Avoiding House & Disco while searching for new & old records

You know when you read a review and go out and get a new electronic album or collection, thinking you're gonna get fila brazillia or board of canada - you end up with Rinocerose or the Paris Lounge collection - where every song has that housey "unt-sss" of the kik/hihat going thoughout the whole thing? Or, say, your looking through the old funk and r&b bin, thinking you'll find some classic Macio/JB's type of shit and you end up with Idris Muhammed's 'boogie to the top'. It's the same problem in the disco era, w/ 4/4 hihats seeping through on everything. late 70s & early 80s Jazz records: also guilty (see: Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock). So, what are the tell-tale signs to watch out for. (beyond '1978' and 'a mirrored ball on the cover'). Thanks!

honestly/earnestly, it might be worthwhile to cultivate an appreciation for house and disco.

you calling all us disco lovers gay? (hi jed)

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

alright, real answer, if you're looking through old funk and soul records and you want to not get disco, stick with 69-75 and you'll be mostly ok.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're looking at '70s records by popular jazz musicians, obviously you want to avoid the albums with vocals. Just look for the long list of background singers on the back. As for new electronic music, just don't buy it at all. Seriously though, how could you go looking for BOC and wind up with a house compilation? Aren't things like the cover art, the label and titles pretty much a dead giveaway?

Better to crawl in a hole and wait for it all to be over than to risk acccidentally buying a disco record.

Bobby, earnest answer.. most vinyl stores have these things called listening stations or preview turntables. Use them. You might be surprised how helpful they are.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 26 March 2005 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If they don't, then buy one of those miniature dealies, crouch in the corner, and preview them yourself! Worse comes to worse, you'll get kicked out a store that's lame-ass enough to not have a vinyl preview turntable anyway, so no big loss!

(Yes, I'm even talkin' about Amoeba)

I would love to get that boxset. Has anyone seen it on Ebay recently?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 26 March 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind, I see it.
