just remembered this track I used to have on an old tape of Tim Westwood's show on Capital Radio back in 1990 or thereabouts. i'm pretty sure it's called 'High Noon' as i know the 'chorus' features that phrase more than once. i can't recognise the MC based on memory alone though but definitely American. the only other things i remember is that it starts with industrial 'whistley' noises over the beat and there's a heavy orchestral sound throughout, not a million miles away from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's 'Catch A Bad One' but much more dramatic.

any ideas? couldn't find any hip-hop tracks from that time by the name of 'High Noon' via google.

Kool Moe Dee "Wild Wild West"?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds like it could well be that, now to track it down...

tho looking at the lyrics i don't think that is it.

Wasn't the "Wild Wild West" from 1990 tho?? I thought that was a bit earlier.. No matter.. if ya gots a lead, ya gots a lead.

when you say "industrial 'whistley' noises", what type of whistles? Human whistling? Or train whistling?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Rascalz "High Noon"?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(Which would make then NORTH American, as they're from Vancouver...)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind.. that's from 1999.

what type of whistles? Human whistling? Or train whistling?

more like factory steam whistles. the Rascalz one is too recent alas (xpost).

"Hang Em' High" by Ice Cube's buddy KAM?

Neil Kulkarni, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Which came out in 93 I reckon. Duh. Sorry.

It's not "Wild Wild West" - that has no orchestral sound to it at all. A few years later there's Jeru the Damaja's "Black Cowboys" that kinda sorta fits the bill - it's got a bullet ricochet sample in the beat. Not "Wild Cowboys" by Sadat X, I think, or "Cowboys" by Fugees and Outsidaz. Hmmmm....

Man, you could do a pretty good mix disc of Oater-themed rap songs now that I think about it.

Lemme know if you figure it out - sounds pretty great.

The "high noon" bit wasn't a DJ scratched GZA line by any chance?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't have the Shadow Preemptive Strike release, so I can't tell you what he's doing there, but there are a couple of tracks called "High Noon" on that, so perhaps "High Noon" is just one of those slightly-obscure sample/scratch points amongst a lot of downtempo/hip-hop artists? and perhaps this track just happens to be the source of it?

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess what I'm saying is: if there's a website out there dedicated to trainspotting all of DJ Shadow's samples (and I wouldn't be surprised if there was), maybe there's a sample list for "High Noon" (parts 1 or 2) and you can dig from there...

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That Shadow track is from WAY WAY later than 1990.

Too early for GZA no? Although funnily enough the production of the track was quite proto Wu-Tang.

the DJ Shadow 'High Noon' is nothing like the one I'm thinking of, as in no direct sample or anything.

I fear I will never know what it was because it's possible that the lyrics were a freestyle over a different track or something.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the Shadow track is way later than 1990, but I was hypothesizing that maybe something he *sampled* was the thing $V£N! is tracking down, given the name of the song and everything, but $V£N! knows the song, and I don't, and he dismissed the possibility.. so scratch that.

$V£N!.. you wanna YSI a digitized portion of it?

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)
