Chuck Klosterman on Ashlee Simpson

now, i feel irresponsible starting this thread with no text to give anyone, but i read Klosterman's article in the most recent spin while i was at a bookstore today, and it struck me as the most elementary analysis ever.

"People dislike ashlee simpson because she tries too hard"

well, obviously, she did have a television show documenting her recording career before she had recorded a note.

does anyone have this article to post on here?

This article puzzled and disappointed me. It seemed fairly obvious and rudimentary for someone like Chuck Klosterman--after reading the article I had to check for his name again to make sure it was really his writing.

Still, good graces from the REO/Styx/Journey piece from a couple issues ago haven't been used up.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

elementary yes, but that line about not being able to discern the difference between T.O. and Karen O is pretty fantastic.

Chuck Klosterman on Ashlee Simpson

An unsavory image.

"People dislike ashlee simpson because she tries too hard"

No, people dislike Ashlee Simpson because she's a spoiled, talentless little twerp.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i was so happy with Sex Drugs and Coco Puff about a year ago, i read it in several hours. i really couldnt believe that the author of that book would write such a shallow stupid article.

oh well, even babe ruth struck out every once in a while, as the saying goes.

i guess the real question is "Why do people like Ashlee Simpson?"

JD from CDepot, Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my favorite quote on C K from S S (scott seward): "It's like he's growing a brain in public." Doesn't really relate to this incident, but it should be mentioned.

djdee (djdee2005), Thursday, 31 March 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

An almost correct sentence.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, JD, too "sick" to come in to work today, not too "sick" to start an Ashlee Simpson thread, huh?

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 31 March 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I kid...I kid 'cuz I love

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 31 March 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha dude, i just wasnt up to it, i was sick with springtime

i sat on my front porch and read a carter family biography

JD from CDepot, Thursday, 31 March 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that is why i hate you

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps he should have pointed out how lovable her sister is for NEVER trying at all.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's that guy?? Her boyfriend?? The guy who spends 5 hours trying to make his hair look like he didn't spend any time on it.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's shocking that chuck klosterman tossed off an elementary 'analysis' of a cultural phenomena that he doesn't understand, that hasn't happened since, what, last month?

maura (maura), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

wow maura, that was some hard hitting commentary. can i subscribe to your newsletter?

JD from CDepot, Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as I love his writing, when I really think (or talk) about his articles/theories, I never really agree with any of them.

JD, stop it, Maura's nice!

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a good way of putting it, Nathalie (re: Chuck).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

if jaded is the new nice, than maybe she is nice.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there some new thread-starting criteria requiring that the information presented therein be shocking to someone?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Klosterman makes more sense if I imagine he's writing every article and review while sitting on a couch watching MTV circa the early 1990s. There's a stack of empty pizza boxes next to the couch.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"They're just jealous of Ashlee Simpson's freedoms."

true. and if you picture him looking exactly like an old boyfriend of mine, then it works all the better. except that my ex wouldnt really think much about heavy metal.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm realizing that whatever I enjoyed about his writing was already said by Chuck Eddy 10-15 years ago, when it was less safe champion pop metal and cheese. I'm not sure how I feel about the theory behind his Ashlee Simpson article. If we use the "trying too hard" as a reason, then we should hate so-called earnest indie rock and emo dudes for the same reason. Well at least I do.

And by the way, Maura is awesome.

Sara Sherr, Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if he'll change his mind about Ashlee after he sees her new Pizza Hut commercials.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Saturday, 2 April 2005 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

if jaded is the new nice, than maybe she is nice.

this doesn't even make sense!!!

(hi nath and sara!!)

maura (maura), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

(hi!)

yeah i was thinking it was due to my crap english that i couldn't understand that line.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Saturday, 2 April 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi to all of you!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 2 April 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, maura is awesome. who the fuck are you?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 2 April 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ho derre!

charleston charge (chaki), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth, I'm tipping "Lala" as the single that hipsters hate now, but come end of year, will realise they love.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

what? thats dumb.

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

maria seconded. maura = awesome. klosterman jockrider = who?

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

how does being awesome exempt someone from being jaded, btw? isn't it possible to be both?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 3 April 2005 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(well yeah, but you can be jaded and nice, too)

maura (maura), Sunday, 3 April 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(this thread has placed that indie rock aerosmith song from a couple of years back in my head btw)

maura (maura), Sunday, 3 April 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"For what it's worth, I'm tipping "Lala" as the single that hipsters hate now, but come end of year, will realise they love. "

Yeah I can see this happening. This year's "Sk8ter Boi"! I love it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 April 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Did the hipsters hate "Sk8er Boi"? I thought it was Loved.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 April 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember it as being loved and hated in equal amounts. But I do not know these "hipsters" people keep bringing up.

Ashlee r0x0r.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 3 April 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure all songs are loved and hated at this point.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 3 April 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-b-b-but not in equal amounts!!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 3 April 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the second law of popdynamics -- the conservation of opinion!
