Hilarious line-up.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 14 May 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I'm sure it could be good and everything, but there are a few names there of bands I am surprised are touring these days.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 14 May 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

plus a few more obscure acts like Queens of the Stone Age, Beck, Coldplay, New Order, Sigur Ros, Foo Fighters...

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Sunday, 15 May 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That's weird: I thought I saw Black Uhuru! Give me some of what I'm smoking.

"featuring Juliette Lewis afrirampo"!!

or is that lack of a hard return?

Beta (abeta), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Afrirampo are great!

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Gygax! go to this or something? (not a japanophile.)

This festival is one of my annual highlights. I've been the past 4 years and it's always been amazing. The location is unbelievably pretty, the people are always great and a lot of the things that used to annoy me about festivals just don't happen. For example, it rained for most of the weekend in 2003 and not a single person decided to throw mud at the stage. The Japanese kids carry bags for their garbage and portable ashtrays for their cigarette butts. You can also leave your laptop computer in your tent for 3 days and not have to worry about someone taking off with it. It's also a chance to see some pretty great bands and discover new ones, particularily smaller Japanese artists. The artists also feel free to just walk around the site because people tend not to bother them. I've run into members of Jane's Addiction, Ben Harper, the Chemical Brothers, Joe Strummer, Talib Kweli, Mani from Primal Scream and Michael Franti just strolling about of hanging out before or after their show. Since the original post, New Order and a few other bands have also been confirmed.

I've never been to Fuji-Rock but I'd like to go (or just at least get to Niigata). Afrirampo can be great when they want to be.

two months pass...
Anybody go to this? I was there for the entire 3 days, and it was great. I finally got to see both New Order and Dinosaur Jr, both of whom put on excellent shows. Dinosaur Jr. really do play as loudly as everyone says, and although J Mascis and Murph are showing their age a little, Lou Barlow looks exactly the same as when he first left the band. I'd also heard that New Order live shows were pretty staid affairs. However, Barney was talking a lot between songs, cracking jokes, and even sang "Krafty" in Japanese, which the audience loved. Gang of Four were very impressive as were the Asian Dub Foundation, Boom Boom Satellites, Mylo and Prefuse 73. I'm tired and broke, but it was worth it. It's not cheap, and Japan's not really convenient for most people on this board, but if you ever get a chance I highly recommend that you check this festival out.

eleven months pass...
It's that time of year again. The Happy Mondays were recently announced as special guests on the Sunday night.

Say, have you ever been to Summer Sonic? It looks so much like a terrible time, but I sure would like to see Scritti Politti this year...

Dr Benway (dr benway), Sunday, 16 July 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

it is so a terrible time. unless your idea of good fun is being herded between pens. that's the first concert I've been to where the front stage was divided into five pens each having a different colour tag. If you don't have the right tag, you're not allowed in the middle. Summer Sonic can go fuck themselves.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Sunday, 16 July 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

sorry for the language there, but Summer Sonic was the worst event i've ever been to. it makes me mad even thinking about it now.

Fuji Rock OTOH is ace.
