"My Generation"

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, maybe I didn't make things clear enough at the beginning. None of these rock songs are going to cut it for "sheer joy on wax". Kenny Loggins? The Archies? And more of The Who? (maybe I'd pause for a moment if you suggested 'Goin' Mobile')

What we're talking about here is a beat plus a groove plus a hook that's gonna force you to smile and shake your shit a little bit in the face of all adversity, like Genius of Love has the power to do.

Flashlight, Whitehorse, and Wordyrappinghood were more on course. What about 1999?

Octavio Coleman (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"21st Century Schizoid Man"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Supper's Ready"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Aaron, who are the artists pleez?

Octavio Coleman (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

if you have to ask...
Yes
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Genesis

All of these force me to smile and shake my shit a little bit in the face of all adversity.
P.S. trying to limit the parameters of your own thread never works ;)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Matador," Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
"Si Senor," Control Machete
"El Gordo Motoneta," Bersuit Vergabarat
"El Album," Aterciopelados

"El Porro Magangueleno," Celso Pina
"Algo Tienes," Paulina Rubio

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

KISS

jake b. (cerybut), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Atomic Dog

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

but otherwise, i agree with the premise of the thread

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a better premise than Why Bon Scott was totally gay, and that's pretty ironic.
But I doubt this one will end up as funny.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah naming its equal is the best you can do here

()ops (()()ps), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what Octavio is getting at... there are very few that beat "Genius Of Love" on such a universal basis for dance-floor funk/R&B/dance night purposes.. but I think, given the mood, that "And The Beat Goes On" by the Whispers, "I'm Ready" by Kano, "Double Dutch Bus" by Franki Smith, "Soul Finger" by the Bar Kays, Diana Ross's "Upside Down", or the Pointer Sisters' "How Long (Betcha Gotta Chick On The Side)" could beat it, or come close.

For pure bliss, Minnie Riperton's "Les Fleur", but this is just a great introductory song with a full Charles Stepney orchestration, and probably belongs in a different context.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Double Dutch Bus" by Franki Smith

Thank you!

Octavio Coleman (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love Ritual" by Al Green.

"Strike Up the Band" by Chic, this is a tune I've been obsessed with over the last week or so, perfection.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Everyday People."

I could go on, but the limit was one.

Also, donut debonair, OTM. Hell yeah.

ffirehorse, Friday, 25 March 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Doin' the Doo," Betty Boo
"Remember," Blueboy
"Eye Know," De La Soul
"Remind Me," Royksopp
"Pussy," Brazilian Girls
"A Tune for Jack," Lemon Jelly

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah fuck "genius of love". sick of it.

"(Everytime I Turn Around) Back in Love Again" by L.T.D. blows "Genius of Love" out of the water for "sheer joy on wax."

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no, sorry. next?

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Give It Up" - The Goodmen

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 25 March 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have missed a long song title, but Chic have been criminally ignored here.

"Dance, Dance, Dance", "Le Freak", hell, all of their hits and then some.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(a lone song title, that is)

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, sorry edd s.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 25 March 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I count more than one so far!

One more won't hurt: "Pleasure Of Love"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"She Sells Sanctuary"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 March 2005 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Kids Are Alright"

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Double Dutch Bus, Jesus I haven't heard that in 7 trillion years. Hahahahah forgot that even existed.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

oh... it's HOTT!

Octavio Coleman (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 26 March 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Double Dutch Bus, Jesus I haven't heard that in 7 trillion years. Hahahahah forgot that even existed.

how could you forget with missy "borrowing" directly from it?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Saturday, 26 March 2005 08:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I can name two Tom Tom Club songs that are better than "Genius of Love":
"James Brown" and "Suboceana"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 26 March 2005 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I don't pay any attention to Missy.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Saturday, 26 March 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Missy also "borrowed" from the Pointer Sisters' "How Long" as well.. or at least the "Betcha Gotta Chick On The Side/Sho You Gotta Chick/I KNOW You Gotta Chick On The Siiiiiide" part.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 26 March 2005 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't say better, because I love Genius Of Love, but i'll say "sharing equal amounts of sheer joy on wax": Mr Big Stuff

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 27 March 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Disco Stomp" - Hamilton Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 27 March 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

While certainly more swarthy, Laid Back "White Horse"

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 27 March 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)
