Music that achieves Dub-like spacial/sonic interest without being expressely dub-ish in its effects choices

Just listening on random, and Bjork's very minor "Amphibean" came around. I realised that she was achieving a very dub-like atmosphere, but that she wasn't directly employing any obvious post-Tubby/Perry "dub tricks" (unlike, say, Deadbeat--which I enjoy).

I think Arthur Russell's 'World of Echo' has some of the best dub production I've ever heard, but it doesn't exactly use the same moves--it just ends up with a similar breadth of staging and a feeling of contrast between dry and wet.

Martin Hannett to thread.

Echo + sense of wide open space + cavernous reverb + electrofunk = Autechre -- "Tri Repetae".

Ciara -- "Oh": the beat is certainly reggae, and the bassline is very dub-like.

Hannett never really plays with wet or dry, does he? Just kind of a fairly constant iciness?

'Tri Repetae' is a good call.

a feeling of contrast between dry and wet

i've heard this description of production before, but what does this mean exactly? examples, please.

john'n'chicago, Sunday, 15 May 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it refers to the effect mix on a signal.

100% dry is what your electric guitar sounds like when it comes out of a clean amp, 100% wet is what loveless sounds like.

How much of the original signal do you hear vs how much of the effect(reverb, delay, chorus, phase...) do you hear.

Huge portions of the first three Funkadelic records - esp. Free Your Mind...'s title cut. (Unless it's the result of a legitimate fuckup, rather than a deliberate production choice, in which case consider it a demonstration of the perils of musicians and producers all simultaneously tripping in the studio.)

A lot of indian pop music / film music I've heard uses excessive reverb for effect, particularly on vocal parts, giving some of that wet/dry contrast you're talking about.

"Jennifer" was the first thing to come to my mind as well

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of Holger Czukay. "Paper House" comes to mind first

steve hise, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Shadow (and similar artists) comes to mind, records where there are multiple samples and thus multiple "spaces" working at the same time.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Matty Groves" by Fairport, and lots of Steeleye Span

OHOYU, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Czukay and Conny Plank were big Scratch fans - certainly Neu!'s Für Immer has a dub thing going on.
