TS: The Idiot vs. Lust for Life

The Idiot is such a better record, I relaly don't understand why Lust for Life get's all of the praise. And, I must say, the production on Lust For Life is just atrocious.

The Idiot, all the way. Lust for Life has "Neighborhood Threat," my single favorite Iggy moment, but The Idiot is just that much more consistent and dark and skewed.

but lust for life has the funny call & response back-up vocal thing on "success". then again, the idiot has iggy's only believably sad song, "dum dum boys" (though i have alittle bit of a soft spot for the much later and much cornier "candy"). basically, the idiot is kinda disappointed and bummed out and Germanish whereas lust for life is horny and funny and American as Schlitz. depends where you and your libido are sitting, i suppose. but what do i know? my favourite solo iggy record is the universally reviled "party", esp. "pumping for jill & "sincerity" & the way he faux outrage in his voice when he sings the line "who put murph the surf on my ceiling?".

Being partial to electronics over rock dynamics, The Idiot was my preferred choice for a long time. But after a while, it's hard not to be taken in. To start with, Bowie's production on Lust For Life is hardly "atrocious" -- those big, booming Hunt Sales drums, crisp, clear sound and tight arrangements totally capture some kind of otherworldly exuberance. So do the tunes -- the title track of course, but also "Success", "Passenger", "Tonight"... I mean, there's a reason all those commercials license these tracks, people.

Do I like it better than The Idiot? I wouldn't say that -- "Sister Midnight" is one of the best things Bowie and Ig would ever do together, "Mass Production"'s production is fucking massive, and "China Girl" is the best explanation of Asian fetish I've ever heard. But Lust For Life captures something -- it exudes a kind of sinful joy that has nothing to do with "rockism" or any of that crit-shit and should be required listening for anyone coming out of rehab.

Lust For Life. No contest.

The Idiot

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 15 May 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Lust for Life is more fun. Love'em both, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 15 May 2005 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

back in the vinyl daze RCA split the difference and collapsed both LPs into one, Choice Cuts.

China Girl
Nightclubbing
Sister Midnight
Funtime
Baby
Lust for Life
Sixteen
Some Weird Sin
Neighborhood Threat

not bad, but no "Dum Dum Boys" or "Passenger" is a problem.

How true is is that Bowie plays all the guitar on "The Idiot"? I loveitloveit on "Dum Dum Boys."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 15 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i think iggy said something about bowie playing the best angry (young?) man guitar ever cos his fingers kept cramping.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How true is is that Bowie plays all the guitar on "The Idiot"? I loveitloveit on "Dum Dum Boys."

Bowie played a lot of the guitar, but not all of it. It was Phil Palmer, Ray Davies's nephew, who played guitar on Dum Dum Boys. Laurent Thibault from Magma played bass on most of The Idiot, and two French guys played drums.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Weren't Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar the principal guitarists on Idiot?

Whatever...I say Lust For Life, even tho "Tonight" is practically painful (to my ears)!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lust for Life" I guess but I really wouldn't wanna seperate them too far

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Both Lps're good evidence in defence of Iggy as best lyricist nearly ever

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

amen.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Lust For Life", "The Passenger", "Success", all >>>>>>>>>>>> anything on The Idiot

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

HERE COMES SUCCESS/HERE COMES MY CAR

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I had a dream last night that I was a pizza place with the worst jukebox in the world. And I was with a group of people from work & each of us got 6 songs to play. And I noticed that The Idiot was the only good thing in the jukebox, but a coworker had already played something from it.. But it was a special-edition enhanced CD with a second disc. The song he played was an unreleased one that was really good (although I think it was actually some twisted in my dream version of China Girl.) Most of the bonus tracks were called "2001" "2003" "2207" "2008" "2009" (.. Not every year was on it.) And there was a poster that came with it with words and space-like, Bowie/Major Tom like crap, and I got the feeling like it would be all spoken wrd stories about space with maybe a humming in the background. So The Idiot Special Edition was actually a real piece of crap all of a sudden. And then one of my other coworkers pressed "skip" on the jukebox and skipped the rest of the Iggy song and it was back to some shitty country pop.

"a table made of wood"

m coleman, Sunday, 29 April 2007 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand what's happening to me. I haven't had this album since I was a teenager. Now I have it again.

Bimble, Sunday, 29 April 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

And how did you know he was singing "a table made of wood" right behind me as I read your post?

Bimble, Sunday, 29 April 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

Rolling Stones can get the fuck out of the way.

Bimble, Sunday, 29 April 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer the idiot. The Bowie/Eno connection is a lot more evident in that one. By far Iggy's best album, solo or Stooges.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 29 April 2007 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've come around, as much as the sound of the Idiot boggles my mind in it's brilliance, and Mass Production is the best song ever, I think Lust for Life has better songs...I find it a bit more exciting and fun to sing along to at least.

Veronica Moser, Sunday, 29 April 2007 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

The Idiot

And the original "China Girl" is better than Bowie's version.

Edward Bax, Monday, 30 April 2007 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

that is one of those truths that you don't even need to acknowledge.

haitch, Monday, 30 April 2007 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...

Can't believe there's no poll OR thread for The Idiot. But anyway this is a wonderful thing:
