I realise there was a thread devoted to this some while back, but it seems, looking briefly at the discography on his website, that Julian Cope has released an album a day since his back catalogue was last dicussed on this board. Perhaps deserved of a fresh thread, then? I am really in the mood for Julian at his best this Easter - what should I order?

By the way, I currently own zip records by him at all (apart from The Teardrop Explodes' "Wilder", that is).

Best: Peggy Suicide

I absolutely love the man, but his output since 20 Mothers hasn't really been that top drawer. Brain Donor is a old joke told better by droves of other performers. Citizen Cain'd I just got, but so far, was not worth the multi-year wait. Peggy Suicide, of course, remains his finest hour.

He's still wildly entertaining, though. I was fortunate enough to see him perform here in NYC twice. He doesn't come Stateside too often to play, so when he does, it's a must.

You're always biased towards the first album you get -- in my case, I read a review of Saint Julian in the Washington Post when I was a kid that made me go out and buy it at the U-Maryland student union record store -- and it remains the JC album I come back to most; this _should_ have been one of the records that defined late 80s college rock, but it never caught on. I like Kilimanjaro better than Wilder. And -- pace ilXor consensus -- I barely ever play Peggy Suicide. My other favorites are probably Skellington and the World Shut Your Mouth single. But it's all good. If you don't have anything, why not start with Floored Genius? It's pretty dud-free and will give you a good idea of which manifestation of Cope you like best.

Best song: 'Upwards at 45 Degrees'

The rest is not really for me though.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah get floored genius.

I've loved Peggy Suicide since it came out. Wilder's an oddity but I enjoy it.

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

For the casual fan (like me), I think Peggy Suicide plus the excellent Floor Genius compilation is really all that's required.

Floored Genius, that is

After all this time Wilder's still my fave.

No one's mentioned "Rome wasn't burned in a day" which has a pleasing blend of folky pop and his Braindonor material.

From the sleevenotes I gather he wrote this album after a tour of megalithic Armenia, but I may be mistaken, as the notes are somewhat obliquely written.

Initial copies came with a second cd featuring tracks by Sunburned Hand of Man, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Sunno))), amongst others.

No one is repping Jehovahkill? I LOVE that record. It's definitely the equal of Peggy Suicide.

Floored Genius 1 is a good starting place. If you can find "Fried" and "World Shut Your Mouth", pick those up too.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 27 May 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's definitely the equal of Peggy Suicide.

It's a fine album, but it can't even begin to touch the perfection of Peggy Suicide.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 27 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna go back and listen to Peggy. It's been a LONG time.

I kinda forgot about JC for a few years there, then I started reading his record reviews on his site. The guy sources out some crazy music.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 27 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Jehovahkill more than Peggy Suicide but both are great.

Search: Both the autobiographies. In Repossessed he starts to come out with more of the Norse/Druidic/Shaman mythic style shit that he uses on the Head Heritage site. All very funny. And Lydia Lunch 'fucks his ass off'.

Mestema (davidcorp), Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

"Peggy Suicide is better but I listen to Jehovahkill more."

Which I think proves Guayaquil's point. My first exposure was the "World Shut Your Mouth" single, which was great in that random 80s-alt-singles way. Then I bought My Nation Underground and wrote him off. Ignored PS despite the good reviews but "Fear Loves This Place" drew me back in.

I saw him in NY, too. Great fun.

Also S: "Adam and Eve Hit the Road" from 20 Mothers. Excellent!

'Fried' is my all-time favourite album. By anyone. If you like the Teardrop Explodes, get the excellent 'Zoology' comp from headheritage.com. But you need to be into Kilimanjaro and Wilder first.
