Não Wave – Brazilian Post Punk 1982-1988

A strange object surprised music fans in Brazil in 1982. An independent 7“ single, with an obscure cover in black and white where the band name could be read: Agentss. Here were 2 tracks impressively synchronised with the electronic music that was happening at that time in Europe and the USA, from Gary Numan and Fad Gadget to Gang Of Four, ESG, New Order and Liquid Liquid.

It was the first manifestation of a phenomenon that developed during the whole of the 1980's: Brazilian bands working from the same post-punk references as scenes occurring in London, New York and Berlin. In the following years dozens of releases revealed an invigorating and vigorous generation of bands. From 1982 to the end of the 80s bands like Ira!, Smack, Mercenárias, Muzak, Voluntários da Pátria, Chance, Vzyadoq Moe, Akira S & as Garotas Que Erraram were some of these names - all of these coming from the city of São Paulo.

With today´s groups like Bloc Party, LCD Sound System, The Rapture, Whomadewho, Radio 4 and other contemporary punk/dance bands taking their influences from the early eigthies, the music of the groups included on Não Wave (all of whom have remained unknown outside of Brazil until now) will be a surprising revelation.

The tracks that Andy Cumming, Alex Antunes and Miguel Barella compiled in this collection give an idea of what was the Brazilian "Não Wave". An idea that is perhaps incomplete, because what was documented in the studios was often less explosive than the live experience - but still intriguing none-theless to see how current some of these tracks sound.

just going through my second listen of it, so im not sure what to make except that my initial response is, "awesome!"

has anyone else checked it out? thoughts?

also, it seems that soul jazz is releasing its own brazilian post-punk compilation soon.

I believe I'm getting a copy of this -- I'm well looking forward to it. :-)

from soul jazz:

Our next major album coming up is The Sexual Life of the Savages – Underground Post-Punk from Brazil. Strange name, wicked music! Featuring a score of bands who made music heavily influenced by the likes of ESG, Liquid Liquid, Pop Group, A Certain Ratio, Joy Division, Caberet Voltaire, Gang of Four etc. Redefining Brazilian music this album is a revelation – bands with names such as As Mercenarias, Gang 90, Fellini, Akira, Smack, Cabine C. None of them are known outside of Brasil. This abum will be available from Apr 4, 2005. We have a few sampler 7" singles available (featuring As Mercenarias and Fellini) – otherwise make a date in your diary.

I knew of the Soul Jazz compilation already, though...but still, it's an imperative that I acquire them.

I've got it. The Black Future song blows my mind.

The Fellini track on that Soul Jazz split 7" is killer.

This sounds fascinating. A few of my favourite post-punk bands introduced a distinctly Brasilian flair to the milieu--like Antena and arguably ACR--but I've never heard any post-punk *from* Brasil. How does this stuff compare?

I really like what I've heard so far. I will need to order this! Yes!

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 7 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i really want to hear this! i want to hear both of them, actually. i hope there's not that much overlap!

You can also get it from forcedexposure.com. I second n/a: Black Future is awesome (drawling authoritah like prime Dylan, but not so scrawny--no idea what he/they saying, but just gets better and better). Other faves so far: Agentss, Chance (the only samba, but it's like Robert Wyatt's production of a young and restless chantoozie), Ira! (the only ones still together; recently did an MTV [Brazil]Unplugged, but here they make the[electric and well-assimilated]punk-reggae connection as well as any UK I've heard {Man Recordings thinks they sound like Gang of Four...) AKT (all-female supergroup, with members from other all-female combos, including Mercenarias, also great on here). Not that it isn't all good (to varying degrees); the website and liner notes really try to say who combines bits of what (UK/US/German), but really this all seems to have (enough of)its own thing, unlike so much neo wave today (although if you ODd on A Certain Ratio etc back in the day, this might not revive your enthusiasm, I guess)I'll get the Soul Jazz too.

I'm looking forward to both of these - I hope dusty groove get some copies back in stock.

etc, Sunday, 8 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to hear both of them, actually. i hope there's not that much overlap!

According to the Forced Exposure write-up, 3 tracks appear on both, which I think is a pretty small number considering the topic at hand.

eleven months pass...
The As Mercenarias CD on Soul Jazz is fantastic! I haven't listened to the Sexual Life Of The Savages yet but now I'm looking forward to it.
