i just heard a version (maybe the original) of said iris dement song on wfmu. its reminded me how much i loved a live version by 10,000 manics at the end of my high school years despite sonic youth being my favorite band.

so now the 2 part question:

1. what can you tell me about said song or its composer

and more fun (cause i know how to use google)..

2. what modern versions of old folk (or standards) songs sucked you back into stuff from before yr time or a genre you never expected to listen to.

1. "Our Town" is actually the best song on DeMent's first album. Check out her second, 'My Life.'

I love the Maniacs version! It's one of the few Maniacs songs I can hear these days without puking. And isn't David Byrne wonderful on it too?

"My Life" was shortlisted on many 1994 top-1o lists. It's always been on my list of albums to buy.
