OMG WTF LCD & MIA w/ DIPLO this WEDNESDAY EEEEEEEEEE!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(and my fucking curse. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are playing this week here too. Which night? Yes, this wednesday. FUUUUUUUUUUCK! At least Melt Banana knew better to play the day after, and the Books the day after that.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.summerloversunlimited.com/fly.gif

You get sloppy seconds biatch! ;)

LeCoq (LeCoq), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we get an afterparty, donut?

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

im so bummed -- they're not playing together in philly.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking forward to Sunday...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sleepytime gorilla museum are grating as hell after about 10 minutes live. go see MIA instead.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are, they're not getting between me and LCD Soundsystem.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

How can they NOT play NYC? That's madness.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD is playing NYC 6/10 with The Juan Maclean

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and M.I.A. is at S.O.B.'s on june 7 and 8.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going next Thursday (the 19th). Diplo is spinning at the afterparty.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - though i'm actually thinking about selling my M.I.A. tix. aside from no "bingo" on the setlist, i kinda got my fill with the knitting factory show and i can't see the S.O.B.'s show being too different. i dunno.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

can you sell it to me? :-p

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps - a friend of mine already called dibs, but she is flaky. i prolly won't decide till near the show though. i can see myself getting more excited about it between now and then.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post and off-topic)

Check the books live, yo! People were enraptured last night at the Empty Bottle - it was a damn nice show.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I wasn't going to forgo LCD/MIA for Sleepytime... the latter are west coast and have a better chance of coming back sooner than the former. But I've been trying to see Sleepytime for over a year, and there's always a conflict.

Again, I have Melt Banana the day after.. so I can get my herkyjerky loud punchy quirky hardcore/metal/punk type rock fix, except in yelps instead of Grinch belches.

LeCoq is going to slime this tour before I get a chance to enjoy it clean and dry. The shame!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and I have friends that are going to force me to see The Books on Friday too. I'm gonna die from lack of sleep. Oh well.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday in SF. who up in dis is going?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

600pm doors in Boston. show starts at 630.
$4.50 convienience charge.

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

>SIGH

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

David, they just want to make things convenient for you. How can you cry?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, in the case of the SF show--and the fact that Adult. are playing across town that night--i'd be willing to pay the bands an extra $4.50 to go on at 6:30... ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, ADULT. are fun live, but I'm guessing nowhere near the league of this double line-up. (Adam the bass player looked really bored the last time I saw ADULT. open for Broadcast.. but maybe he always looks bored.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

la show is sold out :(

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

uh-oh. that means i am getting chicago tickets after work today, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Jergins, are you suggesting we make an afterparty? Sadly I have to work the next day... but who knows.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going next Thursday.

Look, I read ILM!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, ADULT. are fun live, but I'm guessing nowhere near the league of this double line-up. (Adam the bass player looked really bored the last time I saw ADULT. open for Broadcast.. but maybe he always looks bored.)

-- donut debonair (do...), May 10th, 2005.

hahaha... well, Adam's a friend so i kinda gotta go, but i think they're playing late so it's gonna be quite a triple-header for me that night ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the lcd/mia tickets are sold out in chi-town too. they had five tickets left on saturday when some friends picked theirs up.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

whos goin to the la show? can somebody help me out?

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A.'s doing an in-store at the teeny Sonic Boom in Ballard. That's gonna be a madhouse.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Noooooo. Why am I an idiot?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, I just checked Ticketmaster and you're right. Goddammit.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, you can follow the advice of Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kott, who were on Chicago Tonight with Bob Sirat last night, and show up at the box office right before the show and hope to get media/friend/VIP tickets that are released at the last minute when those people don't show up.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, she's also doing an instore at Amoeba in SF on saturday. (not sure if this is already posted somewhere)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pumped for this show. I took the next day off work so I can stay out superlate. Yeah.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the Books reminder, I want to go to that. Not so hot on Mia Doi Todd, tho.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not going because I object to her politics and art school origins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

JUST KIDDING!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

YA YA HEY!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A.'s doing an in-store at the teeny Sonic Boom in Ballard. That's gonna be a madhouse.

Yup, and earlier on Thursday, she's playing live on KEXP. Poor poor girl. Someone get her a fan and some Evian, girlfriend! (I won't be able to hear or see either, as I'll be a working donut)

Thanks for the Books reminder, I want to go to that. Not so hot on Mia Doi Todd, tho.

My friend has basically threatened me to go see The Books, so I have no choice. I've heard of but never heard Mia Doi Todd.

I'm on the fence about Melt Banana now. :/

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, that's an interesting idea, nick. i just posted a ticket wanted ad on craigslist.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

both her nyc shows are sold out, aren't they.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be there this saturday.

one time gaffled 'em up, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

just back from seeing the vancouver date and i have only two words for ya donut......ear protection!!!!

william (william), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

diplo will be at viceroy tmmw nite. since viceroy closes at 2 he must be heading over after they're done opening. i

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

william, how was the vancouver show? how long was MIA's set?

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Agree with william, it was LOUD. Glad I had my ear protection. MIA's set was great, she went like 45mins straight, lots of energy, lots of shitty dancing (which I really like, kinda like how I like bad photos). The crowd was super into her, even bringing her back for an encore (Hombre). I haven't seen that much dancing at a Vancouver show before. Usually everyone stands around.

I even got to meet M.I.A. a couple hours before the show wondering around Futureshop. She was nice, I was gushing, cause I've had a huge crush on her forever. But still, it went kinda like this: http://www.azizisbored.com/2005_02_20_azizisbored_archive.html#110935968591468841

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, do LCD Soundsystem cover My Bloody Valentine as well as Siouxsie? :)

I'll make sure to grab bar napkins for the ears at the very least.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, the DFA website is still listing that LCDSS are playing at St. Andrew's Hall, and not the Majestic (in Deeeetroit)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

donut, did you have similar probs in seattle?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, never mind.. just figured out what you were saying, donut..haha. anyhow, yeah, MIA was a bit sloppy, sounded really outta tune with the record diplo was playing AND with the hype girl. i mean, granted i'd be completely self-conscious if my first song featured me spelling my name out ("K-K-E-E-N-N/K-E-N") over and over but she just seemed a bit awkward up there (and i'm not just talking about the julia louis-dreyfus styled dancing)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mind the act itself.. It just seemed to me there wasn't enough practice involved, that's all. Again, this is another highly unfair comparison, but I saw Dizzee Rascal live a month before, and he had a very similar set up live... and Dizzee was just eons more vibrant, radiant, and slammin' than M.I.A. -- and I think M.I.A. could have gotten away with a lot more than Dizzee could have, given that the strength -- IMHO -- in Arular was M.I.A.'s rhythmic backdrops, as opposed to rhymin', so M.I.A. could have winged it a little more as far as stage performance goes. But yet STILL, it just seemed M.I.A. didn't care that much, and it showed.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

in her defense, i'll also add that she's probably fucking exhausted from all the promotion she's had to do on this tour. i think in just a weekend she played three shows in SF alone. i mean, fuck, even Alan Sparhawk is hypin' her! ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, same in Seattle, if you count a radio performance. I'll grant that.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll just blame Diplo...haha. (Never have I seen a more bored looking DJ in my life, though, seriously)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Montreal show is this upcoming weekend. The new Zoobizarre space will host the after-party, with Rory Phillips from Trash Club in the UK DJing... Any Montrealers?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never come so close to getting in a fight with assholes in the audience as I did at the El Rey last night. At one point I had to shove this guy away from my friend when he wouldn't stop launching himself into her space. I know indie fux who want to make themselves the focus of the show exist everywhere, but I've never hated them nearly so badly anywhere as I do in LA - everyone just thinks they're such a fucking superstar in waiting. Horrendous vibe-killing bullshit, sez I.

MIA was OK. The beats were coming across all muffled at first, but I might have just been too close to the stage (although I don't remember that being a problem at the Knitting Factory show). Her encore was URAQT and the PFT version of Bingo (!), so that was pretty great.

LCD was fucking great. There was no way they were going to top their show at the Echo, which is pretty much my favorite show I've ever been to, but once they got going last night (I personally thought On Repeat didn't work so well live, but everything after Daft Punk Is Playing At My House was pretty much golden) it just all clicked. JM was so smashed off the bottle of peppermint Schnapps he brought onstage that he kept fucking up the words to Losing My Edge (although to be fair, I'm not sure if it's possible to do that song justice live). Yeah/Throw was one of the absolute best performances of a song I've ever seen live in my entire life, although I will admit that in no way did I recognize Throw until I read this thread. The encore of Jump Into The Fire was fucking batshit awesome, but unfortunately I was too exhausted from like two and a half straight hours of dancing to adequately lose my shit. GREAT climax to a set. GREAT GREAT GREAT.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Echo show sounded great, but I will admit to getting bored after awhile. Diplo and MIA were no-shows at the Standard party yesterday - although her backup vocalist was there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ended up needing to just relax for the evening, was still fighting the cold. Alas! Good to hear LCD did their thang well, drunkenness aside.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

question:

How can a DJ/MC ever have bad sound???? I mean, even with little or no soundcheck, there's little or no excuse!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

MANY ways.

Sometimes, it's the venue soundpeoples' fault.

Sometimes, it's the DJ's fault for not recognizing the idea of volume level compromise.

Sometimes, the MC has no concept of mouth-to-mike distance, how to deal with monitor proximity, etc.

Need I go on?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Like I said, there's no excuse.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you the dictator of live shows, peepee?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no excuse for anything that isn't anything less than perfect -- assuming that all humans are perfectly functioning animals. But, we're not. Sorry to be the buzzkilla, this time.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(Personally, I wouldn't mind being THE DANCE COMMANDER! I'm working on my campaign right now.)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget your official Dick Valentine Tighty Whities

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ken, us amoeba folks had to seriously jock just to get our comps -- and MIA had just done the instore earlier *that day*. luckily for us, the guy at the box office is a regular customer and went up the chain of command to fix the problem. but still, i feel yer pain.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

JAY HELP ME GET INTO THIS SHOW I FUCKED UP BAD

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't think I knew what song Jump Into The Fire was until I checked it out yesterday. Though I knew it predated him, I always thought that the vocals on the original sounded EXACTLY like Joe Jackson.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA was *FANTASTIC* at the Echo last night, much more exciting than the LCD show a couple months back. Without a doubt, she gets my vote for entertainer-of-the-year. My friend remarked that she seemed "very honest". Diplo's set was excellent too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I GOT A TICKET FOR TOMORROW, WHEEE!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

natedey is lost, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also posted on the Chicago ILX thread... Is anyone still looking for a ticket for Chicago tonight? Unfortunately I can't go and I'd prefer if I didn't have to eat the ticket cost. We'd have to deal by Paypal/ticket e-mail attachment since I live in Milwaukee. Let me know ASAP if interested.

Shane (Shane), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"usually tall," haha. if i see someone that matches this description, i may say hi. we'll have to navigate through the million sweating hipsters, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, if I'd known there were going to be all these people offering me tickets at the last minute, I'd have talked the guy I bought from down from $40.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else see the Detroit show last night? MIA sounded great, and I danced like a damn (drunken) fool, but I had a bit of a hard time getting past the karaokeness of her arrangement. I did like the Neneh Cherry lookalike she had flanking her, though. One thing is for certain: She is fucking hot.

LCD Soundsystem blew me away. I expected them to be good, but they were pure aces! No surprises, now that the cover of "Slowdive" is an integral part of their set, but there was one cover - the closing number - that I didn't recognize (anyone?). "Tribulations" was definitely the highlight of the set.

An aside: What's up with the indie kids barely nodding their pomaded coifs at this most dancingest of shows? Fucking move people!! That's what music like this was meant to do to you.

The afterparty w/ Diplo & Ghostly DJs at Oslo must have been pleasurable as well, though my memory of the evening gets a little hazy at that point.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 21 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

re: MIALCDetroit

MIA was way better than I expected, though she started way late (rushed to shovel down my food at the Majestic Cafe, didn't even have coffee, only to wait for what seemed an hour for her to begin). The BushBlair thang at the beginning was hilarious. She seemed more comfortable on stage than probably early on the tour. (I can see why, though, she wouldn't go over too well at an instore)I was pleasantly surprised at the energetic crowd response. (as for the karaokeness of her set, ain't that the nature of the MC/DJ setup?)

LCD were great as well, though too loud for my old ears (why do we forget our earplugs? they're still ringing loudly now). The drummer awed me! I love having the drummer set up like that, especially if they are great. The highlight for me was the encore, which, musically, was IFeelLove, but lyrically not.
One thing is for certain: Nancy's HOTTT!

(another thing's for certain: I can't wait til we pull a California, and ban smoking from gigs!)

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"As for the karaokeness of her set, ain't that the nature of the MC/DJ setup?" - Yes, I suppose it is. I guess I just haven't been to a lot of hip-hop shows. Didn't mean to knock it, though - I dug me some MIA.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the last song for lcd in chicago was "throw" (the carl craig cover) so maybe that's what they played last in the d. it'd be a fitting ending that's for sure.

the bush/blair thing was great i agree. laughter was a nice way to start off the night.

first time i've seen an opening band brought back out for an encore in a long time.

one of my favorite parts was m.i.a. giving her hype girl a hard time about smoking too much pot. ("we're on tour i can't help it!!")

oh yeah, and the music was good, too. heh. highlights of lcd: "daft punk", "movement", "tribulations" (ace ace ace), "throw", "on repeat"...i can't remember the whole setlist because of the tequila! band sounded tight and excellent. and murphy as sheila e. is a must-see.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

how could i forget "yeah"?!! omg it was insane, so much more intense than on record. oh, "beat connection" was what they opened with and that was great as well. yay!!

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Montreal

Owing to my girlfriend and I having our anniversary dinner at an understaffed Indian restaurant we got there a bit late, missed MIA's set and caught most of LCD Soundsystem's. Tight, good sound, a lot of people, massive disco ball.

1. Beat Connection
2. On Repeat
3. Give It Up
4. Daft Punk
5. Tribulations
6. Movement
7. Losing My Edge
8. Slow Dive
9. Yeah
------------ (I assume on the set list this indicates wait for a couple of minutes to come back for the encore)
10. Jump Into the Fire

That's the setlist, but I recall that the first encore was a song I wasn't familiar with, possibly this Paperclip People "Throw" song or what not, and then they left, and came back for a second encore with the Nilsson cover.

After the show, Murphy said Seattle and Montreal had been the best dates on the tour, complained about his heartburn and then expressed a desire to get some poutine.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Monday, 23 May 2005 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the first encore was the carl craig song!

i missed the 2nd encore though :(

still, awesome!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my favorite parts was m.i.a. giving her hype girl a hard time about smoking too much pot. ("we're on tour i can't help it!!")

I totally missed this! I couldn't hear her that well, apparently.

After the show, Murphy said Seattle and Montreal had been the best dates on the tour, complained about his heartburn and then expressed a desire to get some poutine.

:)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you'd think the poutine and the heartburn would've been in the opposite order!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure the Montreal setlist is identical to the Toronto show. I was really impressed with LCD Soundsystem. Murphy et al. certainly exceeded expectations. I'm actually hoping for a live album or DVD.
