Who the fuck does Andrew Bird's voice sound like, exactly?

I started thinking it was Rufus Wainwright, and I still kind of hear it. Then I heard Jay Clifford of Jump (aka Jump, Little Children) fame. And I am still not sure. I feel like I've heard this guy's voice somewhere else... exactly. Maybe not, but I need some help. I'm talking about the newest album, since it's the only one I know.

I thought of that one, but it didn't quite fit. Right direction, though.

The two that I thought of were Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright the first time I listened to him.

yeah i was about to say rufus.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

rufus is way more nasal-y.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Rufus + David Byrne.

"straight Rufus"

Actually I know the answer to this but I can't pull the guy's name or many distinguishing details out of my head. He was a black singer from like maybe 50-70 years ago, played with gender image some I think.

Teeny are you thinking of Screamin' Jay Hawkins? If so, I don't see it. Actually, I doubt that's who you're thinking of. Anyway, I think it might be Beck. In fact, I'm 80% positive. Beck if his music was almost entirely different. Am I crazy or can you guys see this?

David Byrne..... nope.

Dave M, Friday, 25 March 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oh fuck me, I was actually thinking of Antony from Antony and the Johnsons, I confuse those two all the time.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Little bit of Rufus, little bit of Buckley (more on Swimming Hour than the new one), little bit of Thom Yorke (on Eggs), &, during some moments, Paul Simon.

He looks like Montgomery Clift.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Saturday, 26 March 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I dont get the Jeff Buckley comparison, musically or vocally. Certainly full of Rufus-isms. Also, especially on Masterfade i hear Bonnie Prince Billy.

He doesnt look like he sounds though.

I'm hearing a bit of David Mccomb in there too.
dmun OTM with the Masterfade/Will Oldham spot.
I don't see the Antony connection other than his album being called "I am A.Bird now"!!!
