Guitar solo intro to Van Halen's "You Really Got Me"

There's no way this warrants a whole thread and there's a slim chance anyone will bother, but I still have to ask if the solo adds or detracts from the song. So does it?

It just sounds like a bit of wank, but when the main riff of the song kicks in, it's like a thousand Christmas presents opening up on your birthday filled with squirtgun-wielding topless playmates covered in chocolate sauce waiting to play endless rounds of slippery Twister with you.

And it's called "Eruption," by the way.

totally awesome tune. i think it's safe to say an Eddie V guitar solo can improve ANY song. maybe not so much for Van Hagar but that's a different story. i won't swim in that shit. i listened to the superb VH cover of "pretty woman" yesterday: now there's a cool fucking intro. it starts all super ominous, minor-key synth bass, creepy yelpy guitar stabs, it fucking sounds like the Pop Group or something.. so it goes all nut like that for awhile ..and then BLAMMO!! it rips into the main part, all upbeat. total fucking curveball right there. i did NOY see that one coming.

Eruption is a super good call. VH makes me feel like $1,000,000.

For some reason I really like the last half of "Eruption" (haha, referring to "half" of a 102-second instrumental) where Eddie does those weird harmonic chords that sound like total rocketship takeoff sequence shit. For some even harder to explain reason I think Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" is better than the Kinks'.

I thought this was just about the four bar guitar intro to You Really Got Me, which is great because it fucks you up if you hear the first note as on the '1'.

There's a Kinks live album from the 80s where Dave Davies does a hilarious impression of 'Eruption' - into-ing You Really Got Me, of course.
