Maura Mae gets judged. Now you get to judge the judges, etc. etc.

Sterl, you are too easily smitten.

First of all a big thankyou to Maura Mae for sending the picture in and not screaming at me to have it taken off when she saw it had gone up.

Secondly the results. I don't know. Only one her-boyfriend-is-cooler answer this time (that made it to print) but there's still something about the results when a woman's being judged that there isn't when a man is. I may well be being oversensitive to the whole issue - it may well be that this is endemic to society or encoded into how we react to the opposite sex. It may well be that I'm overanalysing the whole thing.

Editorial clarification: I'm trying as editor not to make any assumptions myself. Why didn't you cut Brent's post, I was asked. Because for me the assumption that Maura Mae - or other people - would be offended by fisting references was an assumption too far, and would have been worse for being hidden. Then the asker pointed out it could be seen as a lesbianism thing, which I hadn't taken it as at all. And if I had seen it as that I'd probably have cut it as being a stereotype. But then wouldn't *I* have been the one endorsing the connections? And so on and so forth.

My favourite post was #11.

i would like to officially call the token 'tommy' joke for next week's entry.

ethan padgett, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

wow! how fun!! it is amazing how right some folks were... the fisting thing doesn't bother me. i am not offended or anything, cause well. it isn't true and rather i found brent's .... funny.

but um, boys if you wanna ask me out... you can.. cause the boyfriend doesn't exist! (ohh! la la!) anyhow.

the things about sophomore, used to be goth, and i never really liked what my ex boyfriend liked and vice versa although over time it grew on each of us. right on. no cardigans, although i did love that song at one point in time... but that was before i was cool.

and whats up with all the hello kitty?? i was more into kerroppi!!

oh, and sterl: your final comments are so right on.

(ps. oh boys... i am near boston!)

OH! and thanks Tom! you truly made my spring break, as i am strutting all around ct and western ma thinking I am the shit!

The name thing is cool, because a couple of people who I thought had a modicum of cool have outed themselves as complete and utter chuckleheads.

Nicole, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I still think she's Jill.

Ally, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Tom didn't put a name on #17! I bet it was him and he's just covering his tracks!

The names are cool though I only recognize like two of them.

Ian White, Tuesday, 13 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The name of the #17 guy was....Kurt! Uh, yeah, that's it....Kurt!

It was the angular haircut, I tell you. It totally threw me (and yes, JM, angular haircuts are to blame for that part too)-- and I was so sure about the art school thing. I think that if it had been more than a headshot, I would have had better luck. On the other hand, she does like bands that I've never heard of. Melissa Ferrick? Sonia Dada? The names are vaguely familiar, but I doubt I've heard anything. Barthes, I'm happy to say, will indeed end up on the tip of Maura Mae's tongue, at least if she continues with her intended Womens Studies major. So, art critic, maybe, I suppose.

I tried scrupulously to avoid the usual pantheon -- tori, ani, bjork, etc. not to avoid stereotyping, but just to keep things interesting. Turns out Maura likes all of the above. Joke's on me. But the real shocker -- David Grey. A chancer like him would get shot down in a Classic or Dud thread in a thin second.

But WHY KURT? WHY?!!

alex thomson, Wednesday, 14 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

What happened to my bit?...I wasnt that insulting, I just said she had a stupid haircut.

Michael - can't find the reply. Either it went to a weird address and I never got it, or I deleted it by mistake while trying to filter spam. Many apologies.
