They can't reunite, because they're all dead.

The flip side of the other thread: this time we're looking for bands (who had at least one album that has been in print continuously since its original release) who couldn't possibly have a reunion (or play under their old name), because ALL the original members are dead now. No survivors. Solo artists and "bandonyms" don't count, either (so e.g. Muslimgauze doesn't count).

(Maybe the point, this time, is to find the most _recent_ example of this.)

Is there one guy left from the Exploding Hearts? (RIP, dudes)

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

T.Rex

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

There's just one left from Coltrane's classic quartet. Likewise Miles' first great quintet (I think)

the Berlin Philharmonic

ramones are pretty close!

From a quick run-through of the rock & roll hall of fame inductees, it appears that everybody in the Temptations from 1961 to 1968 is gone, save for Otis Williams; Bill Pinkney is the only surviving member of the original Drifters; Carl Gardner the only surviving member of the Coasters; and the Platters still have two, Herb Reed, who still tours, and Zola Taylor. Not sure about the Ink Spots.

Ramones still have two drummers and a bass player alive, they could headline a festival with Lightning Bolt and DFA1979.

Everyone in the Modern Jazz Quartet is dead.

are any of badfinger still alive?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 16 May 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Badfinger still tours, or they did a few years ago.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Monday, 16 May 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Likewise Miles' first great quintet (I think)

Which one do you mean? The Philly Joe Jones/Paul Chambers/Red Garland/Coltrane/Miles quintet is dead and gone, but Jimmy Cobb is still hangin' from the KoB group. Thankfully, 3/5ths of the 60s quintet is still around.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pretty sure that all the original members of Glen Miller's orchestra are dead by now.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 16 May 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I meant the Kind of Blue quintet. And, I thought Philly Joe was the one left, so I got that wrong.

Oh, well.

the rolling stones.

lucy furr, Monday, 16 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And Madness were actually sane!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if there is a good recent example, Douglas. If so, it would have to involve a horrible accident or tragedy. People generally don't all drop dead around the same time... at least, not yet.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And Madness were actually sane!

You need to watch the "House Of Fun" and "Our House" videos once more if you insist on claiming that :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The entire line-up on Mingus Oh Yeah - Roland Kirk, Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, Doug Watkins, Dannie Richmond - are now gone. So the record has become a historical document. Eerie.

Re. MJQ: you sure about Connie Kay?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

According to AMG, Connie Kay died in '94.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock n Roll Trio: The one who wasn't a Burnette died a couple of years ago.

George & Ira Gershwin.

The Million Dollar Quartet. Only Jerry Lee still lives.

mike a, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I seriously don't think there's one rock band in the last 35 years where all the members have died. Ramones, Exploding Hearts, Beach Boys...there's always one or two still standing.
