Rock band's best attempt at dub?

Well, these examples are loosely rock bands and maybe their efforts are loosely dub, but I nominate:

Simple Minds - "This Fear of Gods" (listening to it also inspired this thread, aside from the obvious)
Kitchens of Distinction - "Anvil Dub"
Slowdive - "Souvlaki Space Station"
Killing Joke - "Turn to Red"

Dif Juz's "Mi" in my opinion is their most successful dubwise piece...and in regard to PiL, maybe "Home Is Where The Heart Is" since it's the closest of all their songs to the heart of dub since it didn't have a disco beat and Keith didn't play guitar throughout the entirety of it like "Poptones".

I've always thought that Bela Lugosi's Dead was a dub song- that huge, simple, heavy bassline, the sidestick patterns, the guitar scritches, the predominance of effects, the sense that it could be five minutes long or twenty minutes long . . .

The Slits to thread
The Pop Group to thread (both Dennis Bovell produced, so )
Bad Brains "Rally Round Jah Throne"

Dub?

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Sunday, 27 March 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is definitely dub, and many of Bauhaus' songs have dub bass lines.

I've always considered The Slits to be more of a dub group than punk and so it's not like they were attempting to be dubby and so their inclusion's redundant. The Pop Group were very dubwise but it's always blended with other styles and so they weren't making a conscious attempt at being dubwise. I love them both very much, though!

I'm with Geir. Although I can't remember which songs would be classified as dub. "Bankrobber"? "The Guns of Brixton"?

Ted Leo has some dub thing on his site ( I think it's called congressional dubcession) that's pretty decent.

Japan did a bit of nice dub at the start of their career - stuff like "Rhodesia" from Obscure Alternatives.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 March 2005 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they're not rock - but:

Soft Cell's 'Tainted Dub' deserves a mention.

And Pete Shelley's 'Telephone Operator'.

One big disappointment was the Flying Lizards album, 'The Secret Dub Life of the Flying Lizards'. It's really quite tame - a big let down considering how successfully they combined dub and ambient styles for their second album 'Fourth Wall'.

Not a band effort per se, but from the unlikely origin of Legenday Pink Dots, Ryan Moore has done brilliant things with Twilight Circus Dub Sound System.
