I bought mine at the Ipod Store in SF last August. Is it still under guarantee? I have heard conflicting things from different people about how long the guarantee is. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Any feedback greatly appreciated...

so you're almost certainly still under warranty. but even if you weren't ... fuck it, you only bought it last august. you have statutory rights. get thee back to the shop and ask them to swap it.

I have had problems in the past and called up the Apple helpline and they claimed that only had a 3 month warranty. If so this is ridiculous! Going back to SF next week so might just try to swap it then.
And Mr. Footshuffle, I do still indeed have the paper work.

what? fucking hell. that's pathetic.
like i say, i don't know much about consumer law but i'd be fairly convinced that an MP3 player that had packed in within seven months was unfit for the purposes for which it had been purchased, and therefore needed replaced regardless of the warranty. if you're going back to SF (sorry: i assumed you lived there), that's cool: the shop is by far the best place to go.
but if that doesn't work then i'd suggest you go back to apple armed with phrases such as "trading standards", "consumers' association" and "legal action".
honestly. i love apple dearly but their customer service can be shocking.

Also try the ipodlounge.com forums and the Apple help site as they both have some useful info about fixing potentially broken pods.
I thought mine was dead for sure but after running all the diagnostic checks on it and finally restoring it, it was fine.
