"What was I (not) thinking? What's the stupidest thing you've ever said about music?

The other day, on another message board I wrote "Since when has 'White Man In Hammersmith Palais' been ska." Then the anvil fell out of the sky and onto my head. Idiot.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not me, but an idiot atty who I used to work for who went to
Hah-vahd law was yellingly adamant about the Bosstones (sp?) having written "Simmer Down." His main defense was "I saw them play it in a club in Boston." My response was: My girlfriend has heard me sing "Happy Birthday" hundreds of times. Does that mean that I wrote it?

I seriously wish that I had, actually. My royalties would be AMAZING. I might actually be able to go see the Bostones. In Boston.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones!!! Man, some of those singles were good.. then it was all downhill with "Royal Oil."

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was a freshman in college I used the word "post-punk" to describe any band that sounded like the Replacements. Oops.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"I kind of like those Maroon 5 guys."

Aaron St. John (StJohn), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

From the revived soul-jazz thread currently adjacent to this one:

I OD'd on this stuff a few years ago, there's just so much out there it all starts to sound kind of mediocre after awhile. It's harder to keep things interesting over a one chord funk vamp than over rhythm changes, I think (which is why most jam bands=suck).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my first-ever post to ILM was some whining about how Avril is a fake because the Matrix was writing her songs. I got the rockist kicked out of me.

Aaron A., Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I've said a million stupid things about music and will probably continue to do so forever. BFD, it's a process.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I once read an interview with the Pet Shop Boys, in which one of them said that once certain commercially successful acts went on the slide stopped having big hits, they formed a sort of pathetic devotion to them that hadn't been there before. (I think that one of the examples cited was Adam Ant.)

I thought that this was such an interesting viewpoint that I found myself passing it off as my own a few days later.

"Oh yeah? What acts are you thinking of?" - said with a suspicious "I'll bet he's posing" narrowing of the eyes.

I couldn't think of any.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a tendency to deride whatever song happens to be annoying me as "the WORST music EVER!". I have to establish some sort've ranking system, obviously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, might I suggest that you develop a rating system around ancient torture devices?

In High school my friend asked a group of us if we wanted to go and see Nirvana the next time they toured. It was 1998.

To a youngster seeking S/D on Grand Funk Railroad from an old-schooler: "I dunno, never had much time for the dumb groups."

brianiac (briania), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

1/ "Where you guys from, London?" My first question during a (very short) interview with this band called The Fall in 1981. I was quite drunk, and I (obviously) didn't know a lot about them.

2/ "Reggae is boring" - early 80s

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Me discussing hip-hop in general with a friend, c. 1987: "Sure, I mean the rhymes and the rhyming is great, no question. And scratching is pretty cool. But I still say it'd be better if they unplugged all those damn drum machines and started playing with REAL instruments, played by real musicians. Funky ones, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers!"

it may not quite be the stupidest thing i've ever said about music, but back in high school: "I hate materialism in hip hop - like that Big Pimpin song, that song sucks so much!"
pretty damn close.

I remember assuming that the Police were a French band early on because of their first couple of album titles. "Oh, have you heard the Police? They're a cool new French band!" I may have said that once or twice -- for which I should've been hit across the cheeks with a big, slimey sea bass.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

i say stupid things about music all the time. i recent went off on a tirade at a packed dinner party about sexism in rap. i traced it down to pimp obsessions, sexual frustration as teenagers, lack of father figure, too much 2 live crew, too much porn and being nerdish. the table was pretty silent as i didnt let anyone else speak. oh to turn back time.

mwahah, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

When I first heard Daft Punk's "One More Time" I said they "did a Eiffel 65 song"... meaning "awfully bad". I like both "One More Time" and Eiffel 65 now. I could even say "Discovery" is one of my favourite albums ever, "always was!", etc. ;)

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

At some point, someone gave me both The Stone Roses and Loveless and I kept mixing up the two. "Dude, I think that Stone Roses CD you gave me is fucked up-- I can't hear any of the vocals."

"I [HEART] STONE TEMPLE PILOTS." Not said...so much as graffiti'd all over my pencil-case, folders, school bag, and diary in my mid teens.

Well, they sounded like Pearl Jam, and at the time that was very appealing to MY STUPID BROKEN EARS.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

OK, I found one of my earliest "Desert Island Discs" usenet posts circa early 1992... dear god.. I'm not as embarrassed for the music choices (excepting one, take a wild guess) as much as.... well, read it. The writing is childish and lame. I was 20, but far more intelligent things were said by people much younger than me then...

...

Well, here are mine:

1.XTC _The_Big_Express_
Winners hands down on best production on an album. Also we have some of XTC's finest (and grindiest) moments here.
Hi-lites: EVERYTHING!

2.Minutemen _Three_Way_Tie_(For_Last)_
Although 40% of this album are covers, the other 60% of originals cram more emotions into minutes than most other bands do in albums. (Plus the covers are great)
Hi-lites: "Political Nightmare","What is it?","Courage","Bermuda"

3.NoMeansNo _Live_And_Cuddley_
Next to the MC5, this is the best live release ever. Just goes to show how fun and awe-inspiring a live show can be from three old guys from Canada. (My favorite concert ever was a NoMeansNo show.) The summation of all punk energy in one 5" tray of aluminum.
Hi-lites: "Rags and Bones","The Day Everything Became Nothing", "Brother Rat/What Slayde Says","The End of All Things", "Teresa Give Me That Knife"

4.The Boredoms _Soul_Discharge_
Absolute definition of punk for the 90's. Hardcore Japanese expressionists bound to crack a smile, a laugh, and a mosh from ANYBODY.
Hi-lites: "BubbleDrop Shot","52 Boredom","Sun Gun Run","Z & U & T & A"

5.Julianna Hatfield _Hey_Babe_
Most recent addition to my DiD list. Contains the sweetest song with cussing on it. "..makes me wanna go and FUCK SHIT... up."
Hi-lites: "Everybody Loves Me But You","Ugly","No Answer","Nirvana", "Get Off Your Knees"

6.Sonic Youth _Daydream_Nation_
Don't be jealous, guys. I like this more than D. Jr's _Bug_.
Hi-lites: "Teenage Riot","Silver Rocket","Total Trash","Eric's Trip", "Candle","Providence","Rain King","Kissability", "Eliminator Jr."

7.Wire _On_Returning_(1977-1979)_
I would choose all three albums if I could, but since this one has the most songs hands down, I have no choice. Although I MISS some of my faves "Too Late", "On Returning (Peel Sessions)","Culture Vultures"
Hi-lites: "1 2 X U" (of course), "Strange", "Ex-Lion Tamer", and a WHOLE bunch of others

8.Hypnolovewheel _Angel_Food_
A sorely underrated album. And even Hypno-heads will say past albums were better. But this contains what could VERY WELL be the formula for pop songs to come which I could deal with.
Hi-lites: "Candyman","Wonderful Again","Wow","The Big Bang Theory", "Under Water"

9.They Might Be Giants _They_Might_Be_Giants_
I wish I was a kid growing up on these guys. But being a high-school student when this came out was the next best thing.
Hi-lites: "Put your Hand inside the Puppet Head","Rabid Child", "Nothing's Going To Change My Clothes", "She's an Angel", "Youth Culture Killed My Dog"

10.My Bloody Valentine _Isn't_Anything_
_Loveless_ was extremely close, but I couldn't live without writhing furiously to "Feed Me With Your Kiss". MBV are the most immobile band to mosh to.
Hi-lites: "Feed Me With Your Kiss","You Never Should","Soft as Snow", "Sueisfine","Lose Your Breath", "I Can See it"

There endlessly more albums I could have included here, but this sums up my faves at the moment.

coming close: The Mabuses _The_Mabuses_
THE BEST DERANGED POP from Down under this year!

...

What the hell? I certainly talked a lot of about "MOSHING YEAH" even though I was scared as shit to actually do it. I was a fucking corn dog.

donut e-goo (donut), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Not really about music per se as just another fragment of my early college days, when i did an improv "noiz" radio show from '93 to '94. the writing is definitely very stupid.

Nov 22, 1993:

KUCI 88.9fM in Irvine presents the continuation of
the noiz production:

&!$yuer*%^tv%*@$

(simply pronounced "Your Tv")

Still happening every Thursday nite/Friday morning from Midnight to 3AM.

**********THE SHOWS THAT HAVE HAPPENED *****************************

June 25th, 1993
1. "GETTING A HEAD" / "AUTOMOTIVE STEREO"
The unlackadaisal debut. Everything from Tom Vu to Chrysler
Car Stereo Systems to Kung Fu to Almond Joy to pretty much anything else. The loudest of the studio performances thus far. (~180 min.)

July 2nd, 1993
(No show. Found a sub)

July 9th, 1993
2. "TOAST" / "CASEY KASEM AND PERSONAL POWER"
The sophomore jinx. A little bit of "TOAST" with Casey Kasem's promotional rantings plus some Bette Davis and a live revelry
during the final hour of the show. (~180 minutes)

July 16th, 1993
3. "THE STAIRWELL"
ALL LIVE! (aside from various in-studio gremlins for 3.7% of the show) Various instruments and non instruments combining the power of feedback and metal objects in a deep hollow stairwell of a
three story building. [BECAUSE of tape recorder errors, this one
contains only the second half of the show. But the second half was
more diverse anyway] (~90 minutes)

July 23rd, 1993
4. "TELEPHONIC"
Live callers and call-ins here. Casey bugs his little voice here every now and then along with some horrific Tube Bar, Jerky Boys, and 976 banter. (~180 minutes)

July 30th, 1993
5. "BOREDOMS" / "LIVE NEGATIVLAND"
Well everyone takes a break from the 3 hour performance only to track an entire Boredoms album (_Pop_Tatari_) and the supreme _Negativconcertland_ 2-CD, supplied by What Is.
(SHOW NOT RECORDED since this featured previously recorded works)

August 6th, 1993
6. "ROCKUMENTARY" / "THE LETTER `W`"
IMHO the BEST of the studio shows so far. There are 4 pieces, each 45 minutes each. 6: 50's rockumentary, 6.25: 60's rockumentary 6.50: 70's rockumentary 6.75: the letter "W". Each rockumentary deconstructs songs of the genre with appropriate B-movie samples. The Letter W begins as destroying a guitar then turns into an ambient moan, all backed by a grammar records and some "W"RC
talk show hosts. (~180 minutes)

August 13th, 1993
7. "UNTHEMATIC #1"
There is no theme to this one. Perhaps for genius can come
out of staring at a blank wall instead of being loaded with
themes and ideas..... (~180 minutes)

August 20th, 1993
8. "MICHAEL's ANSWERING MACHINE" / "SEATTLE" / "THE MUSIC INDUSTRY" / "LOVE"
Just what college radio has ALWAYS wanted to do! Slag the major labels in a BIG way....!!! Also features your favorite
Seattle hits completely deconstructed and secrets in fashion and
making love. Grunge HEVVY. (~180 minutes)

August 27th, 1993
9. "SECONDS PER MEASURE"
A more rhythmic hypnotic variation of the show with minimal
sound bites and all the colors. My first complete solo performance. Contains samples from UNWOUND, WEDDING PRESENT, GRENADINE, BEASTIE BOYS, NAPALM DEATH, SONIC YOUTH, SOME VELVET SIDEWALK, DRIVE LIKE JEHU, BLACK SHEEP, PELL MELL, HYPNOLOVEWHEEL, TH FAITH HEALERS, NOMEANSNO, fIREHOSE and other stolen bass lines, guitar licks and/or beats mixed together as one.
(~180 minutes) [Ed.: i think this is where i first started doing "mash ups", haha]

September 3rd, 1993
10. "DISCO" / "UFOs"
Another live deconstruction featuring Donna Summer, Van McCoy, Revolting Cocks, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, and that crazy RRR 100 7" with all the locked grooves. Not to mention a spiffy UFO documentary from 1976.
(~180 minutes)

September 10th, 1993
REPEAT of show #1 (GETTING A HEAD/AUTOMOTIVE STEREO)

September 17th, 1993
11. "UNTHEMATIC #2"
More of a live thing than samples. Instruments include a guitar being destrung, a rain stick, a flute, some snazzy cheap Casio
keyboard with sampling ability, and full on Helter Skelter. This show ended at 2:30am which explains its slightly shorter length.
(~150 minutes)

September 24th, 1993
12. "INSTAGON (liveperformance)" feat. "CROWLEY"/"GET SMART"/"CONTEST"
FREAKAPALOOZA! Around 16 people in a crowded lobby with 24 effects pedals, tons of guitars and keyboards having it all out at once, with a balcony stage featuring poetry, rain sticks, and acoustic guitars.
(~150 minutes)

October 1st, 1993
REPEAT of show #5 (BOREDOMS/NEGATIVLAND)

October 8th, 1993
13. "SUMMERY"
A way to finally close the doors to all the samples, noises, and ideas used in the past. Sorta like a live performance of all the
past live shows all in one.
A good primer to &!$yuer*%^tv%*@$. (~180 minutes)

October 15th, 1993
14. "MORRISSEY URANUS" / "BASSWANQUE #1"
The first new performance (solo) of the quarter. Features an in depth look into Morrissey fandom and jokes. Also features a small piece on "a supreme race born from the blood of Uranus" (See MST3K newsgroup for more info). The rest is a complete exploration on wanking on a bass through more effects than Pink Floyd can do in a pat of the foot. (~180 minutes)

October 22nd, 1993
REPEAT FRAGMENTS of shows #2,#7, and #8
(MICHAEL's ANSWERING MACHINE/SEATTLE/TOAST/PERSONAL POWER/YA DAMN LIL')

October 29th, 1993
15. "714 -- MARK OF THE PRIEST" / "MANDIBLE CHATTER" / "ANGELHOOD"
This one sorta fell apart since the Laguna Beach fires reached
dangerously close the day before, and students including myself were still feeling unnerved. However, many felt the show still succeeded, though I thought it could have been grand. Anyway, SATAN is the keynote speaker here. This one features a BACK MASKING of PEARL JAM's "JEREMY" which supposedly influence some kids to hold a classroom hostage in Huntington Beach. (Sound familiar to fans of the brilliant Contra Costa County cohorts?) References to 90210's Brenda and a Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell are made.
The second hald of the show features in some strange order of fragments, some live cassettes of projects called MANDIBLE CHATTER and THE ANGELHOOD.
Very scary stuff perfectly timed right before Halloween. These are on the Milenoise Cassettes label and I'll be glad to give you the address once I can find it out. (~180 minutes)

November 5th, 1993
(No show. Found a sub)

November 12th, 1993
16. "WESTWARD" / "GUITARWANQUE #1"
A most non-vocal show, starting off with some documentary LPs
on how the west was won brought to you by Chevron over a nice slicing guitar rumble. The rest is simply a guitar laced white noise venture with some beats and record scratchings mixed in. The first
non-solo show in more than a month. (~180 minutes)

November 19th, 1993
17. "CITYHUNTER91" / "RELIGION OF A MILLION HURTS"
A series of samples from the Japanimated Action/comedy
"Cityhunter 91" plus the extendo-noise of the riff from Accident On Jamboree's "Religion of a Million Hurts".
ALSO REPEATS of show number 6 with "60's" and "THE LETTER W"
(~90 minutes)

******** UP AND COMING SHOWS ****************************

November 26th, 1993
(Thanksgiving vacation. No show)

December 3rd, 1993
18. "CITYHUNTER91 II" and more and more!

Kevin from Trumans Water is eager to perform on one of these
shows, so keep an ear and eye tuned.

******** PURPOSE OF THE SHOW *************************
The idea of the show is to demonstrate that DJ's can do more than just play songs and back-announce them. In other words, there really is no "purpose" other than to take advantage a lot of studio equipment. It goes to show that you don't need a lot of musical talent to create an earful of sick enjoyment.

Every show will involve a three-hour in-studio performance of free form noise created by various staff members of KUCI. These will
probably change every week; however, I have volunteered to take responsibility for the show, so I will always be involved.

If you're familiar with the OVER THE EDGE show on KPFA in N/C Cali, then this might give you an idea of a general genre for
"&!$yuer*%^tv%*@$". I will stress that the show is NOT an
OVER THE EDGE WANNABE. [Ed.: yeah, right] It's a lot more cacophonious. I'll admit that there are similarities in some cases. I am a fan of Negativland, so some influences will be unavoidable.

**** YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE SHOW ****

Simply send a cassette tape of any samples on TV that you have accumulated, and most likely I will use it. I will also give
credit and acknowledgement to people over the air who send tapes
whether I use them or not.

...

anyway, sorry for the long posts. Just pointing that I made an amateur career out of churning out a lot of verbal musical stupidity.
