I bought albums by both of these guys within the past week. Mrs Jaxon's first concert was the Jets, but Debarge has the oft sampled "A Dream" and "Stay With Me".

what say you?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember a DeBarge song that was anywhere near as good as "Crush On You" ... so, The Jets.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Try "I Like It" and "Time Will Reveal," then work from there.

Debarge, easy. Possibly the most beautiful music of the '80s.

The Jets were okay, though.

xhuxk, Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Crush on you is pretty crushworthy.

what are some of the more upbeat Debarge tracks. i haven't listened to the full album yet.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one of these bands covered Bill Withers' "Lean On Me"?

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

neither, that was Club Nouveau

DeBarge by several miles. I never liked the Jets and I'm a huge huge Mpls '80s R&B guy.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

for upbeat Debarge stuff, start with "Rhythm of the Night," maybe. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of their first three albums (not counting 1981's *The Debarges,* which I still have never heard).

xhuxk, Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

do we already have a mpls 80s r'n'b thread? if so make one, i gotta go home.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh, Club Nouveau. Now that rings a bell

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Xgau is big on "In a Special Way," isn't he?

I heard El Debarge's "Who's Johnny?" on the radio the other night. I pulled over on the side of the road and chanted the lyrics.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Make It Real" is one of my karaoke standbys that I don't need the monitors for.

THE JETS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DeBARGE

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

arghh (cs appleby), Thursday, 24 March 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

XGAU TO THREAD

(from the two songs by each I've heard I'm giving it to DeBarge - I will buy In A Special Way if I ever see it used, no doubt)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 March 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

El DeBarge made an underrated great MOR soul album in 1986.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 24 March 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Christgau adores In A Special Way. The Jets made crappy dance-pop; DeBarge nailed it on their ballads (though not generally on uptempo tracks). Advantage DeBarge, not even close.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 24 March 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read your panegyrics to Debarge on your site, Thomas. You've half persuaded me to get IASW.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 24 March 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's really a good album (though more an A minus than an A plus)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 24 March 2005 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So what've I gotta do to close the deal, Alfred?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

HANDJOB@!

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I know a DJ here in town who played something the Jets last month or whenever it was. I wish I could remember what it was. He told me they were from Seattle, too.

Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers Theme is the greatest Jets song. Fact.
