Well, yes, but "the drugs don't work, they just make you worse" doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement to me.

Isn't it great how many of these artists were being totally two-faced? The Stones! Motley Crue!!!? I remember thinking the anti-drugs lyrics on Straight Outta Compton were, erm, less than sincere when I first heard them.

Almost anything by Spacemen 3 or Spiritualized, when they aren't being militantly pro-drug. Just like real addicts!

Ryan Pitchfork, Monday, 28 March 2005 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

does white lines count? it walks a line (sorry) between disapproval and underhanded endorsement

same with eminem's 'kids' which is more hilarious

4hero - mr. kirk's nightmare

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 28 March 2005 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Horse" is an anti-herion, but pro-cocaine song.
"Don'r ride the white horse/ride the white pony"

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Where exactly in "White Lines" is there any backhanded endorsement of the drug?

musically (musically), Thursday, 20 April 2006 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I seem to recall, and I believe I read this in the book "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life," that Grandmaster Flash and crew were totally coked up throughout the "White Lines" sessions. Assuming this is accurate, I pose no argument on whether it is actually a "backhanded endorsement," boldfaced hypocrisy, or some sort of ironic fluke. I rather like the song, and tthe man, whatever the case may be. And how about that Duran Duran cover? No coke for them, obviously.

Sexy MFA (Hexy M.F.), Thursday, 20 April 2006 05:16 (twenty years ago)

S.O.A. - Lost in Space

Teen Idles - Deadhead

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Thursday, 20 April 2006 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Anybody who thinks "Because I Got High" is an anti-drug song is ignoring a century or more of American music tradition. Also "Repeater" is an anti-guns song -- the good Fugazi anti-drug song from that album is "Shut the Door", and "Glue Man" is better than that.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 20 April 2006 07:51 (twenty years ago)

The McGruff anti-drug song, of course!
The one that goes "users are losers, and losers are users, so don't use drugs, don't use drugs!"

PS My Uncle St3v3 P4rk3r, who actually helped invent the McGruff persona, was recently named the "official" national voice of McGruff the crimedog!

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Thursday, 20 April 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

"White Lines" endorses cocaine in the line "don't don't do it"...(the two "don't's" cancelling each other out)...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Modern Lovers - I'm Straight

I saw you though today walk by with hippie Johnny.
I had to call up and say how I want to take his place.
So this phone call today conerns hippie Johnny.
He's always stoned, he's never straight.
I saw you today, you know, walk by with hippie Johnny.
Look, I had to call up and say, I want to take his place.
See he's stoned, hippie Johnny.
Now get this, I'm straight and I want to take his place.
Now look, I like him too, I like hippie Johnny.
But I'm straight
and I want to take his place.
