buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it's from the Ether festival...last night.

buck van smack (Buck Van Smack), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the best thing i have heard from them since kid a, i think. (which for me is saying something very nice about it)

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone ever seen the Dexter's laboratory when the piano teacher was teaching dexter about arpeggio and the song he played fuckin killed it!?!?

this sounds great, i'm ready for more.

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

On the surface this reminds me of Philip Glass - Music in Twelve Parts. I don't know if I like it, but I'm very glad they're not playing it as safe as they were with HTTT.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Philip Glass comparison is very OTM. This is really. fucking. great.

Matt Chesnut, Monday, 28 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how the context of 'playing it safe' is mutable.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess you're right. And even by Radiohead standards they weren't playing it especially safe ("We Suck Young Blood" = ??), but it seemed like less of a jump than OK Computer -> Kid A/Amnesiac was.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This is oddly reminiscent of the last Sigur Ros EP.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just thinking Philip Glass. I wish he'd stop singing. The music is great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It also has shades of a Reich phase piece.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Glass isn't particularly forward-thinking in 2005, it seems to me, but this is still kinda pretty.

I can see this being very nice on record, but I'm sorta uninterested in this here low-qual bootleg.

Although I was just thinking "this would sound better with a violin" when the strings came in. Good job J!

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

there's something I find kind of annoyingly lazy about naming a song after arpeggios just because it features arpeggios, maybe moreso because Fugazi already did it with "Arpeggiator".

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, and really liking that periodic bass pulse.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds more like Terry Riley than Glass or Reich to me.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Thom's voice pairs beautifully with the music. A really beautiful track overall. Looking forward to more new stuff...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Any time new Radiohead stuff gets described as "a return to form" I get worried they've gone shit. I hope they never return to anyfink.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it. Sounds like they've found their muse. I'm a sucker for strings, too.

I don't expect them to be groundbreaking all the time, either. As long as they're inspired, who cares?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this (atease is down, so I've not been up to date w/ Radiohead today). Thank you soooooo much. *listens*

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

good, but I doubt I'd want a whole album like this.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's probably true, actually.

Although it sure is fun to push play again on this as soon as it's over.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like. They're flirting even moreso with the avant-garde. Can't wait for the album.. I'm sure they won't disappoint. The melody is really odd though... seems a bit barren. but hen again this isn't the finished song. I like, a lot.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the glockenspiel-like sounds are reminiscent of Reich and the way they're used is slightly Glass-like. It's beautiful in any case. The strings work well, I think. I'm stoked to hear this with studio-quality sound.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS IS AWESOME!!!!

Easily one of my top tunes of the year. Thank you so much for posting this!!!! Radiohead rocks!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The last minute or so is a trainwreck. But the potential for greatness is there.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

By which I mean the combination of the music and the lyrical melody of the line "hit the button to escape" sounds so wrong to me. I wonder how they'll talk their way out of the Glass comparisons this time, as Jonny's been a bit sniffy about that composer in the past.

Deluxe (Damian), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it just sort of meanders toward the end but otherwise it's good.
(a really good version of "where bluebirds fly" from the ether festival is floating around as well.)

La Monte (La Monte), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You know how some songs cast a spell over you? But after they're over you realize they actually kinda suck?

This is the opposite of that. During the song: "this is ok ... shame about the singing." As the song ends: "no bring it back! thom! come back!"

They may have hit their apex in terms of sadness and loveliness in one song. Best thing is, the track never sounds poignant. Christ, remember when every idm track was either playful or poignant? Ick.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

They may have hit their apex in terms of sadness and loveliness in one song

Nothing will ever beat "How To Disappear Completely" in that regard (it's porbably my #1 favorite song of all time, if I had to chooose one. Yes, I'm a huge Radiohead mark).

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite, quite striking. Really beautifully unexpected.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing to keep in mind is that this was just Johnny, Thom, and the Nazareth Orchestra, so the arrangement may end up changing in the end. That said, I'm starting to like this more as is, and it makes me kind of excited about their next release. (By the way, thanks a lot for the link!)

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, thats quite pretty - like Philip Glass remixing the Blue Nile.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you, this is exciting stuff. any word on the next release?

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wow. that's the most i've enjoyed one of their songs since kid a

steve hise, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Other comparisons OTM (Glass remixing the Blue Nile = brilliant!). But also: There's something in Yorke's voice there I've never heard before. The same thing can be heard in Jon Anderson's voice in the quieter Yes songs (I'm thinking specifically the "Soon" parts of "Gates of Delirium"). It's like they're singing in the same part of their mouth/throat or something, a similar tone or texture even given the different registers. Hearing prog in Radiohead is nothing new, of course, but previously Radiohead always sounded to me more claustrophobically English (like early Genesis) than agoraphobically cosmic (like Yes).

And, yes, thanks for this post!

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's lovely, thank you.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds similar to the music Sigur Ros did (sans singing) for the Merce Cunningham Split Sides performance w/ Radiohead.

PB, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Really nice. I agree I might hear more Terry Riley than Glass, but hey, close enough.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my......i think i have just crapped my pants.
this song is friggin awesome!!!!!!

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. Pretty.

For a song that's presumably half-finished, this is awesome!

rosie, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd have to think they wouldn't play unfinished songs too frequently, but yeah the ending does seem wanting. Front end is delicious though.

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

radiohead's done the whole packaging-weird-for-the-masses-music-in-pop-form-by-playing-it-under-a-good-melody-with-a-few-hooks-spread-out-there-somewhere before. not that i have a problem with that. pop minimalism is a good idea in my book, and this is a good song.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there MP3s of Jonny's piece Piano for Children or the Where Bluebirds Fly performance yet?

Piano for Children was fucking amazing. I recorded it, but I so hope that didn't turn out to be the only recording because mine is a bit crap.

Damn Radiohead fans only turning out for and recording the Thom tracks.

Where Bluebirds Fly was HUGE. Sounded the way I always wanted them to do There There. Big gaudy Arabic strings, Arabic singing, huge amounts of percussion...

Absolutely needs to be heard.

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.pseudoquasi.net/ether1/Radiohead%20-%20Where%20Bluebirds%20Fly%20(Ether%20Festival%2027_03_05).mp3

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently they have already recorded/written 4 other new songs that they're quite happy with and hope to have the album entirely recorded by the end of the year. And hopefully they'll tour the songs before the release like they did last time.

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

http://members.aol.com/darrenscoq/images/untitled.jpg

This sounds great. Hi Mel, hope you're going hard in London!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My god people, listen to Where Bluebirds Fly!

Melissa in London, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow - very middle eastern sounding!

-the-night-watch- (-the-night-watch-), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Jonny's "Smear" was recorded also.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is good...a little eno-ish maybe....I'm officially excited.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That's good news. Although, March seems so far away. At least it's less than a year's time. A Christmas-time leak would be just perfect.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
This song is brilliant , I believe it is one of my favorite radiohead songs. fuckin fantastic.Radiohead is the only band that could possibly pull this song off. It's definatly nothing like any of there old songs, almost sounds like Bjork.

Kyle thomas Vossenaar, Thursday, 22 September 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Could someone please yousendit again?

Hat (Hat), Thursday, 22 September 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I was gone all of March so threads like this confuse and frustrate me.

From www.aTease.com

Already causing interest online is the title "Global Hemispherical Irradiance" which refers to a process connected to global warming of which Yorke has been quite vocal of late.

Louis Friend, Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I await impatiently.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

"Global Hemispherical Irradiance"

lord they're really not keeping the denny vertigo influence a sexcret this time are they?

latebloomer: a power and finesse vocalist (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

I hope that mistake was intentional.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:46 (twenty years ago)

hahahahaha oh man

latebloomer: a power and finesse vocalist (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

"Sexcret" actually sounds like a long-lost Vertigo song or something.

latebloomer: a power and finesse vocalist (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

excitement about the reunion rumors got to my head i guess

latebloomer: a power and finesse vocalist (latebloomer), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

erklie (erklie), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

now i'll have to decide between that and the mariesza sabriel album which comes out the same day.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

"Louis Friend" = Iron Sulfide = Fool's Gold OH COME ON HAVEN'T YOU SEEN SILENCE OF THE LAMBS??

So... this IS an April Fool's joke, right?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 1 April 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha. Yeah, definitely a joke.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 1 April 2006 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Though now I fear Thom's currently scratching his chin and saying, "Global Hemispherical Irradiance isn't a bad title at all!"

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 1 April 2006 04:56 (twenty years ago)

You people are driving me crazy. I want to know what is really going on with Radiohead, for real. I want to know, and I want to know NOW. But I go to the site in question and I begin to believe it is all one big April Fool's Joke. Everyone is lying to me. It's not fair. I can't take it.

Porcupine Kiss, Novacaine Lips (Bimble...), Saturday, 1 April 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Also I just heard them on the bloody radio yesterday morning.

Porcupine Kiss, Novacaine Lips (Bimble...), Saturday, 1 April 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

On the surface this reminds me of Philip Glass - Music in Twelve Parts. I don't know if I like it, but I'm very glad they're not playing it as safe as they were with HTTT.

Unfortunately, the version being played on tour has changed completely - it keeps the guitar motif and the vocal line, but is sped up by about 50% and backed with a standard bassline and galloping percussion all the way through.

Mods, presumably it would be OK to YSI a version here, as it is live and thus not copyrighted material?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 14 May 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

it's on youtube too

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 14 May 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

So it is. Also a more minimal Thom/Jonny version from the Koko charity show.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 14 May 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

I think Pitchfork linked to it. It sounds way sub-par compared to the more drawn out version. I tend to hate on Radiohead but I thought the ether clip was excellent.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Sunday, 14 May 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Radiohead have gone more "rawk" (as far as they actually do rawk) for the next album.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Sunday, 14 May 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

radiohead songs often sound much faster/slower or more/less rocking when played live, so i wouldn't assume that the studio version is going to sound anything like either the etherfestival version or this new one...that said, i like both versions but the new rocked-out one works much, much better as a song (as opposed to an atmosphere, which is what the early version really was)...

swvl (vozick), Sunday, 14 May 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't what the new album sounds like, all I ask is they bring back the groovy videos. WHY have all their post-OK Computer videos been complete shite??

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 15 May 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

the "There There" video is awesome!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 15 May 2006 01:45 (twenty years ago)

michel gondry's "knives out" video also great.

swvl (vozick), Monday, 15 May 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

From the NME..
Thom Yorke solo album
Radiohead frontman to release 'The Eraser' in July
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke is set to release a solo album in July, it has emerged.

In a dramatic statement Yorke said the album would be called 'The Eraser' and that its "elements have been kicking round now for a few years."
"I want no crap about me being a traitor or whatever splitting up blah blah... this was all done with their blessing. And I don't wanna hear that word solo. Doesnt sound right. Ok then thats that."

He added that XL - the White Stripes UK label - would put out the album. Radiohead play Blackpool's Empress Ballroom again tonight (May 13)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 8 July 2007 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

I couldn't agree more. But at least we know they're in the studio now.

Bimble, Sunday, 8 July 2007 07:04 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't they been in there for three years?

Cunga, Sunday, 8 July 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

Much of that has been spent frolicking in haunted mansions and throwing speakers down wells, though.

Melissa W, Sunday, 8 July 2007 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised Thom doesn't just sing from the bottom of a well. It'd be like Timmy O'Toole but he'd swap preciousness with alienation and capture the nation's attention once more.

Cunga, Sunday, 8 July 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

Thom's latest post on Dead Air Space:

blank space
things are quiet here right now.

we are unable to explain.

nothing can be revealed.

we have not disappeared.

merely become invisible.

for a short time. we may be hiding in the woods.

Yeah, maybe they can be on one of those survivalist reality TV shows, "We must warn you, this is what happens when you are out in the wilderness with no amplification, kids".

Bimble, Sunday, 8 July 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe they'll do the 2-albums thing again.

Jonny Greenwood says the new album is finished.

Bimble, Sunday, 9 September 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

I'm wary.
The live versions of some of the songs rumored to be on the album are...not so good.

Let's have a new Jonny Greenwood album, amiright?

Z S, Sunday, 9 September 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. Well, I'm real sorry to hear you feel that way. I don't know if I've heard any of them aside from the one this thread is named after.

I thought the first Jonny soundtrack was boring, and I see no reason why the new one would be any different. Yeah sure, soundtracks are not necessarily designed to be thrilling on their own, but I just see it as an irritating distraction from RH.

Bimble, Sunday, 9 September 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

I just see it as an irritating distraction from RH.

Oh, come on.

Have you heard his more recent solo orchestral works? "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" is fucking undeniable. Like early Penderecki with a Debussyan shimmer. Gorgeous.

Turangalila, Sunday, 9 September 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. No I haven't. I'll give it a try.

Bimble, Sunday, 9 September 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

Eh, I was being a little pessimistic last night, I suppose. A few of the songs, including "Arpeggi", are probably going to sound great, and if they really did end up recording "Nude", finally, that song is nearly impossible to fuck up. Plus, I sort of felt this way pre-Amnesiac. The live recordings I had heard of Knives Out and Packt Like Sardines didn't really impress me too much, but when I heard them within the context of the album, they made more sense.

I would really recommend going back and listening to Bodysong again. Aside from Kid A, it's probably my favorite Radiohead-related release of this decade, and that's speaking as a huge fan of all of their work.

Z S, Sunday, 9 September 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

So they have no record deal right now? Blimey. Radiohead should just release the album themselves, they'd be stupid not to.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 September 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Haha! Yeah that's what I was thinking.

Bimble, Sunday, 9 September 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)
