So if a certain someone wanted to do a Redux of the Urgh concept in 2005/2006, which artists might they contact to perform in said thing? Feel free to define the concept as you wish...

I only wish that the music scene were anywhere near as creative or cohesive as it was when 'Urgh!' was released. From The Police to Devo to The Go-Gos to The Cramps to XTC to Gary Numan, no two bands on that soundtrack sound alike, yet there was a small, ardent support group of fans following almost every band in this "new wave" of music from show to show. I sound like a jaded old crank when I reminisce about the days when I could inexpensively see tours by X, The Fleshtones and Gang of Four (sometimes all three in one week), but those days truly will never be recreated. The costs have risen, the factions have splintered and various other entertainment has taken the place of live music (including staying home and watching the plasma TV) so that probably no one person will be seeing (to name three acts coming to my town this week) The Raveonettes, Bright Eyes *and* Thievery Corporation. 'Urgh!' to me represented an overview of a scene, the likes of which just doesn't exist anymore.

Plus, tickets are more expensive.

Well, that's what I was thinking... But I wondered if there was a way to put together a virtual battle of the bands with good DIY bands, without resorting to the dinosaurs of indie as a lineup.

Not as a direct response to Matt's post (thanks, Matt) the bands do not have to be indie nor rawk.

oops sorry I guess I thought you wanted something that would be equivalent to that film today.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No no - don't misunderstand - I think your suggestions are great. I didn't mean that they weren't. I just meant that I didn't want other people to limit their suggestions to that...

wasn't urgh! curated by stewart copeland? and the police headlined. they were stadium-filling intl. superstars. who today would fill that roll and curate such a thing?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart Copeland.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry. Um, I dunno. Who's a stadium filling band today who has a drummer that every fan of the band can name?

Meg White?

Steve Drozd?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sigh. All from bands that could have easily played the original Urrgh.

How about...

BRIAN CHIPPENDALE!!????!!

A good percentage of the bands on 'Urgh!' were signed to IRS. Maybe just get a fairly well-known, fairly commercial indie (Matador?) to populate the film/soundtrack with its acts, and then fill in the blanks with ringers from other labels.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Drumming has become less of a spotlight position these days. In fact, all positions except frontman have become less of a spotlight position.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless you're Yo La Tengo, which relies heavily on drumming. So Matador + drummer = Georgia Hubley to curate.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, now I'm turned off to the idea.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo La Guerra Musica

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

At least Chris Knox/Tall Dwarfs and Refrigerator would play it.. that would make it worth it alone..(although I would come just for those two bands.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But see, it would be worldwide concerts with three bands at each. Otherwise, it's just lochellapalUSa.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone have a copy of the Spin Record Guide with Georgia's top 10 handy? I recall her list being pretty good at the time (I'm sure Tall Dwarfs were on it.)
