Geldof Says Live Aid 2005 Isn't Happening.. But If It Did

Ok ILM- let's do it. Recent news stories hinted at Bob Geldof doing a 20 year anniversary "Live Aid" concert to fund new causes.

Let's say it's going to take place this September and the same as last time- in the UK at Wembley and the US (this time in Washington DC)

20 minute sets per artist, then 20 for breakdown at which time the other city goes live. Starts at Noon UK Time- ends at 11pm US Time.

Let's write this thing up.

Few reminders:

Remember to include the obvious few acts that would "reunite" for this one time event. (i.e. Led Zep in 1985)

It should include many cultures and young and older acts all coming together in the name of $... I mean love, unity and cause.

In keeping in line with current times, there would likely be a lot more package sets (ex. 12 Bad Boy Acts on stage at once)

One artist will have to do something very self-absorbed to bring attention to themselves (remember Phil Collins in 85)

Make time for the speeches from celebrities who act like they are every bit an everyday citizen as everyone else (should paris hilton be an MC?)

End with the ultimate jam of course.

Go ILM- Feed The World.

UK gig will be headlined by Coldplay. Belle and Sebastian will be involved. Wham! will reform. Geri Halliwell will think she matters enough to be high enough up the bill, and as she is a favourite of Prince Charles, and therefore "establishment" even though she's crap, she will blag a good slot and lots of publicity, or else the Spice Girls will be one of the "big" acts reforming.

Robbie Williams will make a cock of himself.

Les Rallizes Denudes reform ans wait in the wings. But the coverage cuts to a Radiohead track playing over a video of the starving, and they lose their slot. (a la Cat Stevens)

two weeks pass...
Harvey Goldsmith was just on 5Live talking about the new Live Aid, in the wake of the Spice Girls supposedly being dropped from the bill. He was asked which acts refused to play last time around. I think the presenters were a bit taken aback when he said "Many of the African-American acts". "Stevie Wonder played, didn't he?" said Nicky Campbell. "Well yes, but his initial response was that he didn't want to be the token black act, which I thought was an odd attitude to take". "Well, things are different, now, yes?" "To some extent but it seems the african-American community still seems to have a problem understanding what is going in Africa and thinking that it is any of their concern".

Blimey - a surprising approach to publicity.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but the Americans wouldn't get that. It would have to be this 'un.

Unfortunately, we hear your horrible bands in this country too. Thanks a million.

"To some extent but it seems the african-American community still seems to have a problem understanding what is going in Africa and thinking that it is any of their concern".

This sounds rather silly. Wouldn't all the "conscious" rap crews want to be there to rep it for The Motherland?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are they calling it Live 8? Will there be a performance by Chris Peat and Mark Archer?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It's to connect it with Gazza the G8 summit.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Spice Girls have been dropped for being innapropriate for such a serious and prestige event. Only serious and prestige artists have been approached.

Robbie Williams will sing "We Will Rock You", however.

dm, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The organisers deny that they even approached the Spice Girls.
