Lunachicks

They rule, why no thread? I've often thought about starting a male Lunachicks coverband called Lunachucks. We'd all have the first name Chuck and assume the last names of the band members.

anyway, I'm listening to Pretty Ugly right now.

Yeah, they're fantastic live too. I saw them headline at the Bowery Ballroom a few years back, and the (then) 16 year old Donnas opened up. Bad booking decision by the Donna's manager, because the Lunachicks CRUSHED them (unsuprisingly).

I also have an inexplicable crush on Squid, the bass player. She's my punk rock Tiger Beat moment above all others...

Great, great band. Only seen them once, but my memory of their drummer coming down to sing "Super Strong" at the front of the stage was sheer badassery. Gear's cover band prospect sounds most worthy.

"JAN BRADY HAS RETURNED!"

I had a hapless crush on their bass player, Syd, in the summer of `89 (before she transformed herself willingly into a tattooed troglodyte). I played the fuck out of Babysitters on Acid, but never really cared for their other stuff as much. Was once tossed out of their guitarist's (the one who isn't Cindy) apartment on 1st Avenue for snorting coke off of someone's dresser drawer with my speed freak friend Wayne (not Hussey) who looked like David Hemmings in "Blow Up".

Saw GG Allin's old drummer, Dino, beaten to a pulp by a buch of skinheads when they opened for the Rollins Band at the Marquee in `90. He'd been beating off in front of the band while they played. The `Chicks bought the skins a round of beers for their services.

*boggles* Now that is a story.

I had a hapless crush on their bass player, Syd,
I always thought her name was Squid.

Oh yeah, and so did John Justen upthread.

I guessing real name Syd? Yowza, though...

Syd = Squid. And the 'chicks are my favorite live band in the history of ever -- some of the nicest, sweetest people I've ever met, too. They wrote fantastic punk music and had the best sense of humor AND were unapologetically feminist to the bone. And damn, can they play. I saw them perform at the Women's March for Life benefit in D.C. last year and it was so moving and rocktastic that I ... cried. But like, in a hardcore way. The crowd was gushing. Goddamn, I miss them so much. BUT Check Gina's new band Bantam: BANTAMNYC.COM and Theo's new band: ILOVETHEO.COM.

This thread is making me think of other Lower East Side bands- Hammerbrain, and the long-forgotten Bad Tuna Experience.

fourteen years pass...

I've been putting together a playlist of female punk and a couple tracks from Luxury Problems were suggested, to my dismay because the album cover is an artifact of that awful late '90s/early '00s look, but then the music (obviously) slays. Looking at the covers of the discogs though and it's kind of yeesh all around.
