So... Madonna is working on a new albm with Mirwais again...

Jesus.. doesn't she lean? She really needs to ditch him.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That should say 'learn.'

And the currently untitled album, due out later this year, supposedly has a bit of a rock edge to it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

She must be losing it. The Madonna *I* know would have surely snatched Diplo for the next one.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't be the only one who believed that 'American Life' was a bunch of outtakes and previous tracks from the 'Music' sessions.

As long as they write new shit with no raps involved, it'll likely be quite tight.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't wait to hear what she's learned about the world in the last couple years.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually really like the sond of the Mirwais stuff. still, does seem like an odd move for her to stick with him for 3 albums straight.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

soUnd

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

She's also working with Jacques Lu Cont. Now that should be interesting, as his "Hollywood" remix is incredible.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the question is really who is going to be helping with those lyrics

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

don't worry, Lourdes will be lending a hand there.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish she would sod off. she needs to go away and never come back. she is a marketer posing as an artist and steals other peoples ideas and is quite utterly pointless. when are people going to wake up to this??

benoit, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

more Jacques less Mirwais. With respect to Mirwais she really should have ditched him by now, I agree.

To be honest Jacques would have been a better choice for the last album, I'm not sure he should even bother with her at this stage.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No he shouldn't, and she shouldn't make another album.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"she is a marketer posing as an artist and steals other peoples ideas and is quite utterly pointless. when are people going to wake up to this??"

Are people making this silly argument? When are people going to wake up to this?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what argument? i have thought she was a useless cunt since i was about 14... that was about 20 years ago... how people can go on about her at this point i find utterly hilarious. it is akin to necrophilia.

benoit, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

What a deprived childhood.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"she is a marketer posing as an artist and steals other peoples ideas and is quite utterly pointless. when are people going to wake up to this??"

So you probably don't like Pop.

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

she really does need to retire and work on that accent.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

She usually works with producers for one or two albums before giving them the boot (Stephen Bray, William Orbit), as if acknowledging their limited talented. It's ominous that she's keeping Mirwais on the payroll.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

she needs to ask Ms. Stefani to write her 'something Gwen'.

cynic, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish she would sod off. she needs to go away and never come back. she is a marketer posing as an artist and steals other peoples ideas and is quite utterly pointless. when are people going to wake up to this??

Wow. Maybe sometime within the next 22 years?

I hate Mirwais. His influence is responsible for the utter wreckage of her career, or at least one phase of it...right up there with Steven Meisel, Guy Ritchie and that Kaballah center wacko.

If the new album really is Mirwais, I hope it flops just as bad as the last one. She should know better.

Vichitravirya (steph jam), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Mirwais did an excellent job om the "Music" album, so it may not be his fault. Still strange, and unusual, that she doesn't move on now though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

She usually works with producers for one or two albums before giving them the boot (Stephen Bray, William Orbit), as if acknowledging their limited talented.

why so? it's pretty normal to change producers every once in a while, isn't it? different flavours etc.

rizzx (rizzx), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i have thought she was a useless cunt since i was about 14... that was about 20 years ago

I'm sorry you're 44 :(

Madonna is certainly capable of making amazing pop music as and when she decides to return but Mirwais + rock influence isn't going to do it. JLC might though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

Well, yeah, but note the pattern - and how her music changes ever so slightly. Most artists stick with the same producer/engineer(s).

If anything, I'm arguing for the validity of Madonna-as-auteur. Until "American Life," her consistency in releasing top-drawer singles for well nigh 20 years was remarkable.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it's pretty normal to change producers every once in a while, isn't it?

Some (in fact, most) do, others don't.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the choice of producer isn't so relevant as however stagnant or outdated you may consider Mirwais to be, it's Madonna's own sell-by date in terms of voice, songwriting and themes she can cover in a style better than someone half her age or younger that may be the real problem.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

14 + 20 = 34

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The really impressive thing about Madonna is that even though she has had her down periods, she has managed to return and make great music again. She certainly may now too, and the choice of other people besides Mirwais to work with suggests she will again make the step gradually, as she has done sometimes:

Madonna: Electro-like early 80s dance

Like a Virgin: Somewhat more organic, but still very danceable. One of few albums where she worked with the same producer throughout the entire album ("Into The Groove" was added later)

True Blue: Still several dance oriented songs, mostly produced by Stephen Bray. But also a huge number of Patrick Leonard produced ballads and more straight pop oriented Leonard-material.

Like a Prayer: In spite of a couple dance tunes ("Keep It Together", "Express Yourself"), this is probably her least dance oriented album. Half of the album consists of ballads, in addition there are also the twee of "Dear Jessie" and the classic pop of "Cherish". And a couple of Prince collaborations that sound very much like, uuhm... Prince...

Erotica: After a couple side projects ("I'm Breathless" is too different to fit in here), she releases a couple of singles with Shep Pettibone, who then goes on to produce most of her most throughoutly dance oriented album since her debut, and her least tune oriented album ever before or since.

Bedtime Stories: All over the place musically, and using a larger number of different producer than ever before or since. The most obvious development is from the tunelessness of "Erotica" and towards more tunefull stuff again. The Björk collaboration of the title track is the only thing that points forward to the electronica of her next album

Ray Of Light: Her most obvious electronica album, and also very danceable. William Orbit plays an important part on a little over half of the tracks. At the same time, it also represents the return of Patrick Leonard as her songwriting collaborator, and her most song-oriented album since "Like a Prayer"

Music: Some of the tracks are produced by Orbit, and sound very much like the stuff on the previous album. Other tracks are produced by Mirwais, and pointing forward to what the next album would be like.

American Life: Working with Mirwais for most of the album. The extensive use of acoustic guitars suggests more of a singer-songwriter approach, but the songs really don't hold up like the ones on "Like a Prayer" did.

Hard to tell what she will do next. I sort of expected her next album to be a fully fledged acoustic guitar dominated singer-songwriter thing, but working with an electronica producer would then seem strange. Dunno...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Which proves that Patrick Leonard is still her best collaborator.

I wonder how she'd sound now with live guitar-bass-drums backing her, as on "Like a Prayer."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Patrick Leonard would have made a great producer (and, of course, songwriting collaborator) for a guitar dominated singer-songwriter album by Madonna.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"I wonder how she'd sound now with live guitar-bass-drums backing her, as on "Like a Prayer."

???? Which songs were those? I have no memory of them.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The ballads had live bass and drums at least, although more piano than guitar.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Seeing as Geir hates dancing, is he confusing "danceable" with "dance-oriented"?

Madonna's rapping was prophesied when she said "Peace out!" at the end of Jellybean's 'Sidewalk Talk'. It's kinda special, right?

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked American Life a lot more than I liked Music. Madonna rapping = PRIMO ENTERTAINMENT.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i've yet to forgive my brain for that 'Mad World/Love Profusion' mash-up popping into my head.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan OTM. 'American Life' was pretty enjoyable, I found.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Much better than it's remembered.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I considered it a disappointment, but it is still way better than the completely unlistenable "Erotica", and I'd also rank it above the patchy and directionless "Bedtime Stories".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Which songs were those? I have no memory of them"

"Keep it Together" is SO live: real guitar, bass, and drums. So does "Spanish Eyes." "Til Death To Us Part" has live drums too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Directionless? Bedtime Stories has aged very well. Aside from the abysmal "take a bow" it was great. Especially "Human Nature" and "Secret."

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Take A Bow" is perhaps my favourite Madonna song. And Erotica my favourite album of hers.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Bedtime Stories is probably Madonna's strongest album, singleswise.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think it's strong in that respect as the 80s albums but I really like 'Take A Bow' and 'Bedtime Story' (thought 'Human Nature' was her worst - single - evah at the time). It's so weird how relatively poorly 'Take A Bow' did in the UK charts.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Human Nature" is one of my favorite songs of hers.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Erotica is my favourite Madonna album and Bedtime Stories is brilliant as well, they get so much unwarranted hate. Even American Life wasn't wholly worthless - 'Die Another Day' was on it ffs! her finest post-Erotica moment! as well as 'Nothing Fails' and the title track - it was just that it veered schizophrenically between amazing and dreadful, sometimes in the same song.

'Human Nature' is great! I always think of the plush, cocooned, white girl Sade feel of songs like 'Forbidden Love' and 'Love Tried To Welcome Me' when I think of Bedtime Stories though.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

she needs to ask Ms. Stefani to write her 'something Gwen'.
-- cynic (ma...), May 10th, 2005.

This would be horrible.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Madonna is a member of the English Gentry now, and has no need of cheerleader uniforms and chewing gum.

(err..we'll overlook the Britney thing, shall we?)

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, what little sanity I assumed you had is gone. "Erotica" has one of her melodically strongest 90s songs - that being "Bad Girl" - and certainly one of her best dance numbers ("Deeper And Deeper"). And Bedtime Stories is lush. "Take A Bow", yeah, but there's more than that.

As for American Life, well, I like "I'm So Stupid", "Love Profusion", "Intervention", "Mother And Father" and "Easy Ride" a lot, and it's not as if some of her earlier albums don't have filler...

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"'Die Another Day' was on it ffs! her finest post-Erotica moment!"

i hope some im-poster has just hacked the lex's computer or something. this can't be right.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Lex like a maiden aunt, but his taste really is in the fifth worst on ILM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Die Another Day" is a fantastic song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

'DAD' is only, only redeemed by its string section.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think The Lex tastes great.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'D.A.D.' is pretty much defined by it's string section though.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

possibly it is shit by association, ie with the worst bond film evah. but still.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I was about to say, people only think 'Die Another Day' is shit because it is linked to a) an embarrassing film, b) a largely embarrassing album and c) an embarrassing period of Madonna's life.

imagine dancing to it, that helps.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, Lex. I loved the song and thought, "God, i hope the whole album is like this."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the best Bond song since 'Goldeneye' (which I liked as a theme but expect many don't).

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the perennial (or possibly just post-80s) Madge Lyrics Problem abides, tho.

"It's the best Bond song since 'Goldeneye' (which I liked as a theme but expect many don't)"

ie best of three! and i'd still go with sheryl crow over madonna here, i think.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the film! I found the other BrosBonds so frickin' po-faced, especially the one with Sophie Marceauzzzzzzzzz.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But imagine Luke Goss as Bond.

The Irrelevant Pun (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

All the BrosBond films are great!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Adding to the "D.A.D." love. Couldn't stop humming it after I first heard it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

'goldeneye' (film) is a stone classic, but wtf is up with pierce's oirish repertoire in 'dad'? also the single-entendre thing.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The comic mileage inherent in watching Denise Richards run around in tanktop with a horrible bra on cannot be underestimated. It was the source of one of my best impressions ever.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Read this! Bitch."

And this may have something to do with my bi-cultural nature, but Halle and Rosamund were easily the hottest Bond girls since Famke and Izabella.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

There are pics of you with the horrible bra on that you wish to share, Dan, I can tell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post: Dan, did this involve you shouting out "I'm one of the brainiest chicks you'll ever meet! I bang Charlie Sheen!" in a particularly fey-manic way?

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It does involve me putting a sofa cushion underneath my shirt and bouncing up and down ineffectually while monotoning "JAMES WE HAVE TO DEFUSE THE BOMB" like a depressed Cyberman.
