Question for A/V folks: Am I about to get ripped off by Sennheiser?

This is a really petty question, but...

Today the left channel on my Sennheiser HD-497 headphones died. There was no yanking or water involved, I was walking along and it kind of faded out. I plugged the right channel cable into the left headphone and it worked fine, so there must be some break in the cable. I've had them for about seven months and haul them everywhere, every day, so it's understandable... Sennheiser is telling me they are the only people that can sell me this part. It's going to cost me about $11 and it will take about a week to get here... Radioshack and Circuit City don't seem to sell it, at least according to their website.

Is there somewhere else I should go? Is this common? Here's a picture of the cable:

Thanks! (Again, petty question)

Looks like a full-size stereo jack to two mono mini-jacks. If you have any soldering skills you should be able to make a cable like that up quite easily, so you should be able to buy one. Full-size stereo jack to two full-size mono jack is extremely common - known as an Insert cable (or Y cable) - as it is used to connect effect boxes like compressors into a mixer.

It might be wiser to stick with Sennheisser, though, they make good solid gear - and I could be wrong!

In fact, the easy availabilty of spares is Sennheisser's big strength.

I'm pretty sure that I've bought that exact thing at Radio Shack.

the answer is yes, since they should just send the chord to you for free.

shure replaced my earbud headphones after i lost one channel not once but twice -- and without a receipt cuz i bought them from someone on ebay. in the meantime they have redesigned the chord around where the problem was, so i don't expect it to happen again.
