I created this playlist because of a certain vibe I was observing from each of the four artists. They're from different decades and different scenes, however I suspect they were feeling similarly inspired & influenced. Maybe someone can explain to me exactly what these works have in common?

They are not the artists' better known tracks, for the reason that they are more ponderous than melodic, with the exceptions of Mouses on Mars and Basement Jack, who have never knowingly written a melody.

shut it, gimmick

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You shut it gimmick, until you understand that music becomes well known because it is melodic. Stop listening to talentless monkeys like 50 Cents and listen to proper pop music like the Green Pajamas, or Sad Cafe.

"HAHA"

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a cute idea that there are some melodies that came out as melodies unbeknownst to their creators. (why should we care whether or not they knew?)

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Usually if they do not know the rules of melody they will come out with something which resembles melody, but is not structurally melodic.

Who is this Comstock? Is it Mecha-Geir?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

he's not as funny as Geir.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither are you.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir makes better money in stand-up than music, don't'cha know.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be surprised if Geir made any money.

This vibe seems bouncy, melodic, emphasizing higher frequencies and maybe even a little bit melancholic at the same time. You could probably also throw in some Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express" and Bergheim 31's "Random Access Memory".

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I think I am funnier than Geir.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also:
- use of the upbeat.
- the "horn-like" keyboard sounds (except in The Police)
- the cadence of the vocals between The Police & Basement Jax feel strongly related.
- the music seems to be saying "it's night, I'm in a city, and my perspective is changing".
- these are some of the slower, oddball offerings by these artists.

And interestingly (for Comstock) these are two of the Basement Jax most melodic tracks.
Thanks for additions to the playlist, Dominique. What else?!

you should check out "Embrace the Herd" by The Gist

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and "Avalon" by Roxy Music

There are other tracks on the Bergheim 34 album that, if less good, emphasize the vibe you're looking for much more strongly than "Random Access Memory." Unfortunately it’s the kind of album I’d have to go home and look at to give you track names. The first one, I think, maybe counts.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm impressed with Dom's recall -- that's a great suggestion that I'd never have dredged up myself, despite the thing sitting on my desk at home as I type this.)

Well I think I am funnier than Geir.

Well I think Ian Huntley is funnier than either of you.

Check out Safety Scissors' song "Amnesia I need you" and the Mouse on Mars song "Untitled States of" and The Jones Girls "Nights Over Egypt" and the Spooks In Space song "Emil (Night Rate)" for more of this groove . . . .
