the not-yet-released CD only but she really really wants the DVD, which I'm super iffy about, but somethings def. going to happen. At worst we'll have to 'share'. Mail me foo let's make some money.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 24 March 2005 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno if its worth my (not very valuable) time to do this though - like finding good deals on remixers and doing their marketing here. i wanted to manage them, but j3ff from the dr4ke hotel beat me to it. maybe i'll do their pr/marketing here. i dunno. do the dvd. the music without any sort of visualization of crazy girl isn't all that great. actually the EP i only really like balloon factory a lot. but the safety danse cover is fun. actually, the ep grew on me.

whats your label? whens the full length supposed to come out? are you us-based? u got good budget? mail me foo let's make some money.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 March 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd really like to see them live live rather than on a quicktime video on the website. also i have to wait to bring them down after they have some buzz already. i hate to lose money on party.

Think we're gonna be able to swing an enhanced CD (but with vid quality good as Bjork singles). Label is SLUM, site is just a placekeeper (designed by le fabolos Robin Cameron tho) till we get more product) - here. We're Vancouver-based, hence the friendship w Dandi. We're on pretty solid ground. I'll mail you as it happens. -Human Crack In The Flesh

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 24 March 2005 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've actually written "Human Crack In The Flesh" in Sharpie on both my Powerbook AND my cellphone THIS WEEK. I'll take pictures of them with my bought-today digital camera, but only after I write "Human Crack In The Flesh" on the digital camera first.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 24 March 2005 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

do the DVD, i was the videos of her at Misanthropy (that was the show I was at I just realised) and that crazy visual thing...yeah, i really think you should just do since her whole schtick IS really based around around performance.

NORTH, Thursday, 24 March 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

North are u going to the YOUR FACE IS MELTING OFF party tomorrow nite? andrewandrew and my!gay!husband! will be there and I think we should conference about this shit, since they can make the Dandi/Duchess thing happen very soon. Call me tomorrow, but kinda late - I'm having a sleepover right now.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 26 March 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL I'm so excited I can't sleep I'm eating cereal alone and buttnaked in front of my computer. Soccer should be on soon (or is it Sunday?). Fuck it

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 26 March 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil check your mail chinaman

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 26 March 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw her again last night, but her fucking gear fucked up, and that cracked-out kid snatched the mic during intermission to do that HORRIBLE FREESTYLE and I had to confiscate on his ass and he looked like he was going to fight me, which would have been amusing, since I would have cut his fucking eyeball out, messing w my homegirl's show like that.

Anyway, she's with us now, and she's so psyched on the Duchess idea she's going to hook it up/finalize the deal HERSELF the minute she hits Mtl.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Sunday, 27 March 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Aiiight dawg...yeah I said I'd be in the interior for 'a couple of days' and it turned into three weeks, don't need to explain why everything moves so slow out here do I, LOL 4:20 dood! Anyway I found this cool local band, grrl singer/bassist, they kind of sound like a dreampop Sleater-Kinney, they don't have any pictures done unfortunately...talk soon!

dave q (listerine), Sunday, 27 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah man I was waiting for your call that weekend but I assumed you got sucked back into the interior. Are you going to EMP? I can give you a ride and you know you're always welcome to crash at mines, g-thang!
