Vanessa Carlton: C/D?

Catchy hit song, definately the right artist with the right song at the right time. Talent? Sure. Sex Appeal? Hmmm.. Clumsy imaging combined with two okay records. This one is probably a no-brainer. She won't be the next Laura Nyro. D

ZionTrain, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Less Dud than Michelle Branch, if that counts for anything.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It sure as hell counts for something, Mr. WKRP, because you're fifteen types of WTF? w/ that statement. BRANCH 4 LIFE!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you a Branch Davidian?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I suppose "1,000 Miles" is a genuinely great single. Although my fondness for it stems mainly from a particularly goofy moment in the history of the local high school radio station, when the two kids DJing decided it would be cool to sing along, in falsetto, with the piano riff each time it appeared. And they were right: it was cool!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"If I could fall
Into the sky,
Do you think time
Would pass me by?"

I mean, if your lyrics are going to be that stupid, you should at least have the decency to mumble them. Dud and a half.

Heidy- Ho, Friday, 25 March 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw her play this song called something like "White Houses" (??) on MTV's TRL one time. It was just her and a piano. It was somewhat classic. The original version of the song was a complete dud though.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 26 March 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "1000 Miles" and her "Paint It Black" cover. Beyond that, no, not so classic.

babyalive (babyalive), Saturday, 26 March 2005 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Never liked the singles from the first album but "White Houses" is a straight-up classic. Haven't heard any other singles from the new album, though. Have they pushed more?

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The sound of "White Houses" is similar enough to her earlier treacle that I didn't grok it at first but once I got into the lyrics I was like, wow this is some A+ treacle. Like sell-out Kimya or something (and she sings on the last Kimya album!).

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

and the video for "White Houses" is pretty classic too. Stephan Jenkins is a lucky, lucky man.

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

she deserves to have her mouth sewn shut and her arms cut off for that time-warner cable commercial.

f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (adamwest), Saturday, 26 March 2005 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see that Time Warner piece. I'm assuming it made her look stupid.

ZionTrain, Saturday, 26 March 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

she's dating Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins. *barf*

1000 miles was just plain horrendous due to *pseudo-erotic piano tinkering* in videoclip.

yes, i base myself on who she dates and how she presents herself on mtv.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Saturday, 26 March 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

they remove the psuedo in the "White Houses" video. See it!

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 26 March 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud, she is atrocious and her fans (and management) are intolerable.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Saturday, 26 March 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

She's got a new album coming out on Murder INC.

Yes, that Murder INC.

WTF?

The Brainwasher, Monday, 13 August 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Ashanti to sing the hooks!

Cunga, Monday, 13 August 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Even better if Ja Rule does guest raps.

Tim F, Monday, 13 August 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Kids, the first single off her new album is actually very good. I thought the Inc. signing was a puzzling experiment, but it doesn't seem to have affected her at all, stylistically at least.

Baron Von Jigglesworth, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

I thought her last album was pretty ok. Pharrel Williams does backing vocals for one of the songs.

I heard one of her new songs ("Dear California") over the in-store play in Barnes & Noble just now and my first impression is that it reminded me in a pleasant way of 2nd or 3rd album Liz Phair.

as tim f and i have been discovering, her last two records (rabbits on the run and liberman) are really amazing too

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 13 March 2020 13:33 (six years ago)

also i have a stream of the new one and think it's kind of a masterpiece

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 13 March 2020 13:33 (six years ago)

I remember loving Dear California when it came out but never followed through on checking out the rest of that album.
Thanks for the reminder Brad!

All three albums are a+++

Tim F, Saturday, 14 March 2020 00:51 (six years ago)

^^^ this and the rest of the album are still blowing my mind. can't wait for friday :)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 23 March 2020 17:51 (six years ago)

New album is out today (it's Friday already in Oz) and I can listen to it properly and if I just focus on that one thing I am so happy.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:41 (six years ago)

my favorite part of "i know you don't really mean it" is the humming at the end

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 26 March 2020 22:59 (six years ago)

Miner’s Canary was an odd advance single but an awesome closer

Tim F, Thursday, 26 March 2020 23:28 (six years ago)

*piano gets sucked into wormhole*

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 27 March 2020 02:05 (six years ago)

i also really love the blown out full band outro of "future pain." that song really gets to me for some reason. "turn down the lights / drink enough until we see each other right / this place won't bite but it won't save you either / we're going down tonight" - good lyric, great delivery

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 27 March 2020 14:26 (six years ago)

fridmann did a great job

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 27 March 2020 14:27 (six years ago)

not sure how "the only way to love"'s lyric/sound/arrangement has the exact same shape of my experience of love, but it does

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 27 March 2020 14:30 (six years ago)

omg, i'm loving this.
i confess this is the first album i hear of her.

Nourry, Friday, 27 March 2020 21:02 (six years ago)

this album is giving me life.

"White Houses" is not just Vanessa's best song (per a recent Brad post elsewhere) but one of the best songs by anyone. That odd mixture of idiosyncracy, economy and generosity that typifies many of Taylor's best recent songs. It really feels like it tells a fully fleshed out story in less than 4 minutes, the narrator growing and learning before your ears.

what about the new record?

Nourry, Wednesday, 29 April 2026 15:33 (one month ago)

i keep forgetting to listen to it even though it will inevitably restore everything that has died within me

ivy., Wednesday, 29 April 2026 15:51 (one month ago)

Still early days but, while the arrangements are divertingly dense and intricate, the songwriting is unusually thin, and Vanessa sounds like she recorded her vocal tracks one room over
