roisin murphy - 'ruby blue'

been listening to this roisin murphy solo record, produced by matthew herbert. am surprised there is not a thread already devoted to it. there was a hilarious mixmag piece where the interview sniffily asked of the album "it's not going to be JAZZY is it?", and i suppose it has its moments, but it's a much more successful deployment than the big band record (which i nonetheless enjoyed quite a bit, btw.) but it's the gnarled, odd pop songs that do it (the title track). "sow into you" is close to genius. it certainly feels like a true collaboration, as both murphy and herbert's aesthetics are on clear display - very strong entente cordiale, i should think.

downer: the full version of "love in the making" is relegated to the second "sequins" ep only - you just get the one-minute 'prelude' on the album.

possible downer: i have a strange feeling that this record may go the way of another recent herbert-related project, dani siciliano's 'likes', which just disappeared on release. from recollection, only marcello carlin and angus gordon had the taste and smarts to rate it high by the end of the year. here's hoping roisin's record does better.

jwd, Friday, 6 May 2005 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Roisin, so it shouldn't disappear so easily. I'd love to hear it, though...I know a few people who have been very excited about this collaboration since word first leaked about it.

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Friday, 6 May 2005 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I picked this up on Tuesday from a charity shop on Goodge Street for 50p.

I'm not a fan of Moloko, but I did like 'Do You Like my Tight Sweater', but I had no idea until I picked it up it was produced by Matthew Herbert and thought for 50p I couldn't really go wrong.

I like it a lot, and agree with jwd, its got some really classy twisted pop tunes on it, her voice sounds absolutely lovely and it does sound like a true collaboration.

(I also got Sly and Robbie's Taxi Sound 30th Aniversary for 50p as well, so will be checking that place out again soon...)

actionjackson, Friday, 6 May 2005 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

When is the album released? The bits of the EPs I've heard have been very special but the album looks like it might be going to be a bit buried. Initially I thought it was going to be marketed as some kind of gigantic triumphant Gwen-style globe-straddling solo coming-of-age thing, but, unlikely, maybe.

Alex Linsdell (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm loving this ep, its actually one of my favorites all year. The "night of the dancing flames" track is fantastic. I've never been a big moloko fan either. I was sceptical at first becacuse the herbert/dani effort was just awful, but was pleasantly suprised.

I understand that there is going to be a 3rd Ep in the sequin's series, have any of you heard it yet?

temeraire (r h), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sow Into You" is a pretty genius single - Herbert seamlessly adding his big band/jazz fixation to house without sounding cheesy. I featured it on my Stylus podcast this week.

Also : Sequin 2 > Sequins 1

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Album is coming June 13, and it's totally gorgeous 21st Century disco. Some great singing.

Oooh, this is exciting.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It's quite groovy, to add my voice to the chorus.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 7 May 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

have only heard the first two sequins, and even if Sequins 3 is a complete dud, I'll have to say this one of the best albums of the year (and as people have noted, it's been a good year).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 7 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

even if Sequins 3 is a complete dud

And it's not, because it has "If We're In Love", the great big hit single that you'll be humming all Summer into your (prospective) lover's ear!

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 8 May 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Off on it" is almost unlistenable, and "Love in the making" is kind of boring (so it's good that the album only includes the 1-min prelude to the song), but the middle stretch of the album -- from "Through time" to "Sow into you" to *especially* "Dear diary" to "If we're in love" and "Ramalama" -- is just ace.

I fancy picking it up.

Is it anything like Dani Siciliano's? That was great.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

intrigued!! wasn't wild about dani's (save for a few songs), but still... intrigued!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

anyone care to YSI something juicy?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

i would slocki, except i am on dialup here and would take approx. forever. (also i haven't digested it enough yet to pick out the best tracks.) i never did hear the dani solo alb (though i suppose i should), but this is easily the best thing herbert has done since bodily functions.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

i thought Dani's was a bit boring but i should give it another chance perhaps. i didn't think much of the Nirvana cover.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I downloaded something that sounded like heavy metal.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

the nirvana cover was terrible. "walk the line" was nice though! but yeah, a little boring all told.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Strongo is pretty OTM, I'm surprised how good the whole disc is. It's also much better than that food album Herbert just put out.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

whats the difference between this and those molobert things?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

i have a strange feeling that this record may go the way of another recent herbert-related project, dani siciliano's 'likes', which just disappeared on release. from recollection, only marcello carlin and angus gordon had the taste and smarts to rate it high by the end of the year.

And me! And me! Likes was my #9 album of last year...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

the roisin album is much funkier, leaner and hook-laden than the siciliano one, which i thought had some good ideas going on but was overall too clunky and boring...also, roisin's voice really shines in her record

hopefully matthew herbert's profile will rise after this collaboration and we can look forward to more of his work in a pop context

manuel (manuel), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

i was going to get this but, having missed this thread until now, am confused by all the references to various 'sequins'. are there some earlier releases I should listen to first? or is the album self-contained emough not to require any further context? clarification, plz!

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I think all the songs on the various Sequins EPs are on the album. Which is fantastic.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

In a marketing move that is either sheer genius or utter stupidity, Roisin released three 12" EPs (Sequins 1-3), each with four songs. Eleven of the songs are now on the Ruby Blue album: the exception is "Love in the making" (from Sequins 2), which is only on the album as a 1-min instrumental "prelude."

brittle-lemon, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

thanks! so roisin murphy = the moby grape of the noughties? hope it works out better for roisin than it did for t'grape

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

I hear a rumor that there is an Ashley Beedle remix of Roisin Murphy's "If we're in love." Want. Waaaant.

brittle-lemon, Friday, 8 July 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

"sow into you" is really great. but the record just doesn't really move me much.

two weeks pass...
"If We're In Love" has been pulled as a CD release, now it is 12" and download only (next week) (25/7). So no topquality b-side, or video. This is infuriating.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Gaaah. Apparently CD singles -- with mixes by Dani Siliciano and Herbert, and a new track "Ripples" -- were pressed and can be found in certain European countries and online shops. But "infuriating" is right.

(And then there is also that Ashley Beedle remix that's been played on Radio 1...)

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

the video is out there...try antville

manuel (manuel), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

the video is FANTASTIC:
boardsmag.com/screeningroom/musicvideos/1814/

"if we're in love" is a top ten single for me, i think.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

why would they pull the cd single release if they are pressed, and they made a video???
And this video is great BTW. Love Roisin's dance move around the end!

Arnault (arc73hk), Saturday, 23 July 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

oh and i heard the herbert and d. siciliano mixes... They are nice but that song deserves a massive remix (Alan Braxe i think would do great)

Arnault (arc73hk), Saturday, 23 July 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Apparently, Róisín has rejected three different Ashley Beedle remixes and the whole project is now off the table. I would love to hear it anyway. Maybe Boris Dlugosch can repeat the magic?

and if you need something just say

Frederico Gameiro, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

i really like this album now, isnt this what jamie lidell wanted to do? make an out there soul/funk record?

but this one works and is pushing forward, "if we are in love" is a perfect fusion of herberts big band tiresomeness married to actual fun funky production and, well i think roisins voice is awesome.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

'if we're in love' as the first single? come on! i admit i've never understood why artists lead in with the second most-catchy song when promoting an album, but "sow into you" could have taken US charts by storm. "if we're in love" will never cross over, sadly.

t. rex laughlin, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I agree - something like "Sow Into You" would have been a far better choice for a lead single, but I still think "If We're In Love" is a work of genuis (as is a good 90% of the album). Would someone mind posting that Lazlo mix again please???

Tyrilzla, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 06:35 (twenty years ago)

"Sow Into You" is maybe a bit subtle? Still, a good remix for the single and who knows...

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

I doubt that anything by Roisin would "take the US charts by storm." That caveat aside, I think "If we're in love" is by far the catchiest -- because in some ways more "conventional" -- than "Sow into you." The only other track that I would consider is "Dear diary," especially if edited down to a manageable length and punchier version.

Is it still the practice that artists often release the second catchiest single as the lead off track, and then the catchiest as the 2nd single?

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

'If We're In Love' is catchy I suppose, but it's one of the weakest tracks on the album - it just lacks the oomph of 'Sow Into You', 'Ramalama (Bang Bang)' and the title track.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

argh i hate that ramalama tune! thats the only one i dont like. i love "if were in love", and i love her dancing! 1 love roisin!!!!!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

her dancing is amazing.

so is her style. the diaphanous gold mini-dress she wore at sónar - beautiful.

'ramalama' STOMPS!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

I have the two offical mixes from the single if anyone's keen... And I believe there is an Ashley Beedle mix floating around. Let me know if anyone has MP3s of the unoffical mixes that they wouldn't mind sharing...

Tyrilzla, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Keen as beans. I'm also curious to hear "Ripples," the b-side that seems to be lost what with the withdrawal of the single.

Here's the Lazlo mix of "If We're In Love," with thanks to the original poster: http://s23.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2L4FYIFU4SSPB02HPEEMETW031

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

i wish i had seen her at sonar :( didnt bother because....i dont know.

heres a question not related to the album, but to her n herbert.

i listened to herberts tresor mix the othr day and its got a tiny bit of "herberts tasteful dub" of molokos "sing it back" on it, and it sounds awesome, but juno list it only appearing on a dobule pack of remixes of the tune. does anyone know if it came out on a normal 12"? i really want to get it, but dont want the dlugosh mix or the somebody or other mix.

in fact, based on that clip i would say for me

herberts tasteful dub > sow into you > molobert

for the perfect fusion of herberts house and roisins voice

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

That Herbert mix of "Sing It Back" is tremendous - I have it on an American pressing of the single - will rip and post if I can remember to bring it to work...

Thanks, uploaders! You are all felons but good ones.

The video, btw, can be downloaded here: http://www.simonhenwood.com/news.aspx. It of course features a decapitated Roisin, her dancing with sliced bagels, and a spirit rape. (Possibly.)

The same link has the single artwork. I find the painting a little creepy, but there you go.

ah i found email

2007 sees the return of one of music’s most intriguing talents – Róisín Murphy, the distinctive voice of dance-pop duo Moloko. Her forthcoming solo album is a heady mix of electronic dance anthems, soul-stirring pop songs, deep, dark funk and quirky lyrical genius.

Conceived by Róisín as a thrilling and contemporary marriage of edgy pop and irresistible disco, she co-wrote and co-produced the entire album, bringing her own vision and focus to these songs whilst working with a variety of producers, writers and mixers to create what is without doubt her finest record; unpredictable, creative, inventive, exciting and hugely accessible.

Róisín has always combined the attitude of Kim Deal with the roar of Grace Jones but this time around she adds the nuance of Kate Bush, the strength of Annie Lennox and the soulfulness of Dusty Springfield into the mix. This is one of the albums of the year – a breathtaking modern classic.

The first single to be taken from the album is ‘Overpowered’ which is released on July 2nd on EMI Records. It’s an insistent, electronic gem and a powerful introduction to the new sound of Róisín Murphy. Written by Róisín and Seiji of Bugz In The Attic and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Amy Winehouse, Røyksöpp, Grace Jones), the single is accompanied by a series of brilliant remixes from the likes of Seamus Haji, Kris Menace, Hervé and Loose Cannons.

The video to ‘Overpowered’ will be unveiled soon along with the dramatic series of artwork images that will follow throughout the year. Exciting live plans are currently being put together which will further showcase the creative concept of the album.

Róisín Murphy has been reborn. Get ready for the next great pop revolution!

Release dates:

‘Overpowered’ is released on July 2nd

The next single will be released in October, upfront of Róisín Murphy’s album.
