I'll leave it New Yorkers to say whether this store was good or bad ((i think it was closed the last time I was in NYC and went by there), but I see that they're just going the mailorder route for the US, and are putting cds on sale. They still have a London store I believe.
STERN'S MUSIC IS CLOSING!!!
STORE-WIDE SALE: FRIDAY, MARCH 25 through SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2005
Yes, it's true: The rumors you may have heard about the closing of the
renowned world music store are real.
On April 2, 2005 Stern's Music will close its doors to move to New Jersey, to
continue as a mail-order distribution operation. This is indeed sad news for
the loyal music buyers who loved us for making available hard-to-find classic
releases, from Africa in particular, and from various parts of the world.
But do not despair - the Stern's Music website will still operate from
London's headquarter (http://www.sternsmusic.com), where you can order directly
from
a larger selection of world music titles than the store was ever able to
carry. (For a better price than the website offers, you may leave a message for
Andrea at 212-505-6897; he will try his best to satisfy your musical needs.)
Meanwhile we're having a STORE-WIDE SALE* - starting on Friday, March 25th
until Saturday, April 2nd - offering a $2.00 discount on all CDs (except CDs
already on sale at $10.00 or less). Sale applies to in-store stock only.
This will be your last chance to visit us at 71 Warren Street (bet. W.
Broadway & Greenwich St.), NYC. For further detailed information or mail orders,
please call the store at 212-964-5455.
We've sincerely appreciated your patronage and support, and we'd like to
thank you all.
Respectfully,
The staff and associates of Stern's Music, NYC

That's strange, I was just thinking about this store yesterday. My friend and I tried to go last summer when we were in NYC, but they were closed. I thought about how I'd have to make a point to go the next time I was in the city. And now I'll never get to go.
