C/D: Lyrics Born

I just got his latest disc -- Same @#$%! Different Day. All the pieces seem to be in place, big guests (DJ Shadow), some passable funk and a good-time vibe, yet it feels flabby somehow. What do you folks think?

Well, it's kind of an odds & sods comp. Go with Later That Day from 2003 for a proper introduction.

Very C, btw.

when the college station plays him i find him hilarious. it's like chris knox as a rapper, so PC.

"Ya father'd have a cardiac arrest
in his cardigan vest
If he saw how his daughter gets
when she's partyin' just
like new Orleans at Mardis Gras
or Rio at Carnival
Y'all don't believe me but it's all of the above"

Yeah, like C Dolores tucker on the mic, you bet.

Anyway, "Hott Business" and "Hott People" are search for sure.

Can't comment on the new album or the remixes, but definitely search "Explosive" from 2003's Diverse album.

This sounds sort of right.

The Vibe review is bullshit. Later That Day was top shelf grandness.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 15 May 2005 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Latyrx is a must.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Sunday, 15 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely agree with the two previous posts. In fact, I don't have an album where he's featured heavily that I don't love.

Also, a side note about the song "Cold Call." There's a lot of criticism about it being a four minute skit with two dope rappers not actually rapping. This criticism is from idiots. Gab and LB are riding the beat mad nicely and busting dope rhymes there, but in a very conversational and naturalistic style. The fact that it lacks the heavy stylizations of most raps does NOT make it not rap. Clean out your ears (you know who you are) and listen closer, and with fewer expectations.

In fact, bringing unneccesary expectations is exactly where that Vibe review is wrong about "Later That Day." The guy is basically saying 'this rap album isn't all about parties and bitches and gangbangin' and sucka mcs, instead he talks about parties and relationships and work and other stuff. I am uncomfortable and confused by the idea that rap may have topics besides what Snoop and 50 emphasize. I like the remix album better because it is more like what I know.' Which is, of course, a totally retarded reason to prefer it.

at least your honest! I have to say as a fan of a lot of quannum artist, one of the reasons I like them so much is that they don't follow the trends in rap. as a group they are constantly experimenting and evolving. see Blackalicious, Maroons and latyrx for more goodness

Lyrics Born gets derided as grandpa rap (voice or subject matter, take your pick) and other similar criticisms on ILM, but I really can't fault anything he's done. Later that Day had some parts that were kind of in idle, but it also had some well-executed ideas.

Same Shit, Different Day might be classic just for rehashing most of the "I Changed My Mind" single. Search the majority of Latyrx, "Always Fine Tuning," about half of his album. I'm undecided on this new remix thing.

"Lyrics Born gets derided as grandpa rap (voice or subject matter, take your pick) and other similar criticisms on ILM,"

These sorts of criticisms seem to boil down to "shouldn't he be more like Dr. Dre or something? Rap is supposed to be a guilty pleasure with the bitch smacking and cap peeling and stuff."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's partially that, and partially that he sounds all raspy like an old guy!

Unlike, for example, Method Man and Tone Loc? Sorry, ain't buying.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. Very powerful and entertaining stage presence live - Same Shit Different Day DVD doesn't do him justice.

latyrx - "lady don't tek no" (1997)

the best thing either of these dudes were involved with.

I thought about him around Christmas time, when a colleague brought in a box of pralines to share with the office. In Balcony Beach - a solemn, thoughtful song he wrote about aging at the wise old age of 24 - Lyrics Born included the lyric "I like pralines now," as evidence that he was growing into more sophisticated flavor profiles. That has always stuck with me as one of those "rap music's memorable banalities" lines. Regardless, I love the song.

Anyway, looked him up to see if he still likes pralines, and he's got a whole cooking show on his YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuFEwujFCNdkNoLfIIOKOwYb1bHpR0v_g

I haven't watched enough of it to find any pralines, but I'm happy to see him doing so well.

Lady Don't Tek No is great, but I Changed My Mind was always my favorite. Latyrx had a lot of memorable music though. I haven't listened to any of that Soleside/Quannum stuff in a while - taking this as a sign to revisit.

I've seen him live a couple times, he's great and often uses a drummer I really like (Max from Crown City Rockers fka Mission::).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 January 2024 17:41 (two years ago)

My favorite is "Say That" - his flow on his verses is just incredible

Yeah, that's a good one. That line about griots in fiats and Koreans in Reeboks or whatever.
