The best boyband tracks!!

Were there any?
I can name only two: 'Tonight' - New Kids On The Block and 'Keep On Moving' by 5ive.

NB: Bands like Duran Duran or Kajagoogoo DO NOT count as a boyband - they played their own instruments.
But we can think songs from Bros, New Kids, Take That, East17, Backstreet Boys, N'SYNC, Westlife... loads of crap. Or not??

zeus, Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Boygroups suck. I don't think that they are great. The only song I like is Take That's "Relight my fire". The other stuff is crap.

Regular John (Regular John), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I can't list anything from Cupid and Psyche 85 then, even though there was much more going on lyrically there than in most music, period.

That's not cocaine! It's Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the Backstreet Boys greatest hits for two quid, best investment ever - they've got tons of fantastic songs.

Blue ('All Rise', 'Bubblin'') and N*Sync ('Pop') have definitely had their moments, too. I was never a Take That fan but I know loads of people who'll rep for them. As for East 17 - 'House Of Love'! 'Deep'!

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

5ive did several good ones. Titles escape me.
Take That - Back for Good
East 17 - Steam, Stay another Day, Deep
Worlds Apart - Crazy

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I like a single Backstreet Boys song, and I find their recent attemt at a "comeback" laughable.

The best *NSync tracks are "Gone" and "Girlfriend."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Backstreet Boys- Quit Playing Games With My Heart, Everybody (Backstreet's Back), Larger Than Life, Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely
N'Sync- It's Gonna Be Me, Bye Bye Bye
5ive- Everybody Get Up
Take That- Never Forget

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bros- When Will I Be Famous

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Motownphilly" and "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

History will prove Backstreet Boys to have been a better band than N'Sync.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, 'Keep On Moving' by 5ive, of course!

Other great Backstreet Boys songs apart from the ones Dom mentioned (otm on all counts) - 'I Want It That Way', 'The Call', 'More Than That'.

Boyz II Men - 'End of The Road'

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: Blue- Fly By II.

Possibly the peak moment of British R&B.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bell Biv Devoe - 'Poison'

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What about all those weird American boybands we didn't get over here? 98 Degrees, O-Town, etc. Anything worth checking out there?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

911- Bodyshakin'

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Brother Beyond- The Harder I Try

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I second "Gone".

The only BSB track I still like is "Quit Playing Games", probably because of the ghey cheesy dancing/crying in the rain video hahaha. Five had "Keep On Moving" and "When the Lights go Out" (was that the title?).

Also 98 Degrees "Because of You" and the song they did with Stevie Wonder on the Mulan soundtrack.

Roz, Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My faves:

Backstreet Boys - Shape Of My Heart
5ive - Let's Dance
Blue - Too Close & If You Come Back

Does Bodies Without Organs' "Conquering America" count?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I was actually thinking about making a seperate thread about this, but I might as well ask here ..

I really don't understand the appeal of "I Want It That Way," and yet the statistics on this song from acclaimedmusic.net show the following...

Village Voice (USA) - Singles of the Year #5
Rolling Stone & MTV (USA) - The 100 Greatest Pop Songs Since the Beatles (2000) #10
Michaelangelo Matos (USA) - Top 100 Singles of the 1990s (2001) #88
VH1 (USA) - The 100 Greatest Songs from the Past 25 Years (2003) #61
Blender (USA) - Standout Tracks from the 500 CDs You Must Own (2003) No Order

What the deal with this?? It comes across to me as a song about pretty much nothing, similar to "Fly" by Sugar Ray, where the lyrics were pretty much just written for the sake of having nice sounding words in the song, even though one line of lyric has almost nothing to do with the next.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember any N'SYNC song by heart now, really. Backstreet Boys at least had some songs I can, though most of them were shite.

zeus, Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill I think that the point of "I Want It That Way" is how it builds and builds with the harmonies and key changes etc. I actually like "Shape Of My Heart" slightly more but I think they're both pretty great.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Those particular harmonies and keychanges never struck me as anything to go crazy over. Pretty boring IMO.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Agree with Bill. "I Want it That Way" is probably my least favourite BSB hit, it's pretty dull.

Roz, Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And yet, it garnered their highest praise ever. WTF?? The 10th greatest pop song since The Beatles?!?! Is that not crazy talk?

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

So do Busted not count?

elwisty (elwisty), Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

all this way before someone says TWO THIRDS : 'i want to be alone'.

piscesboy, Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

2wo 3rds, call them by their name.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tonight" is the New Kids best song--it's so ELO-- but "Step by Step", "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and "Hangin' Tough" are good, too. I liked N'Sync's "Space Cowboy", it's pretty goofy. Backstreet's "Larger Than Life" is fantastic! The two boyband songs by DuJour from the Josie and the Pussycat soundtrack are superb--"Dujour Around the World" and "Backdoor Lover."

I saw Nick Carter and Kevin Whatshisname from Backstreet outside of the Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood last week. Nick looked a little puffy but Kevin is as chiseled as ever.

Moosie Grosvenor (Arthur), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

When 'NSync's "Bye Bye Bye" came out, I had the notion that it was the greatest pop song that I'd ever heard.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

V - Hip To Hip

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 May 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a Boyband

Ben Dot (1977), Saturday, 14 May 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think for BSB it starts and finishes with "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and NSync with "Pop", although I'm not that well schooled in either's back catalogue. Who wrote and produced "Pop" by the way?

NSync's JC Chasez went on and did an ace solo album called Schizophrenic, the best tracks being "All Day Long I Dream About Sex", "Some Girls Dance With Women" and "Blowing Me Up With Her Love".

Finally, the East17 song I remember best is "Alright".

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 14 May 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Charlotte - "I Just Wanna Live"

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 14 May 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wrote and produced "Pop" by the way?

Justin Timberlake and his then-verygoodfriend/NSYNC's choreographer Wade Robson co-wrote it, and BT produced it.

I liked BSB's "Shape of My Heart" better than "I Want It That Way," but I hear the latter song much more often on the radio and in shops. I can't remember a single 98 Degrees or O-Town song.

Chasez's working on his next album. Timberlake just had surgery to remove nodules on his vocal cords; depending on the source he's either concentrating on his movie career or releasing an album later this year.

Lesley v.2, Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we have a possible release date for JC's album? The record company didn't promote it at all which is a real shame because I reckon the tracks I mentioned would've picked up some mainstream success and also there's the Basement Jaxx link. Schizophrenic is better than Justified but Justin had the Neptunes link plus the Britney link.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

lyte funkie ones

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Want it That Way" (Tell me why-eeey) by BSB
"Everybody (Backstreet's Back)"

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Faded" by Soul Decision is easily the best song to come out of that late-'90s boyband explosion. The great pop-funk bass and guitars and the horny, blunt lyrics about the dude deciding it's time to go from friends to humpers make me wonder, since this was marketed to twelve to sixteen year old girls, if this was an intentional act of subversion or just a happy accident. It's somewhat similar to Next's "Too Close," which is my favorite number one single about boners ever.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There have been very few that don't suck. However, these were all quite decent pop songs:

New Kids On The Block: Tonight
Backstreet Boys: Their two first singles
Boyzone: Different Beat
Take That: Babe

If you count Herman's Hermits, The Monkees, a-ha, Duran Duran and Wham! there would be lots more btw.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 14 May 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Osmonds: "One Bad Apple," "Double Lovin'," "Yo-Yo," "Down By the Lazy River," "Crazy Horses," "Hold Her Tight"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 14 May 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we have a possible release date for JC's album?

No set release date yet, but either MTV or JC's website said last month that he was halfway done. I'm hoping (perhaps foolishly, specially after Schizophrenic's release was pushed back so many times) that it'll be released later this year.

Back to the boyband tracks..."Daydream Believer" if we're counting the Monkees. Also "On Bended Knee" and "Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men.

Lesley v.2, Saturday, 14 May 2005 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Faded" by Soul Decision

Yeah! I'd forgotten about this song.

Which reminds me, no mentions yet of "I Wanna Sex You Up"?

Roz, Sunday, 15 May 2005 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bros' "Drop The Boy" and "I Owe You Nothing" are good too.

BON - "Boys"

V - "Hip To Hip" is the best boyband record ever, pretty much, but "You Stood Up" and "Blood Sweat and Tears" are good too.

Obviously if Wham! counts then, well, everything. (Yeah, I know, George M doesn't fit yr rockist criteria but Andrew Ridgely never played a thing!)

I put together a Rough Guide To Boybands for ILM's rough guide series but the page seems to have disappeared.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 May 2005 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

LFO - "Summer Girls"

A1 - "Same Old Brand New You"!!! This is U&K, brilliant song.

5ive's best songs were "Keep On Movin", "Got The Feelin", that final ballad they did, the filter-disco one on their last album was good too and there was a great bit of baggy on there as well, I should dig it out!

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 May 2005 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A1- Same Old Brand New You is indeed a masterpiece

Abby (abby mcdonald), Sunday, 15 May 2005 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom is right - 5ive's 'Let's Dance' and the others are pretty good. 'Summer Girls' is one of my favourite songs of the past 10 years.

Backstreet's new one is not bad. It's doing well on iTunes, I noticed this morning. The Neptunes mix of 'The Call' is good, used to get the odd nod here.

Wade Robson could've made a real killing in this market. I prefer his mix of Mandy Moore's 'Candy' to the original.

Jordan K hasn't been mentioned? There are at least 3 or 4 proper gems on his solo album. I wonder if he will get anywhere with the new one he says he's dropping this year. 'Give It To You' and 'A Different Party' are as blistering as boyband dancers get.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Sunday, 15 May 2005 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Neptunes remix of "The Call" is flat-out rugged and fantastic; I don't think they've ever sounded better.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 15 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realise there was so much love (two others, so far), for "summer girls".

I love "give it to you", too.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 15 May 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Neptunes remix of "The Call" is flat-out rugged and fantastic; I don't think they've ever sounded better.

Does Pharrell guest on it at all? I pray not.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 15 May 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Same Old Brand New You" may be added to my list too. Not too bad that one.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 15 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

PJ and Duncan. Too many ground-breaking pieces of music to even contemplate. Oh, ok then - the breakneck majesty of "Our Radio Rocks", the mellow heroin of "Shout", the Wutangier-than-thou "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" and the fronded, gentlemanly blitzkreig of "U Krazy Kats" to name but four.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Sunday, 15 May 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Pharrell guest on it at all? I pray not.

Rather wisely, they use The Clipse instead (this came out right before "Grindin'" dropped and was kind of free advertising for them).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 15 May 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not that schooled in this area, but particular favourites of mine off the top of my head:

n'sync - "pop", "girlfriend"

westlife - "world of our own"

blue - "all rise", "one love"

take that - "pray", "back for good", "never forget", "relight my fire."

boyzone - "picture of you", "a different beat"

backstreet boys - "i want it that way", "as long as you love me", "everybody", "show me the meaning of being lonely"

east 17 - "each time", "deep", "house of love"

another level - "be alone no more", "bomb diggy", "freak me"

(no mentions as yet for another level? either these chappies have been cruelly written out of history, or people see don't see them as a boyband).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Our Radio! Our Radio! Our Radio Rocks!

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad Boys Inc - "Walking On Air" was pretty xmas candyfloss doo-wop

(I don't have this anymore and haven't heard it for several years and am an unreliable witness)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

NB: Bands like Duran Duran or Kajagoogoo DO NOT count as a boyband - they played their own instruments.

I suppose this disqualifies A1 too then, since they played their own instruments and wrote their own songs. They were still manufactured and put together by a manager after an audition though (one important criteria being they were indeed able to play and write their own instruments/material), which makes them very much a boyband the way I see it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

nsync - tell me baby

f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (adamwest), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Color Me Badd - "I Adore (Mi Amor)"

J (Jay), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ultra - Say It Once!

""Faded" by Soul Decision is easily the best song to come out of that late-'90s boyband explosion."

Yeah I loved this. "Ooh It's Kinda Crazy" was quite good too but it didn't have that irrestible smirk (although the brown haired one went from chump to almost hot by shaving off his facial hair for the video clip).

The Neptunes remix of "The Call" is one of the best dancefloor tracks I can think of (in terms of irresistible grooves the only other Neptunes track to match it is "Hot In Herre" I think). I enjoyed playing it at Club FT.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm awfully fond of nsync's "drive myself crazy" and "it's gonna be me"... i think, for me, what pushes 'i want it that way' over the other backstreet ballads is its sheer ubiquity that one summer - it really saturated my brain!

dave k, Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the a*teens wouldn't count here would they? "i promised myself" and "floorfiller" both have the boys on main vocal duties though so i'll rep for those two utterly brilliant records.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 16 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so much the lyrics, but I like the music and vocal harmonies of "God Must Have Spent..."

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 16 May 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

off top of head -

East 17: "Stay another day", "Alright"
Nsync: "Gone", "it's gonna be me", "girlfriend", "the 2 of us", "it makes me ill" (o just SEARCH IT ALL)
Take That: "Never Forget", "could it be magic", "everything changes"
BSB: "Everybody (backstreet's back)", "the call" neptunes remix

I am coming round to Boyzone's "Love me for a reason": it's actually kind of fantastic.

spontine (cis), Monday, 16 May 2005 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

East 17 also had the uber-classic 'Around The World', as well as 'Deep', 'House Of Love' and 'Thunder'. I'll also agree that a part of me likes Cis' Boyzone nom.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Monday, 16 May 2005 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

No love yet for Boyzone's "No Matter What"? You could also include O-Zone's "Dragostea Din Tei".

Of the ones already mentioned, I'd go with "Pray" and "Back For Good" (Take That), "Keep On Movin'" and "Let's Dance" (5ive), "Deep" (East 17), "When Will I Be Famous" (Bros), "Pop" (NSync).

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 16 May 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only person to think that "Keep On Movin" sounds like Haircut 100?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 May 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

'Love Me For A Reason' always pissed me off because of the tautologous lyrics. I can't show love to any Boyzone work, sorry.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Everybody (Backstreet's Back), Back For Good, Stay Another Day. I seem to go for the songs about people either being back, or not going away. Bless.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dragostea Din Tei" is a definite. Best boyband single of the decade?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Take That and East 17 don't count either, then, as at least one member of each band played an instrument (Barlow and Mortimer respectively, both piano).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

omg Another Level have been criminally ignored on this thread so far; 'Bomb Diggy' and 'Be Alone No More' reprazent.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I see 911 won Hit Me Baby One More Time this week, despite one of them being on crutches. I am unsure of the significance of this.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyzone's "Picture of You" - about the only good Boyzone song I can think of.

Roz (Roz), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Another Level's 'Summertime' is butter.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dragostea Din Tei - this is not a boyband's product, this is Eastern European dancefloor/eurotrash/dunnowtf

zeus, Monday, 16 May 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry but the words "Best" and "Boyband" should never be used in the same sentence. If you like them then good for you...

Max Murdoc, Monday, 16 May 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

A1 'Same Old Brand New You'
Take That 'Pray', 'It Only Takes A Minute'
N-Sync 'Gone', 'Pop'
Bros 'When Will I Be Famous'
East 17 'Stay Another Day', 'House Of Love'
Boyz II Men 'Motownphilly'
New Edition 'Candy Girl'
All 4 One 'Candy Rain'
MN8 'I've Got A Little Something For U'
Jackson 5 'I Want You Back', 'ABC'
2wo 3hirds 'I Want The World'

Fave Another Level single is 'I Want You For Myself' but don't really rate them.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Five Best:

Take That - "Back For Good"
NKotB - "Hangin' Tough"
N Sync - "It's Gonna Be Me"
New Edition - "Candy Girl"
LFO - "Summer Girls"

Ron N (Viz), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

2wo Third3-wise "Hear Me Calling" was the finest hour

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Stop? or 2 Becomes 1? or Say You'll Be There? or Wannabe? or Spice Up Your Life?

They rather fall at the first hurdle of being boyband tracks.

Do we count Blackstreet as a boyband? If so, "No Diggity" is a challenger for best boyband track ever.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If Boyz II Men count, then I would certainly like to mention "The End Of The Road", which was a great song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ron N's got the dirt we all want to hear!!!!!!

The Ghost of Spice Transsexuals??? (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

lucy furr, Monday, 16 May 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Blackstreet are a MANband, and firmly in the 'heavy R&B' (to quote T Riley) camp.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 16 May 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless all bands consisting of males not writing their own songs count (that would be a zillion doo-wop acts among others), I would not classify Blackstreet as a boyband.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Boybands really are shit, aren't they?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless all bands consisting of males not writing their own songs count (that would be a zillion doo-wop acts among others), I would not classify Blackstreet as a boyband.

I might have mis-read this but does that mean Take That and East 17 weren't boybands because Gary Barlow and Tony Mortimer wrote all their stuff? Mortimer also played a fair bit it I think. Where's he now?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Today I was thinking about North and South - I'm a Man NOT a Boy was alright but Tarantino's New Star was fantastic and stuff cos like the cultural reference was so brilliantly baffling (Tarantino's new star the new Micael Madsen? the new Steve Buscemi? what does that mean but bolted pretty whizzy type tune as I remember. The Supernaturals they were good as well but not a boyband. I am not gonna be able to find this on Lime or slsk am I...?
