Langhorne Slim's When the Sun's Gone Down - retro schtick or real deal?

I'm really digging this album though it seems to have gone largely unnoticed thus far. When I saw Langhorne live, it took a few songs before I could get past the schtick (pin striped suit, suspenders, bowler cap, mannered attitude) but he really won me over. While he's a hell of a lot of fun live solo, on album, backed with other musicians, I think it works even better. There's something a bit Jon Spencer-ish in his cultivated inauthenticity, but I'll be damned if I don't love it. Anyone else have any thoughts?

apparently noone else seems to care. I kinda like it too, but I'm not overwhelmed by it.

He's the real fuckin' deal. And I'm not just saying that because he is truly one of my greatest friends and I have a writing credit on that album.

Seriously, The Horne knows very well how I feel about his 'schtick' - i'm no fan of minstrel yuks either - but that guy can WRITE - listen to the songs, man, the heart is so THERE. Getting past the persona (which is actually pretty close to the real guy anyway) is easy when you really listen to what the brother's saying.

Classic all the way.

REAL DEAL. dude is obviously just bursting with heart, and yelping in tune is all he can do to keep it from overwhelming him. Rog's song is fantastic. destined for sing-along classic status. left me salivating for Harem.... which i see is finally out. if you'll excuse me...

'Checking Out'? Innit? I like bits of this album a lot but there are a few other bits that are kind of generic cowpunk by numbers

I guess Langhorne Slim's drummer, Malachi De Lorenzo, is the son of Violent Femmes' drummer, Victor De Lorenzo.

Here's Langhorne Slim & the Law along with the Lumineers doing a sweet cover of the Violent Femmes' "I Held Her In My Arms"
