The band might not be on the street, but I suspect the cameraman is.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if N.W.A. are on the street in that photo (as opposed to in, say, a courtyard) but I do know that Compton is not Los Angeles.

It [Compton] is home to almost 100,000 citizens. Known as the “Hub City” because of its unique position in almost the exact geographical center of Los Angeles County... nobody specified city over county!

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, it's the only one so far literally shot on the street.

</stupid pun>

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, just bein' catty, it's a kinda bogus distinction in L.A. innit. So bring on those thousands of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica covers as well.

kelpie, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This image is terrible but the actual gatefold is a 180 degree panorama of Beverly Blvd. and you can see a recognizable aquarium which is now a Design Within Reach store.

By "aquarium" I mean fish store. And the album is Charles Wright - Doing What Comes Naturally in case the picture is illegible on your monitor.

Damn, who did an album cover in front of the Watts Towers? I thought for sure it was Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman but I can't find anything. Did I imagine this?

The Circle Jerks album cover is San Francisco. The building with the diagonal pillars is the world famous Transamerica Building.

I found it! I couldn't have been more wrong about the artist though. Don't know why I was thinking Don Cherry...

No, you're right. It's the cover of Brown Rice Couldn't find a link to the cover online though.

(well, technically Lake Hollywood there)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

always assumed it was la. could be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure that's not LA. There's a good book that details the stories behind the designs of many famous album covers. I don't remember where that shot was taken but I want to say it was on vacation at a castle in Switzerland or something jet-settingly fabulous. Also, one of those women was Michael Karoli's girlfriend.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is the book if anyone cares:

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, here it is:
http://www.superseventies.com/ac26countrylife.html

It was shot in Portugal and the woman in question, Constanze Karoli was Michael Karoli's sister, not girlfriend.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, one of those women was Michael Karoli's girlfriend.

I thought it was his daughter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)
