That's cool.

Getting it right vs getting it now.

*Heart leaps into mouth*

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 25 March 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the delay sucks but if they put on songs like "I Want A Rainbow Nation", "Superintendent", "Tomorrow", "Last Night I Dreamt Of God" and "One Of Us Must Know" than I will be very happy to have these songs on CD, finally.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 25 March 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Martin's too keen on "Rainbow Nation" though...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 March 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is any of the Brave Captain stuff any good?

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The first stuff he put out was called The Fingertip Saint Sessions Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Released in America as a single CD with a few songs taken off of it and is good. Not great but an interesting direction and made me wonder what he would do next. Mainly surprised that he could sing so well but he is no Sice.

The next album Advertisments For Myself left a lot to be desired. It had only a couple of good song but contained 19 songs and never played it.

Last years All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace is the best thing that he had done to that point. In fact it was Stylus Magazines album of the week, when it came out. http://www.stylusmagazine.com/review.php?ID=2210

Late last year he did kind of a remix album of AWOBMOLG titled alloneworldsmallbee and is limited and sold through his web site only. It’s by far the best thing he has ever done and something I find myself playing over and over again. His lyrics about the Government, machines, religion and life in general is what he needed to do. If he continues along this electronic path than you will be hearing from him again and soon.

I didn't see any Boo stuff on the page, but will this anthology include the first album Ichabod and I? It's really the only thing I've liked by the Boo Radleys, even though the band -- at least at one time -- detested it, and called it middling wanna-be Dinosaur Jr. crap (paraphrasing)... but I like it far more than any Dino Jr.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 26 March 2005 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As Brave Captain he's also put out a few website-only singles that are good ("Mary Mary" and "Luck With Mary Jane" I think). He's really inconsistant, but every release has had at least 2 worthwhile tracks...ideal artist to enjoy via a "greatest hits" mix.

dlp9001, Saturday, 26 March 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

At one time I was supposed to send Martin a copy of my B-side/rarity 4 CDR set! But he never gave me an address to send it to. ;-)

Ned (maura), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
every great track on it pretty much.

how good does this look?

It has "Find the Answer Within" on it.

Therefore, I will buy it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't have "memory babe". but still. you can't have everything.

i wonder if i'd be able to cope to listening to "barney (and me)" 12 years on? talk about music being tied to moments in time ... wow ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, one out of five...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 21 April 2005 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't have Oh, Brother on there do they? :-(

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 21 April 2005 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No "Crow Eye" either - possibly their most moving song. Oh well, I've got the singles.

Ned, is it possible you could send me that anthology somehow on CD/CD-R/MP3CD? I will return the favour although I don't know what you could possibly want from my collection.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 21 April 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, now we've got the 'best of', we should make a 'remnants' selection. "There she goes", "XFM is Ace", etcetera...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 21 April 2005 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I'm ready to campaign for this.

Superintendent (which i've never heard) needs to be on there as well as "I Wanna Be A Touchdown Jesus".

How Beautiful You Are!

Seeing that cover makes me realize the lost art of most covers today. It also makes me sad, in a way, because this is just an anthology and not a new album. It has also reminded me how far British music has fallen with a few expectations being bands like SFA and Radiohead.

Those songs I was referring to Mark, were only songs that have yet to be issued on CD. The song I wanted above any other happens to be called "Put Your Arms Around Me And Tell Me Everything’s Gonna Be OK" not released on the original UK CD version of the, underrated, Kingsize album.

I post on the Bravecaptain board a bit and Martin wrote this a couple of weeks ago regarding song selection: "it's been really hard picking the songs. i would have left most of the singles off but they have to go on so i was left with about twenty songs out of over 150 that i could choose. so some of yr favourites may not be on there but then neither are some of mine."

The only thing I’m disappointed in is only one non-single from the Everything’s Alright Forever album but then what do you take off? The only proper thing would have been to cut the seven B-sides and put album tracks instead. Than add a third CD with B-sides and unreleased stuff. So I can only hope that in the future we get a Boo’s Box Set.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 22 April 2005 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want "Put your arms" on CD, hunt down an australian version of "Kingsize" the album.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 April 2005 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the boos did seem to get caught up in that 2xcd thing that went on around that time (see also lush) where every single needed about 7 b-sides.

i gave up on them when they became stupidly popular (ie when chris evans started playing Wake Up Boo every morning) and never got around to buying the last lp. faith was restored later when they did an acoustic session for radcliffe and ended it with a drunken, acoustic, throwaway version of Catweazel from Icabod and i dug everything out again when i heard about this compilation...

koogs (koogs), Friday, 22 April 2005 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the only track in their back catalogue that's not on CD, aside from "Ichabod" is "I want a rainbow nation".

Oh, and "French Canadian Bean Soup"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and "Sunfly" the free single with "Everything's alright forever"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah what the heck. One brilliant set of discography pages here:
http://www.djouls.com/booradleys/index.html

They haven't listed the Kingsize single, but I have the CD promo, so can tell you:

1) Kingsize (single edit)
2) Superintendent
3) Tomorrow
4) Last Night I dreamed of God
5) Free Huey (Rasmus remix (I think, same one as on the Free Huey 10" anyway))

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What I should of said was songs I don’t own on CD. I own all 26 singles and the vinyl of . I have never been able to find the promo only of the 'Kingsize' single where these songs are located. Have those songs via the made up comp A Boo-Sides Collection.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It should of ended with saying vinyl of Ichabod and C’mon Kids. I also didn’t see your last thread before my post. But yeah that’s it and I’m still searching for that single.

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 22 April 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That Radcliffe session was great, Will Self was on the same show and part way through either Sice or Martin was desperate for the toilet because of the beer they'd been drinking. Will Self: "Just as well you're not the bongo player"

mms (mms), Friday, 22 April 2005 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

French Canadian Bean Soup = teh ace. Such a shame it's practically impossible to find. Had to track down the vinyl after I'd got the CD just to get it.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been watching this pretty closely and Martin Carr said that the second disc was over by 12 minutes in the middle of April: "this comp is becoming a nightmare. i still have to knock 12(!) minutes off side 2. its in danger of just being a singles comp which was not the idea at all."

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-04/22.shtml#boo

Pitchforkmedia meanwhile wrote about it: Though they played a major role in defining British indie in the 90s (before fellow countrymen Blur and Oasis launched it into the mainstream), chances are if you called the U.S. home, you were pretty much oblivious to the Boo Radleys, who unfortunately lacked the cheeky shenanigans to propel them onto the cover of the British tabloids. Well, your chance for a second date is on its way. According to Sanctuary Records, the influential (but sadly disbanded) group are prepping a career-spanning 2xCD anthology for release on July 4 through Castle Music, a Sanctuary offshoot.

Entitled Find the Way Out, the comp marks the group's first comprehensive hits collection, and includes tracks culled from each of the three labels they recorded for during their lifespan-- Action, Rough Trade, and Creation Records. The 40 remastered songs included on the set offer a healthy number of selections from each of the band's six studio albums (most notably the classic Giant Steps), as well as singles, b-sides, and previously unreleased material. The album also features deluxe packaging with artwork by original collaborator Stephen Wood.

So some things have been moved around with different songs from Ichabod And I and they alos added the superior demo version of "Hip Clown Rag". But some songs have been dropped including my theme song "Put Your Arms Around Me and Tell Me Everything’s Going To Be OK." I added up side two and it come up to approx 73:20, so I hope that some songs will find their way back on this thing. So as of now five songs have been cut and I'm a bit upset with that.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 1 May 2005 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it was more the fact that they were one of the ugliest bands ever that kept them out of the tabloids, not the lack of cheeky shenanigans. the selections from 'giant steps' are odd, i am surprised they didn't put on 'white noise revisited' or 'upon 9th and fairchild' though i suppose that might have been redundant with 'lazarus'.
