I'm not sure whether i prefer this or Eno's, but both are definately classic for me.

i like both as well. i have absolutely nothing to say about either of them unfortunately.

Jeez, wow, when did this come out and what does it sound like?

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 28 March 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else catch this live a few years back? I saw as many people asleep as riveted, which I guess was the point, right?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw them do this live at the Winter Garden in the World Financial Center back in Nov. 1998. They also played Terry Riley's "In C". Good show.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a classic. Buy it now.

drewo (drewo), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What did they do with it? Was there a score for the Eno original? (Thought he just asked Wyatt to improvise and remixed it, more or less but I don't know in depth.) Did they still use piano and voices?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

no score for the Eno original

they precisely notated the original record's chance combinations of tape loops, and reperformed 'live' with real voices & instruments instead of eno's tailored sounds

if your idea of the final track was 'nice, but could use slightly more reverb and maybe a lovely sax solo over the top towards the end' then By All Means, Head On Downtown

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

>no score for the Eno original

(actually the back cover of the album I think is offered as a casual after-the-fact graphic score)

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's a bit redundant and a slightly weird thing to do : the whole record is based on random mangling of the various, carefully designed sources. so, if eno had chosen other sections of the never ending loop, would i / they interact to it in the same way? in any case, it's quite a lovely piece so they have hardly hurt it in any way.

in a similar vein - i've recently acquired a bootleg of a 1999 concert from amsterdam with an orchestra performing 'the shutov assembly' and a couple of other things. this one is so good it made me go back and listen to the original again.

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"mangling" = "mingling"

phil turnbull (philT), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds interesting, do they do 'ikebukuro'?

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

When I saw them play it, they encored with "Golden Hours."

It seems I will be seeing BOAC this weekend, feat. Lee Ranaldo. I don't think I've heard a note of BOAC in my life, and have no idea what to expect.

Buyer Beware!,

This review is from: Music for Airports: Live (MP3 Download)

This CD sounds okay but it is not Brian Eno...kind of like one of those old albums from K-Tel: covers of famous songs.

haha.

tylerw, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:22 (fifteen years ago)

tho i guess i can see someone being confused from the cover art. i get upset sometimes when i find out that bach isn't playing on all these damn records with his name on them.

tylerw, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:23 (fifteen years ago)

They were great in the foyer of the Barbican at the weekend.

Heading along tonight to see BoaC at the Muziekgebouw - performing Music for Airports alongside Reich's 2x5 & works by, uh, one of Dirty Projectors and an English composer called Steve Martland. Anyone seen/heard them recently?

If this had come out while I was at music school, my head probably would've exploded. That said, the last track has always been my favorite -- and I've never really wanted it to have sax, lovely or otherwise. The half-speed ARP is lovely enough.

i saw BoaC perform that Steve Reich piece 2x5 just last weekend; it was fantastic.

I saw BOAC perform Music for Airports at Big Ears #2 in 2010 -- one of the highlights of the festival for me.

Carlos Pollomar (WmC), Saturday, 17 March 2012 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

They only performed 1/1 from MfA - glad to have caught it. The Reich was a really good choice; bit closer to Branca than any other Reich I've seen performed.

The Steve Martland piece, "Horses of Instruction", was the highlight for me, though - will have to track down some recordings.

Anybody else heard Psychic Temple Plays Music for Airports? It's Psychic Temple + Mike Watt, and they do 2 takes of "1/1," sort of treating it like "Dark Star." It's really good. There's also an original called "Music for Bus Stops."

I'm visiting NYC in early May and I noticed the dates perfectly coincide with this event, which includes Bang on a Can doing Music for Airports, David Lang, Matmos, Glenn Branca Ensemble and about a million other things. I caved and bought a full pass more or less immediately.
