he's got a whole chapter in one of the Unterberger books (probably what's on that site), but i've never heard any of his stuff

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You never heard the original "Mr. Pharmacist" on the Nuggets box?

Search: "Feathered Fish"

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a fan. I even bought his "comeback album", Guitar God from 1998. It's not half bad! It has a remake of "Blue My Mind" on it. and Paul Whaley on drums!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, wait, Guitar God was '96 not '98. My bad.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Q: And Blue Cheer was really loud...

R: Oh, no it wasn't. It was quiet. It was placid and peaceful. It was what you listen to when you're eighty years old in your rocking chair. Population II, now, that was another matter. That was nuclear.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a pretty great interview with Randy Holden back in the day in that one fanzine ... Baseball Furies or something like that? Baseball Diaries? What the hell was that thing called? Guy that lived in the Pacific Northwest put it out...

I used to have another record on the Hobbit label -- Plain Jane was the name of the group. It was kind of light-sounding stuff. I traded it to a catalog guy ("Kick Out the Jams") for I think a copy of the first Mad River lp and possibly a Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company lp. But I did make a tape of it first. It's not too bad, I think I underrated it at the time.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm .. Popsike has one listing of the Plain Jane record, for 37 Euros. How much in Amerikkkan $$ is 37 Euros? I honestly have no idea. I get the feeling that the Mad River and Mother Mallard probably don't amount to 37 Euros though.. I probably lost out on that trade.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Feminist Baseball

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

right, that's it! Thanks, Tim! Yeah it was a really good, in-depth interview.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

37 euros is like 50 bucks.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

did you ever hear that story about how that first mad river album was mastered wrong or something and it's way faster than it should be. makes sense if you hear it. it's ultra-speedy.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No I never heard of that before! I could see it. The guys voice is insane sounding. Like, he seriously sounds completely crazy. It's a creepy record.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

One of these records was just reished on teh vinyl, wasn't it? I'm so curious to hear this stuff.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Aquarius has some vinyl reissue copies of Population II for sale. Just up on their new New Arrivals list.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanx Tim. I like this record; my girlfriend has it, and I listened to it once.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Howcum Richie Unterberger's always insisting that Chris Lockheed played drums and keyboards SIMULTANEOUSLY throughout Population II? I can't hear a single damn key, lousy though the recording is! Altho the liner notes do say "Note: Chris plays bass on live appearances," so maybe he means keyboard bass. Not on the LP as far as I can tell, however. Actually, I think it's weird that Unterberger gave Holden an entire chapter in his "Unknown Heroes" book since he's never distinguished himself as a fan of (or knowledgable about) the heavier sounds. (Dissed Sir Lord Baltimore in the AMG, making him my ENEMY!) Actually, I personally preferred Leigh Stephens and his stumblebum approach. But I've never heard the Other Half (aside from "Mr. Pharmacist") so I probably haven't got all the facts.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 17 April 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Progressive Line/Dole Music in Sydney just reissued Population II on CD with eight bonus tracks...

Where the fuck did these bonus tracks come from?? Jesus. They sound far clearer and more momentous than the original album tracks on this CD.

DOQQUN (donut), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

verbatim track listing (noted because

1.guitar song 6:06
2.fruit & icebergers 5:59
3.between time 1:48
4.fruit & iceburgers (conclusion) 1:48
5.blue my mind 6:01
6.keeper on my flame 10:07 (NOTE: should be "of" -- misspelled on CD)

bonus tracks

7.dark eyes 4:58
8.wild fire 5:34
9.scarlet rose 3:57
10.pain in my heart 5:30
11.hell and high water 5:30
12.no trace 4:00
13.got love 3:47
14.blue my mind 4:03

Is it possible that the bonus tracks are Guitar God? Listening more closely, they sound louder and faster, but a bit more, for lack of a better term, pedestrian sounding(?)

DOQQUN (donut), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that is the tracklist for Guitar God (minus the tracks "Castle in the Sky" and "Dark Eyes Part Two") ... a record I thought was pretty darn good and better than to be expected, but never play..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

It does have Paul Whaley on it, which is nice ... and looks like Blue Cheer are touring the states this summer, Peterson, Whaley and some hack ... why doesn't Randy rejoin them?? Must be some bad blood between him and Dickie.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Thank you! Turns out there are two unlisted bonus tracks, making it a total of ten bonus tracks. I'm quite sure these are "Castle In The Sky" and "Dark Eyes Part Two", respectively, which would complete Guitar God...

I'm happy both of these got a reissue on CD, and the sound isn't too bad... but the handling/designing of this CD's package is absolutely fucked. What the hell are the art/design folks at Progressive Line smokin'?

Hide that! LIke he did when Hendrix tried to steal his settings!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

Having heard that reissued-w/bonus tracks version of Population II in the interim, I've had to alter my opinion way-upwards since my '05 post above. Turns out my first copy was in fact the worst-sounding bootleg CD in history, so I wasn't hearing it properly. I like it a lot more now, yay. (Still can't hear any trace of keyboard, tho??)

(And shouldn't that "reverb" be turned way up?)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll re-google for "sunn amp with reverb turned up like randy used to do".

I got one of the Line re-issues on vinyl, and the sonics kill.

briania, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that record is amazing - i love that laser-beam tone.

69, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

he loves the sound of a guitar playing

am0n, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Last year I picked up that Captain Trip early years thing, with all of his surf bands on it .. expectations were low but it's actually totally sweet.

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

um, just a quick shout-out for one of the great garagepsych records of all time while i'm here:

http://popsike.com/pix/20040618/4020005322.jpg

just cuz i didn't see enough shouting out about it on this thread.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'll rep for that one, too, and it's a surprisingly easy album to find. I mean compared to some of the comparable monsters.

briania, Thursday, 10 April 2008 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

the other half album is totally underrated by dudes who should know better. maybe because it's easy to find, maybe it's easy to find because it's underrated...

can't believe i never posted to say THE LOVE FOR RANDY HOLDEN IS WALKING A TIGHTROPE OF LIQUID STEEL THROUGH MY EARS.

Turns out my first copy was in fact the worst-sounding bootleg CD in history, so I wasn't hearing it properly.

oh, man, i had a burn of this for my first copy of the album. quite possibly the worst boot of an album next to the nitro function one on lizard. just wretched. (also, i don't think there are keyboards.)

Great album great tune.

Still kind of amazed that they interviewed Randy on Metal Evolution and didn't mention Population II at all. KIND OF A METAL RECORD GUYS.

I've loved Population II for years, but I'm so happy that Riding Easy was finally able to reissue it legally and with his blessing.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 14:35 (six years ago)

yes + the remastering job:

“The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,” Holden says. “They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.”

+ this from the riding easy website:

To make this official, Randy will be signing each copy of the gatefold LP, if it doesn’t have his signature on it, it is not a legitimate pressing.

!

budo jeru, Wednesday, 29 April 2020 17:02 (six years ago)

I know this reissue isn't exactly going to light the world on fire, but good for Randy and I hope he finally gets some decent pocket change for this one.

As goofy as their stoner branding can be, I respect the folks at Riding Easy for this and for how they are only reissuing songs for their Brown Acid series after they've tracked down the artists and gotten their permission. They mentioned when the ninth volume came out that they still have a "long list of songs that we'd love to include", but they can't track down the musicians.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 29 April 2020 17:24 (six years ago)

Ha, I realize that we shouldn't necessarily be giving them praise for exactly what every label should be doing when reissuing old music, but it's still kinda rare, esp in the world of old proto-metal and garage rock, that they deserve some credit for not taking the easy way out.

Time for...Population III

https://randyholden.bandcamp.com/album/population-iii

Recorded a little over a decade back per the liner notes, but apparently Holden gave it a relisten and thought "Yeah this works."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 April 2022 14:46 (four years ago)

Meh. Population II is still amazing, but this new song is...not.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 28 April 2022 15:00 (four years ago)

Yeah, its... fine I guess. Population II is still an absolute beast.

Speaking of Brown Acid, I always post the press releases on Rolling Reissues---here's most of the latest, from a couple weeks ago:

...Lance Barresi, owner of L.A.-based Permanent Records and the Permanent Records Roadhouse, has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.

"I essentially go through hell and high water just to find these records," Barresi says. "Once I find a record worthy of tracking, I begin the (sometimes) extremely arduous process of contacting the band members and encouraging them to take part. Daniel and I agree that licensing all the tracks we're using for Brown Acid is best for everyone involved," rather than simply bootlegging the tracks. When all of the bands and labels haven't existed for 30-40 years or more, tracking down the creators gives all of these tunes a real second chance at success.

"There's a long list of songs that we'd love to include," Barresi says. "But we just can't track the bands down. I like the idea that Brown Acid is getting so much attention, so people might reach out to us."

Brown Acid: The Fourteenth Trip will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download on April 20, 2022 via RidingEasy Records. Pre-orders are available for digital at Bandcamp, physical pre-orders at RidingEasy Records.
