i say dud. only as good as most of his 90s funk tracks. good lyrics, throwaway melody though. he can do better.

ppp, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does he have to feature anyone else?

Bad Day At Dadrock (Dada), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

more than that, why does he have to replay the riff from dr dre's dre day for the music?

ppp, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, by rights this should be the greatest thing ever; I must hear this NOW.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

only as good as most of his 90s funk tracks.

He didn't do much in the 90s, mind you. I found "Conversation Peace" a surprisingly good album. Haven't heard the new single yet, but since "Coversation Peace", he has had several of his hits covered, and his back catalogue rising in all those "best albums ever" lists again, so I hope he will get the mainstream comeback he deserves. There's so much more to him than "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and "Part Time Lover", and it would be a pity if those two ended up as his two last major hits.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir OTM.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

... and it's not often you can say that!

Bad Day At Dadrock (Dada), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, "Characters" isn't too bad; much better than "In Square Circle" at any rate. Maybe I'm biased because none of its singles were big hits.

Where can you find the song?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I just shot my toe!

BARMS, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Anybody have a link to this?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard it last week and thought it was some early 90's castoff they dug in the crates for(I *was* listening to Stevie's radio station after all). The energy is there but the 'knee deep' bassline is disheartening.
Dud, but vibrant enough to give me hope for the album.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

dud song. conversation peace was mostly dud too, save 'treat myself' which, on perverse days, is a favourite.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, "Characters" isn't too bad; much better than "In Square Circle" at any rate.

There were several good songs on "In Square Circle" as well. Only the hit wasn't among them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, Geir - I should have pointed out that I didn't like the singles much. The album tracks are weirder. "Land of La La" is a fucked up little ditty.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Land Of La La" was a single, but not a hit.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The song isn't bad, but it doesn't really go anywhere, which is kind of surprising because Stevie has the musical ability to make the song go places.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the single is a dud, but the tracks off the album that i have heard are fantastic, best stuff he's done since Hotter than July

Brotherman, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Overjoyed" is fantastic

a banana (alanbanana), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I was waiting for someone to say that. Banana OTM!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Stevie have better things to do than try to trick all our ears into thinking his chorus has a dirty word? Still, this probably could've been worse. Brotherman has me foaming at the mouth.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Overjoyed" is fantastic

yes!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevie's coasting, alas. Has been for the past 20+ years.

ffirehorse, Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

When does this album come out/when does it leak?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I liked this song, i was digging it. I liked the remix(es) with Q-Tip on them even better.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

'What's the Fuss?'

Using Prince to strum that weak hook and En Vogue to sing (I shit you not) "Shame-shame-shamity-shame" is like killing a housefly with a pair of cannons.
This ain't too hot. I'm gonna hold fast to the possibility that this is the weak track.
I really do like what Stevie's done over the last twenty years or so; it just pales in comparison to what he did during the 'Talking Book' period. I mean, you gotta figure after Washington won independence from the British that the whole President thing was probably a let down...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the remixes with q-tip are just the song stuck over a loop of mobb deep's shook ones pt 2. its shit.

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

who has the album???

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like this song.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

im starting to think you like everything Lex!

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I love music!

I don't like Bloc Party though.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this single sounds like a bad jungle fever outtake! i hope theres better on the album.

ppp, Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I really liked it too, only heard it once tho

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

miss lady girl, Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

whups. I erred.
track here.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

huh - there are things that I like about this track, and its amazing how Stevie's voice has not aged AT ALL in 40 years, but yeah it kinda just sits there and goes nowhere. Needs a better chorus and some sort of instrumental turnaround/variety, horn stabs or something...
