i have really high expectations for this album now

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 28 March 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, me!

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

after the "Dirty Harry" white label fiasco

I am not understanding what he means by this.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither. "Dirty Harry" wasn't fantastic or anything, but it was surprisingly good, and it made a fine teaser for the album- which is what it was supposed to do, since "Feel Good Inc" is the single, not "Harry."

The video is up now, by the way:

http://fans.gorillaz.com/news.php

The animation is incredible, and the Hayao Miyazaki nod is nice. Kind of glad they left De La Soul alone (the animated "ghost" Deltron from the first album's videos was a fucking horrible character design). There's another animated short up as well:

And don't read the comments on the "fan" site unless you want your head to explode.

Telephonething, Monday, 28 March 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

On first and second listen, this one sounds really promising.

John Fredland (jfredland), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I already listened to the whole album, 15 tracks, at least 10 of them are great, the ones with Roots Manuva and MF Doom on it are killer tracks, i also loved the one with Shaun Ryder on vocals, the album goes within a wide variety of styles, i like the fact that there are variations of hip hop, some tracks are brit hop and some other very american sounding, never thought that Danger Mouse could be able to do such a fine work on the beats of this album, although i'm gonna miss Dan "The Automator" and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien I think that in some ways Damon's crazyness is begining to take shape. The last three tracks of the album go slower than the rest of the album. The first one is just an intro, the second one is about souls and is very good as well... Some guy from the label told me at first that it was gonna be one of my top 10 albums of the year and obviously i never believed him... after listening to it i have to say that it can easily go into the top 15.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"after the "Dirty Harry" white label fiasco
I am not understanding what he means by this."

I don't think is referring to the quality of "Dirty Harry" - I think it's that the label first wanted to leak a 12" of the song, then changed their minds, but a couple copies had gone out already without the necessary accompanying hype-paperwork, and the label tried to recall them, causing rumors that the label was unhappy with the choice of single or something.

Waking Up Onstage at Jumbo's (Bent Over at the Arclight), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

That video looks GREAT! But...er...I don't recognize any Miyazaki nod.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be reaching a little, but Noodle's floating island is more than a little reminescent of the titular island in Laputa, and Miyazaki loves him some windmills...

Telephonething, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
This reminds me of..

Brother Pele's in the back
Sweet Seena's in the front
Cruising down the freeway
In the hot, hot sun

Suddenly red blue lights
Flash us from behind
Loud voice
"all will please step out onto the line"

Pele breathes words of comfort
Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades
Is that a Chevy 69?

How bizarre
How bizarre
How bizarre

OMC.. New Zealand..

Ludo (Ludo), Monday, 2 May 2005 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also U2's "Staring at the Sun"

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 2 May 2005 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
So that is De La Soul. Thought I recognized them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

only Dave, isn't it?

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

The guy that used to be called Trugoy the Dove, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

An oddly anonymous rap but it's so great for De La to score their first hit since 1989.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 29 July 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

In Britain they had five further hits between 1991 and 2000.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 July 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

plus Posdnuos providing the vocals on Mint Royale's 'Show Me' in 2001 if that counts.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 29 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

An oddly anonymous rap

I don't think so. The song is about (illegal) migration and De La's rap is from the perspective of the powers that be, laughing in the refugees' faces.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I think he meant anonymous, like, um, stylistically transparent or something.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I meant that the rap sounds nothing like De La Soul (and, no, after several hundred listens, I had no idea the song was about illegal immigration).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's a total revelation to me as well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I meant that the rap sounds nothing like De La Soul

Agreed. It's a damn long way from "Potholes in my lawn".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

> An oddly anonymous rap but it's so great for De La to score their first hit since 1989.

Annoyingly, though, most sources (including Billboard and the latest NOW comp) are now only crediting Gorillaz, no De La. :(

(But on the upshot, the song's rebounded to #16 on the U.S. Hot 100 singles chart!)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda worried about what sort of state of mind I will be in in the possible future in which this song doesn't sound a thousand kinds of awesome anymore.

And somehow, it's not even NEARLY my favorite song on the album (today, that honor goes to "Dare").

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

A lot of the rap on 'Feel Good Inc' was done by Del I thought, with only little bits and lots of laughing from De La.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

after having this album now for a while, i can STILL say- i like it.
i rilly do.
while it's not as fun as the 1st, it's got it's own set of charms...

eedd, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaa!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Are De La on any other album tracks? They're still at the top of their considerable game, as last year's The Grind Date proved.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

"ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaaa!"

whatchu laughin @ curtis??
best not be my opinion!
i gets all sorts of angrah!!1!1

eedd, Friday, 29 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

De La is on "Feel Good Inc."
Bootie Brown from Pharcyde is on "Dirty Harry"
MF Doom is on "November Has Come"
Roots Manuva is on "All Alone"
Shaun Ryder is on "Dare"
Dennis Hopper is on "Fire Coming Out Of A Monkey's Head"
Del tha Funky Homosapien does not appear anywhere on this album

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Curtis was typing the laugh from the song dude.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

oh.
well...
carry on.

eedd, Friday, 29 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Nickalicious upthread - "Dare" is my favorite too!

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 29 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Neneh Cherry is on "DARE," too, and Ike Turner plays piano on "Every Planet We Reach IS Dead."

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and MARTINA TOPLEY-BIRD ON "ALL ALONE". That bit is probably my favorite part of the whole album, actually.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 29 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

OH HOLY FUCK HOW GREAT ARE THE BEGINNING AND ENDING OF THE VIDEO FOR "DARE"???!????!?!?

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

(x-posts to Alex - yeah, he got embarrassed about how stupid a handle "Yoghurt Spelled Backwards Wrongly, The Dove" was and reverted to govt. name)

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

OH HOLY FUCK HOW GREAT ARE THE BEGINNING AND ENDING OF THE VIDEO FOR "DARE"???!????!?!?

I'm partial to the middle myself. It is disturbingly close to how I dance in real life.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Neneh Cherry is on "DARE," too,

Stop the fucking press! She is? Buying this TOMORROW!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah the wiggling hips are cool to watch but when he goes to the door and you get a TINY GLIMPSE of the enormous thing inside and go "oh man oh man is that on a screen?" and he opens the door and NO IT'S RIGHT THERE? and then when Murdoc wakes up? and before Murdoc wakes up? yeah.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 30 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah the wiggling hips are cool to watch but when he goes to the door and you get a TINY GLIMPSE of the enormous thing inside and go "oh man oh man is that on a screen?" and he opens the door and NO IT'S RIGHT THERE?

That's a she, dude. But yeah, the way Hewlett integrates the animation with (Bring Me) The Head Of Shaun Ryder is great; I like how it's not perfect and slick but kind of rough and...wobbly? It looks the "set" is going to come down around his ears at one point.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 30 July 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Er, wait, my bad- Cherry's on "Kids With Guns," apparently. So now I'm left wondering who sings lead vox on "DARE," which is still fucking brilliant.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 30 July 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

i have got to get this album.

reo, Saturday, 30 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

he got embarrassed about how stupid a handle "Yoghurt Spelled Backwards Wrongly, The Dove" was

Haha a friend of mine thought that was so awesome he briefly adopted the alias Emmørttel (Norwegian for "low-fat sour cream" spelt backwds).

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

Lead female vox on "Dare" by Rosie Wilson.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 30 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

That's a she, dude

Noodle's dancing, but it's 2D that opens the lab doors. (I think! I only saw it for the first time yesterday. about nine seconds before I posted.)

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

It's Noodle- and interestingly enough, there are a couple of Atari 2600 joysticks on the control panel...

Who's Rosie Wilson? Someone I should know or someone new?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
If you get a chance to see the European MTV Music Awards show on the telly, Gorillaz had this really fucking cool 3-D animated hologram projection on stage instead of puppets or whatever the fuck they'd use otherwise. Apparently they play live like this now, instead of it being Damon Albarn behind a sheet.

It was scarily cool, like something out of a William Gibson novel, only real and now.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I think they'll get a good little renewal of interest out of this, a lot of people seem to have been damn impressed with this stage show. I missed it on MTV but I'll catch it soon no doubt. I'm a lot more curious about the album now than I was... one of those "what have I passed on unfairly this year" thoughts.

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Here's a 38mb video of it.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 4 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the link.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Friday, 4 November 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

jason., Friday, 4 November 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Nevermind, I just had to update quicktime. That was a lot better than what I was expecting.

jason., Friday, 4 November 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

The YSI's effed up. Could someone gmail me directly?

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Friday, 4 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)
