The Former:
"I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" by My Chemical Romance
"Popular" by Nada Surf
"Smokin' in the Boys Room" by Motley Crue
"I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister
"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger

The Latter:
"You Got Lucky" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakes
"Knockin' At Your Back Door" by Deep Purple
"Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol
"Listen Like Thieves" by INXS
"All She Wants to Do is Dance" by Don Henley

DISQUALIFIED: "Adult Education" by Hall & Oates, as it's a song set in a post-apocalyptic locale about high school.

GO!

Deftones 'Back To School' vs Duran Duran 'Wild Boys'

Korn 'the one with the kid vomiting milk' vs Michael Jackson 'Earth Song'

Sven Basted (blueski), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well based on those five examples, High School easy. I mean c'mon. "Sister Christian"! "Popular"! I do very much like the "You Got Lucky" video, though.

Also for post-apocalyptic, 2Pac and Dre's "California Love".

"Hot For Teacher" vs. "Synchronicity II"

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' vs Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire'.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, I didn't mean solely the examples I cited (i meant to write "others..?" underneath each category).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The winner takes on videos set in prison (Jermaine Jackson's "Dynamite!")

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

But I think h.s. vids wins. More hotness, particularly where shower scenes are involved. No one looks hot in the apocalypse.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Leonard Nimoy - 'Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' Vs Twisted Sister 'I Wanna Rock' (or was it Were Not Going To Take It)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The champion is still videos set in vaguely industrial sites.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

like Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)"?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is that sigur ros video disqualified? its set in a school & the ending is post-apocalyptic.

zappi (joni), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha, but it's not a high school. The distinction is important, you see.

Outkast's "Roses" vs., well, something. Can't think of anything post-apocalyptic that hasn't been covered yet, much to my shame.

We don't need another hero.
We don't need to find the way home.
All we want is what's beyond ... The Thunderdome.

Are there any videos set in post-secondary institutions?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bust a Move" by Young MC vs. "Think" by Information Society

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

...scrath "Bust a Move" and make that "Principal's Office"

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Britny Fox's "Girlschool" + Dwight Twilley's "Girls" = something for everybody. We don't need another post-apocalyptic vid, Alex's convincing argument notwithstanding.

"Baby Hit Me One More Time" vs "Stigmata"
the scale tips toward armageddon...

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that Missy Elliot high school video. I love most TV programs shot in high schools (Freaks n Geeks, My So-called Life, etc.). I think anything shot in a high school wins my heart (except if we're talking Red Lake or Columbine).

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No one looks hot in the apocalypse.

Then you haven't seen Duran Duran's video for Wild Boys.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: what about JoJo?

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

what about "Jeremy"?
high school's not off the hook

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Foo Fighters video [song?] set in high school, he's in love with the girl in his drama class... BEST.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Blink-182's "Feeling This," which is like a high school in prison?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Best prison video = "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos"

Yngwie AlmsteenMay (sgertz), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I do very much like the "You Got Lucky" video, though.

Imagine seeing that in 2005 for the first time and thinking "eh?" The video was cool then for putting present day technology into the past, and now here it is the future.

It's kinda like how when I was a kid, I realized that I was the same age as Rick Deckard.

We don't need no education.

britney all the way.

deru, Friday, 1 April 2005 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Post-Apocalyptic settings were good for 80s metal, as you could put plenty of ripped up clothes on hot women. Examples:

The Scorpions- Rock You Like A Hurricane
This one also has the classic setup with the band playing in a cage, while the fans rabidly shake the bars.

Motley Crue- Too Young To Fall In Love
Nikki Sixx also shows some Ninja moves in this one and pentagrams go flying off of the kick drums.

Then again the finest example of 80s video set in a high school is Van Halen's "Hot for Children". I wonder what the teacher is going to look like this year. I don't feel tardy. Class dismissed.

earlnash, Friday, 1 April 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Err...."Hot for Teacher", you mean.

Wrong. The pentagram trick is from "Looks that Kill".

Are there any videos set in post-secondary institutions?

Sort of one. There's a Tears for Fears video (Head Over Heels) that was filmed in the U of T library.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 1 April 2005 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

the U of T library that looks like a post-apocalyptic fortress?
