Or is it Freak Nasty?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 26 March 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S FREAK NASTY

chilling with the Quad City DJs and the 69 Boyz in the 90s hip-house pop-rap afterlife.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 26 March 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Freak Nasty is struggling and basically begging for work around New Orleans last I heard. My boy Ghetto Red used to be part of the Hard Hood clique, which is FN's lame post-Dip attempt at hood cred, but bailed for greener pastures. Let's put it this way: Freak Nasty's right hand man works on air conditioning at the NO aquarium.

Ouch. That's not what I wanted to hear.
That video is amazing. Anybody seen or have access to it?

the version by mc luscious is better. but mostly cuz it is done by someone clearly inspired by l'trimm.

This thread is remarkable. The song is great.

Yes. I wish I had a better version of this, my mp3 of it has no bass, which kinda makes the whole song moot.

It'so sad when someone puts out a crap song like 'the dip' that just rubs you the right way, and then wonders what they did wrong to fail to acheive long-term star status. they should be wondering what they possibly did right, since songs like this are a total fluke.

I used to work with the guy who wrote and produced "short dick man". I felt like he was eternally chasing that special sauce that brought him such temporary fame and he never seened to understand that there was nothing inherently good or valuable about his smash hit, that it was just one of those flukes and he ought not to drive himself crazy trying to recapture that success.

"da dip" is not a crap song.

Who produced Gilette? How do you know them?

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's not a crap song, nor is it the kind of song that inspires expectations of a long and fruitful career.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

gilette was inherently good and valuable. Duh!

Who produced Gilette?

Wasn't it 20 Fingers? Or was that someone else?

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

the version by mc luscious is better. but mostly cuz it is done by someone clearly inspired by l'trimm.

Luscious wasn't inspired by L'trimm. Although I have love for L'trimm, they kinda weren't accepted in the community at the time. Luscious was just a face...her cousin, Steve Tempo, was the driving force behind Luscious's releases...and they often recruited Danny D, DJ Wiz, and Jealous J (now Jim Jonsin) for her material, and none of those producers/writers gave a rats ass about L'trimm.

Who produced Gilette?

That post-strictly rhythm brand of hip-house is not my area of expertise, but wasn't Gilette just the front girl for 20 Fingers? I mean, even her solo stuff...wasn't that produced by 20 Fingers? (ah hell, x-post)

It'so sad when someone puts out a crap song like 'the dip' that just rubs you the right way, and then wonders what they did wrong to fail to acheive long-term star status. they should be wondering what they possibly did right, since songs like this are a total fluke.

This song wasn't a fluke, it was part of "3rd Wave Bass" going national. When Bass became the sound of Miami circa 85/86, everyone jumped on board hoping to have a major national hit (especially since Atlantic Records was begining to sign acts around 88/89), but come 1991, most Miami thought Bass might not break through...so most Miami acts abandoned it after "Shake Wahtcha Mama Gave Ya". it was acts from outside South Florida that kept with it (95 South, 69 Boyz, quad City DJ's, Duice, Tag Team, 12 Guage, Sir Mix-a-lot, etc) that found national hits while South Florida tried their hand at everything else under the sun. For the 3rd wave acts from outside South Florida, it was timing and building upon the foundation.

innit freq nasty?

Freq Nasty was a Florida Breaks styled group that was a play on Freak Nasty.

"and none of those producers/writers gave a rats ass about L'trimm."

UNLESS YOU HAVE DOCUMENTED TESTIMONY THAT LUSCIOUS WAS NOT A L'TRIMM FAN IN HER YOUTH, I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU.

i have no idea what her influences or inspirations are or were. my point -really- was that her version is just more fun and more fun to listen to. i was making da funny.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

But really, you are right, i must have been crazy to compare the two:

I'd never seen the video for "Da Dip" before - great stuff!

Some random thoughts:

1) That bassline sounds really familiar - is it a sample or a remake?
2) Surprisingly little flesh on display for a quote-unquote booty video - was there an alternate, nasty version?
3) The Kurt Cobain wannabe is funny - wouldn't this have been only two years after his suicide? I think it's awesome that his image had already become a visual shorthand for "white rock'n'roll dude" by then.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wow, the video. Great revive!
To be fair, I caught "Nasty Freak" seconds afterward. But I live with the shame.
I also love Jimmy Mod's Html love.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Danngg this was the summer song of 1997 (I think?). Not that I liked it much, I just remember it was constant rotation everywhere--radio, MTV, The Box.

And hearing it again today, that bassline sounds nice. But coming out of stereo speakers via tv and radio in the '90s, it just didn't click with me.
Actually, recently I've been rediscovering a lot of radio hits that i didn't like back then or pay much attention to but now enjoy because they sound great at a...high bit rate, i guess is the case.

Yeah, that's a good song though, definitely a classic.
