Retirement Albums: No Comeback!

Inspired by ten albums that would surprise your fellow ILMers. That thread inspired me to comb my collection and resulted in an oddball/worst-of list that yielded Billy Idol's Cyberpunk. Always campy and kinda dumb at his catchy best, Billy turned into a collosal joke with this blaringly idiotic sci-fi concept album. Believe me, it's funnier in theory than in practice. And there's just no way that the upcoming Idol comeback will "measure up."

So I pose the question: what other albums were (or should be) career-enders? Who should join Billy Idol at the VH1 retirement ranch?

"Loveless"

you do realize, by the way, the Billy Idol has a new album out, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't realize it was out already. But my question stands: he SHOULD have called it quits. Without hearing it...he'll never top Cyberpunk.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Visitors" and "Synchronicity", I guess. To me, these two also stand as the ultimate achievements of these two bands and there is no way they could possibly top them.

"Let It Be" may have given the world a hint as to why The Beatles breaking up in 1970 needn't neccessarily be a bad thing.

Green Album - Weezer
Stone Roses - Stone Roses
Wu Tang Forever - Wu Tang Clan
The Fat Of The Land - Prodigy

Yeah, only problem is it was recorded prior to Abbey Road.

Billy Idol's new single "Scream" is one "blaringly idiotic" "collossal joke," possibly more embarassing than even Cyberpunk. Demands you climb up his lemon tree twice in one verse. Have faith in the man.

Yet you like Good Charlotte.

"Billy turned into a collosal joke with this blaringly idiotic sci-fi concept album."

When did anyone take him seriously? (that's a compliment)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Beefheart's musical profile has benefited from walking away and not looking back. The Captain's last album "Ice Cream for Crow" may not be his best, but it is a solid record.

Phish's Nevermind was their official career ender, but it's pretty much common consensus that their retirement album should have been a few back. I'd say Farmhouse was the last album worthwhile.

And please, nobody say that Phish's retirement release should have been "the demo tape they sent to the record label." I thought of that one too.

Yes, I know, but "Abbey Road" was very much a matter of "OK, Let's pull ourselves together one last time to produce a great last album". I think "Let It Be" is more representative of what was actually going on (or not) in The Beatles by 1969.

13 by blur

cornelius crash (cornelius crash), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If 13 had been the last Blur album, I'd be very sad (seeing as how Think Tank is my favorite).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynyrd Skynyrd owns this thread. They should have quit like 15 albums ago.

"Use Your Illusion I" - Appetite For Destruction!

rem: out of time

Nah. They should have stuck around at least through Automatic for the People, and I can make a case for New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Blur might as well have called it a day after "Blur".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stones should have quit after Tatoo You, if not earlier.

Cut the Crap by the Clash

I'd argue for Combat Rock

big star - third / sister lovers

apparently Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens are currently working on a new Big Star album with Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies.. I hope this doesn't actually happen, because it could totally ruin the whole idea of Big Star

Oasis - Be Here Now
Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty
Lo-Fidelity Allstars - How To Operate With A Blown Mind
Chemical Brothers - Surrender

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe change The Chemical's to "Come With Us"

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Heartbeat City" should have been the band's swan song. "Door To Door" was mostly worthless and tarnished a catalog that pretty much didn't miss through it's first 5 albums.

ZionTrain, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That was The Cars that I was talking about above.

ZionTrain, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Soundgarden - Superunknown. Down on the Upside was far too loud of a death knell.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Would have been too bad if Oasis had finished with "Be Here Now", as then they would never had been able to release the fantastic and highly underrated "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants".
