Mira: C/D?

Well, since Mira's finally issuing the Pieces EP, and I figure this would be as good of a time as any to post a thread about them. A few months ago they leaked the first two tracks from the EP (and when I have time I'll post them) and I've heard "No Other Way" live and they're all stunningly gorgeous compositions...but I already knew that from hearing them play those songs live. Their June 2003 performance was the best concert I've seen so far (aside from Mike Watt last November), where they introduced all new material and played nothing from previous releases, and I've been lucky enough to see them three times since they're based here in Tallahassee. Said material was even better than Apart, which still staggers my headspace...the new album (called There I Go, Daydreamer) has a very dodgy title but considering what I've had the opportunity to hear it will be a full-stop classic. Right now they're sadly on hiatus as Tom's in Texas and Mark's back in Illinois. Melody (the bassist) left the group at their most recent concert in February 2004 but now she and Regina are in a dreamy/quirky electro-pop group called Trust Weiness and they're quite lovely. Sorry if this sounds jumbled, my mother's unfortunately put me in a bit of rush and I'm not sure if I'll mention everything I want to...but that Pieces maxi from the description of it is probably going to be the best EP ever released since Scritti Politti's 4 A-Sides. It's so hard for me to be modest about them...

I'd say they're pretty classic. I enjoy their albums a lot when I'm in a certain mood.

There's actually two Miras, but one's only released one record and I think they're European. This is the Floridian one who've released two albums on Projekt while sounding nothing like a typical Projekt band.

why do people always say this about projekt bands they like?

It is the sad undeserved fate of Projekt bands.

why do people always say this about projekt bands they like?
Because the stereotypical conception/dismissal of a Projekt band is one of synthesiser-heavy fogey-Goth shenanigans intended for rivetheads or dark pre-Raphaelite neo-hippies who don't seem to have been entirely weaned from the nipples of Lilith Fair and New Age store counters...and some of the Projekt bands that others enjoy are not of such a mould (or they embody and parody it, like what I've read about Voltaire) and they try to separate them from the perceived theatricality. Unfortunately, I succumbed to the typical defensive notion of distinguishing them from the pack with that lazy description. It would have been better if I said that Mira lacks the theatricality and synth-work evident in other releases on the label and that they don't seem to have been wholeheartedly embraced by the portion of the Projekt fanbase consisting of (to rather humourously paraphrase from a book lest I be attacked for being serious, as that seems to happen a lot) "dead babies who think it'll be 1986 forever" (as I've read complaints that Mira are not dark enough/too POP for the roster -- and even more inexplicably, that Sam Rosenthal's sold out for having them and a few other kindred spirits on Projekt!).

two months pass...
The date for their upcoming album's been pushed back to 16 August. The review of it on the Projekt page for it says the following:

For 2005, Mira returns with their most focused, mature, and fully realized release to date. There I go daydreamer is a testament documenting the band’s attention to detail, ear for texture, and desire to capture the intensity of their live shows. From the unnerving guitars of the album opener “Say When,” Regina immediately sets the tone: “I’ve drawn the line, walked it too many times.” Thus begins the daydreamer journey, which takes the listener through fear, hope, and catharsis, as Regina poses and plays with the questions plaguing her. Never before has she been so open and candid in her lyrics. The album shifts from danceable hits such as the shoegazey and spacey “Highs in the Lows,” and the brief, but brilliant, drive of “Heavenly Slumber” to grand epics like the heavy folk stylings of “Long Division” and the bombastic “Nearest Exit” from which the album is named. In the midst of all of this are the most crystalline and brilliant songs Mira has written, from the jazzy feel of “No Other Way,” to one of the album’s greatest songs, the sparse and ghostly beautiful “Adrift.” “Hinterland,” the album’s closer, is a return to the tension out of which the album began, returning Regina to her questions, searching for a brave face. The lines “inside a cave I will hibernate / when the seasons change I will not even wake” are some of the most painful, as the album builds, explodes, and collapses under its own weight. This latest album from Mira, more than any other, establishes the band at the forefront of the current darkwave/shoegaze/post-punk revival, and cements their place in the annals as one of the best of the bunch, not only on Projekt records, but also across the whole of music today. Absolutely brilliant, an instant classic.

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it'd be fucking brilliant considering what I'd heard in concert!

Revive because There I Go, Daydreamer is coming out Tuesday and another song from it, "Passerby", has leaked out on their site. And ooh is it good... I won't be able to afford to buy it until Friday but I know it's going to be fucking amazing. Best of 2005, definitely.

...is this where I should say I got a copy of the album yesterday?

Shoy! Lucky you and your (presumably) free promos.

Also related, I saw The Rest about two weeks ago (which features Regina on vocals and a mate of my friend Suzee's on drums) and they're just improving in quantum leaps. On the very last song, the guitarist -- Erica, I think? -- impressed me with this squalling feedback outro on the last song that reminded me of KoD's "Hammer" and Breathless' "See How the Land Lies". Any guitarist that can make me think of Gary Mundy and Julian Swales -- is someone I instantly admire, ardently so. *swoon*

I assume you've got the reissue of December coming your way, too, if I'm not mistaken? If you don't have it already?

Had it since 1990. :-)

Yes, I shouldn't've referred to a time before you were born. (Which was 1998 or so, yeah? *hides*)

Did you bring back those Look Blue Go Purple EPs for me when you went there?

NONE FOR YOU.

Damnit to Hell! That was worthless!

First impression: "Reset", "Heavenly Slumber", and "Hinterland" either aren't as great or haven't sunk in just yet, but the other nine tracks are ineffably wonderful. I can't decide if there's a particular highlight of those nine as they're all uniformly excellent.
