Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Saturday, 26 March 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Byrds' "Eight Miles High" is quite similar.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Saturday, 26 March 2005 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Roxy Music's "Eight Miles High" is neat too.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Saturday, 26 March 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's heard the versions by
Eugene Chadbourne,
Golden Earring,
Leo Kottke
or
Magic Mushroom Band,
then?

(I presume Crowded House's is crapshitular (no??))

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 26 March 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Chadbourne/Shockabilly version is awesome. Off "Colosseum" IIRC

Shockabilly. Hadn't thought of them for years.

What a band! What absolutely insane records! When can they play Instal or Le Weekend?

Soukesian, Saturday, 26 March 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hang Ups have a great version.

But to answer the question: nothing

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 27 March 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep wanting to say "Helter Skelter" by Husker Du, but I'm guessing that would have come up already if it was a correct answer.

dlp9001, Sunday, 27 March 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The last Oneida album sort of has that feeling of classic-y psych rock tunes pummeled with distortion. The Magic Hour were a little more sluggish and dirgey with a somewhat more precise approach to the guitar solos but maybe they might fit?

I wonder whether no one's really given a serious answer because this cover might seem like such an obvious alternative rock template. Nirvana or Pavement might be as good answers as what I gave.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 27 March 2005 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Superchunk had a bit of the rushing feel, I guess.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 27 March 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(I presume Crowded House's is crapshitular (no??))

It has Roger McGuinn on it! It sounds like the original, but more sluggish.

'haitch' (haitch), Sunday, 27 March 2005 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Index "eight miles high"

dderringer, Sunday, 27 March 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Husker actually did cover "Helter Skelter" live.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 28 March 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They released it on a single.

dlp9001, Monday, 28 March 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was funny that Bob didn't bother to learn the lyrics and just starts mumbling and screaming. How about these "serious answers" off the top of my head...

Love - Seven and Seven is
Pere Ubu - Final Solution
Sonic Youth - White Cross
The Damned - Neat Neat Neat
Or maybe Fugazi or Nation of Ulysses?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 28 March 2005 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dinosaur Jr. - Kracked

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 28 March 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Serious answer--

Leatherface's "Heart Is Home", off their most recent (and not all that good--this is the best track) album. It sounds like Husker's "Eight Miles High" cover mixed with their own "New Day Rising". Very good.

John 2, Monday, 28 March 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought that Bob's wordless screams were a kind of rebellious act, like Siouxsie dropping the F-bomb in the Banshees' cover of "Helter Skelter". He sang the first verse or two... I guess we could drop by his blog and ask him what his intention was!

To answer the question, how about "Rave Down" by Swervedriver?

Mission of Burma - Academy Fight Song

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Husker Du's version and in my high school band I learned all the parts - even the drums!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

in my high school band
My first thought was of a marching band ... (Pete Wrigley leading the band in "Love Rollercoaster" to thread..)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy Husker Du's Metal Circus and Zen Arcade. They book-ended the release of Eight miles high, so you get that glorious fuzz-period Husker Du.

there was a cool version of 8 miles high that someone did in the late-80's, but i can't remember their name. i have seen the album it was on too. they would show the video for this version on 120 minutes and i remember being impressed by how well the video captured how i felt on acid.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a cool live version of this on video from a gig in 85-ish. They wrapped up the show with 'Reoccuring Dreams' before segueing into 'Eight Miles High'. Talk about a real cathartic end to a show.

But I'm stuck for another song that really compares well. There are plenty of things I can name that rip off different aspects of that sound, but nothing quite nails both Bob Mould's howling and the noise that Flying-V makes.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

On the other hand you *could* try:

MBV - You Made Me Realise
Polvo - Can I Ride
Dinosaur - Little Fury Things
Moving Targets - Less Than Gravity

Was that on the Time Between - Tribute to the Byrds album?? If so, I've just looked it up, it was The Moffs. OH and, jeez, I'd forgotten about that Dinosaur version of Feel a whole lot better on there too. I'll be digging that out later!

bg, Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The Byrds' "Dolphins Smile" to thread!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Time Between
Oh yeah. Must dig that out...

Also the Byrds' Never Before has an alternate version of 8 Miles High that I sometimes perfer - that guitar bit at the front is a bit messier on the alt. version.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

weren't the byrds just ripping off a coltrane song or something?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it nicks a motif from 'India', which is on the album Impressions. I like the way McGuinn wove that stuff into his own work.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

That Dinosaur version of 'Feel A Whole Lot Better' would be great if it didn't have that damn Muppet voice singing on it. Who is it anyway, Big Bird?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, I'd forgotten about that irritating repeated vocal thing. Maybe it could be put through some sort of muppet-filter in Pro-Tools?

bg, Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Im still thinking about this question! Basically you want another song that sounds exactly like a post-hardcore power trio covering a psychedelic folk-rock band that rips off a free-jazz saxophonist whos experimenting with Indian scales. Ill get back to you...

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Abba - Dancing Queen

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, even more than My Bloody Valentine's "You Made Me Realise" is the previous Ecstasy & Wine disc - especially "Clair" which sounds a lot like "Eight Miles High".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, Redd Kross' "Dancing Queen" might actually come close.
