My friend who knows much more about music than I do recommended me these albums from his personal collection to get started...does anyone know anything about them..?

Avalanches - Since I Left You
Bardo Pond - On Ellipse
Blur - Parklife
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Introducing...
Primal Scream - Vanishing Point
Wolf Eyes - Dead Hills

I know who Blur is, but I haven't really gotten into them.

you should listen to them.....

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Avalanches album is easily the most brilliant sample-based pop* album ever released. Perfect for spring; recontextualizes so-called "cheesy" '60s and '70s AM pop into a phenomenal megamix. "Electricity" is the peak; download that track first and see what you think.

Vanishing Point is OK. A lot of people snark on Primal Scream and for good reason (XTRMNTR, more than any rock album of the last 5 years, cries out for an instrumental version; the music is just that good and the lyrics/vox are just that grating) but Vanishing Point is probably their best; the title track is atmospherically dirge-psych-industrial-funk goodness and "Trainspotting" is a fantastic weirdo-lounge track.

The rest? Damned if I know.

I'm shocked you haven't heard Genesis, Nate.

man i haven't heard that disc since i was 15. whats the one goes "it is re-ee-al, it is rae-ae-al"?

"We are the lamia of the pooooooollll!"

Love at the Pier (Arthur), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Introducing.. is a fine, er, introduction to Gorky's, but Barafundle or Spanish Dance Troupe might be a safer bet. You can't go wrong with any of them, though

As for Bardo Pond, Dilate might have a slight edge on On Ellipse

Parklife is f**ng ace!

Wolf Eyes = EXTREME NOISE TERROR!! (from my hometown nonetheless. nice guys, natch) They obviously rule!

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

jack, just to clarify yngwie's statement a bit, EXTREME MOISE TERROR means EXTREME NOISE TERROR! Wolf Eyes will send you to hell and bring you back all charred and shit. Be wary. Don't put it on expecting something like DFA 1979 or something this hit will really kick your ass. Its good stuff though.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

dead hills is good but you wanna get dread.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

EXTREME MOIST TERROR!!??

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Blur were at the zenith of their career for Parklife.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Since I Left You is great, but, honestly, a lot of those albums are pretty mediocre. He did present you a variety of different music, but there are a lot better albums you could check out in the same genre... I guess I'll make some suggestions. The ones I don't mention are legit (although I've never heard The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway):

Bardo Pond - On Ellipse Mogwai - Young Team
Blur - Parklife Pulp - Different Class
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Introducing... The Soft Machine - Vol. 1/Vol. 2
Primal Scream - Vanishing Point The Stone Roses - S/T
Wolf Eyes - Dead Hills Black Dice - Beaches and Canyons or Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

no not MOIST, moisE. whoops typo. Poortheatre probably has the best idea, although I like Parklife.

jmeister (jmeister), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

mogwai doesn't sound anything like bardo pond.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's also misleading to compare latter-career Primal Scream with the the acid daze of Screamadelica, and thus the Stone Roses in general. Though they arguably had the most in common in 1994/5 when they were both aping the Stones and Zep respectively and doing mountains of blow.

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

soft machine is great tho. everybody should like them.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Apart from Wolf Eyes who I don't know, the rest is all great. I especially lovelovelove PS and Avalanches. Whatever happened to them?

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a vote for the Gorky. It's treated me well for the past few months since I ambled into them without knowing wtf to expect except that they had mad ILM love... they're worth your time!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 31 March 2005 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry. Those are kind of misleading. I just figured that he might want to start with some broader, unanimously praised albums form the genres.... but you don't think Bardo Pond and Mogwai sound similar? I've only heard one of their albums. so... /poseur

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

bardo pond are way better.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Wait.

Did he give you these albums, or tell you to buy them? If he just burned them for you, then listen away. I thought he gave you some list and was like, "DUDE-- Buy. These. Albums." Nevermindkinda.

bardo pond are way better.

ILM user rockaction rolls in his grave/bed.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"no not MOIST, moisE. whoops typo." = Extreme Moist Error (har har har..)

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

..they had mad ILM love...

Haha! I always figured they were largely ignored by the majority of ILMers apart from a handful of hardcore fans. I guess it's the same with a lot of the acts who get talked about on this board. I always assume that everyone who posts here is crazy about Vitalic, My Bloody Valentine and Dizzee Rascal.

Avalanches - Since I Left You

Solely sample based pop. Quite interesting on the basis that nothing sounds anything like what was originally sampled.

Blur - Parklife

Great collection of influences from classic English pop.

Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Everything they did in that period was great, and this is no exception. The concept of the album is kind of hard to grasp, but the music is wonderful concept prog that one just can't argue with.

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Introducing...

Not familiar with this album, but Gorky's are generally worth checking out. Quirky bunch, a bit like a more song-oriented Incredible String Band, but also with lots of snippets of old English medieval music etc..

Primal Scream - Vanishing Point

Their most underrated work IMO. The one PS album worth having besides "Screamadelia" (and also the one that is most stylistically similar to "Screamadelia")

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Avalanches definitely worth a listen. I still really enjoy Frontier Psychiatrist years on. Not to mention "Since I Left You" is a great wave off song to an ex. Up there with "Gone" by Ben Folds for sheer joyous vitality!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the avalanches was one of my favourite albums for ages when it came out and i still really love it too. the sampling is awesome, i love the horse neighing and the sounds of birds and dialogue from movies. i still notice stuff i've never noticed before when i listen to it. thus i recommend it!

gem (trisk), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

also i really like parklife as an album to have on when i'm getting ready for work in the morning. i can sing along to it and totally enjoy the melodies without giving it too much thought. uncomplicated pop i guess.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

doglatin: re: Haha! I always figured they were largely ignored by the majority of ILMers apart from a handful of hardcore fans.

Well, they DID get something like four albums in the ILX top 100...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The biggest Gorky fan from a.m.a (Persi) has never made it to ILM though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

which four gorky's albums? i only remember 'how i long...' and that was only in the 2000's poll.
