I can't decide whether or not to get excited about this, despite the fact that these guys were one of the first bands I out and out LOVED as a pre-teen.

It'll be their first album with Cindy since Cosmic Thing! I'd hope for at least one amazing track.

The interviews to promote it should be interesting, as I have no idea what any of them have been doing for the past 12 years or so.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

considering that most of the recent thread we had about them was all "they've been shit since x record", I dunno how warmly this will be received. one of the new songs on their greatest hits, "Hallucinating Pluto", was pretty awesome, though, so they might still have something in 'em.

Playing casinos and state fairs. (Well, and pretty okay tours with The Pretenders, Go-Gos and Psy Furs.)

As spotty as "Good Stuff" is, I still love 'em with all my heart. Wish they'd work with different producers, though.

I worry about any band putting out a full-length release this far gone from their last.

In The B's case, there's part of me that thinks no matter how they try, their best days as writers are behind them. However, as Daniel mentioned- if they brought in the right producers and maybe some additional writers, they could really put out a sparkler.

OTOH how ever good or bad it ends up being, I'll like it anyway.

There's one major counterexample to this...

Just Fred

It's a solo album, I know. But it's definitely hope.

Who is producing, anyway? That's the key.

And they're playing in early July in Orange County (at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa) with Junior Senior!

FUCK! They sure know who to get to open for them. They should tack on U.S.E. as well.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Their official website has a September 2004 interview with Fred stating that no producer had even been discussed at that point. I would be hugely surprised if a summer release/tour doesn't get pushed back. They're obviously notoriously slow workers. Production on the last two CDs (as you probably know) has been split between Nile Rodgers and Don Was. I can't differentiate between their tracks; both favor an overproduced sound (especially the big rock drum and guitar sounds and way too many vocal overdubs.)

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

WHIP was great off Just Fred!! I gotta hear that again somehow.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

omg a steve albini b-52's album would be kinda neat. get that old school first-album sound back.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm praying for that, too, miccio.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, a DFA-produced B-52's album would be great too!

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think with the big revival of the 79-82 years, the B-52's recognize the golden opportunity to put out a funky, stripped-down, new-wave dance record.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

One would hope. Does ANYONE still hire Was or Rodgers these days anyway?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, I know Fred has good taste. He's a super record collector geek in Jersey... He obviously knows Albini, and surely knows of DFA.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

when i "retire" i really want to open a place like that.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the bio on their site makes it sound like the cramps never existed... yeah i'd love a return to first album sound, but i guess where never gonna get that in the days when 'roam' is used on every 2nd car ad.

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to hear Fred do the kind of disturbing scream he does on "Planet Claire," that would be cool.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 May 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

hell, i'd take another "deadbeat club"!

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 May 2005 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

We're setting ourselves up for massive disappointment, but I have a feeling this is indeed gonna ride the trail of their "52 Girls" heyday. There is no way they are gonna get back to the commercial level they had in 1990 so they might as well do it for fun.

Don't know how long this has been up on the B's website, or if it's been discussed elsewhere, but:

The B-52's head into the studio early Sept. with producer Steve Osborne (KT Tunstall, Suede, New Order) to begin recording songs for their new album!

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)
