I think "Don't Worry Baby" might be the greatest single ever.

By who?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Beach Boys, obviously.

PB, Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't obvious, obviously.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

To say this when "Wouldn't it Be Nice" / "God Only Knows" exists...

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronnie and Brian there's still time!

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 16 May 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Ronnie's version. It doesn't displace the original, but it gives you a real sense of what the original could've been. (Phil wouldn't let her do it, right?)

second only to Then He Kissed Me...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 16 May 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the guitar stabs on this track, deeply.

Bob Crain (bobcrain), Monday, 16 May 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Thirded only to Be My Baby

Jimmy Mod, Sultan of Sexxitime (ModJ), Monday, 16 May 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the best beach boys single ever, i'll give you that much.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 16 May 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Enough Beach Boys threads already.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it is, PB! Don't listen to these yaks.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(Well, except the ones that agree.)

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda prefer the flipside

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The A-side too, as I recall

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the student demonstration song?

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's "I Get Around"

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Get Around"'s nice, but it doesn't make my spirit weep and soar above the heavens.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Was "The Warmth Of The Sun" ever a single?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't think so.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Love Bryan Ferry's cover too.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 16 May 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Get Around"'s nice, but it doesn't make my spirit weep and soar above the heavens.

Exactly right about "Don't Worry Baby" -- it packs an emotional wallop that you rarely see in pop music.

As much as I love Pet Sounds, can you imagine what it would have been like if "DWB" and "Good Vibrations" were on the album instead of "Sloop John B." and those awful instrumental mood pieces?

PB, Monday, 16 May 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I just recently realized it's about drag racing. And the most beautiful thing about it is, is there any doubt that everything does not, in fact, work out all right, in fact goes explosively wrong?

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a fine song
but it's nowhere near the best,
even for Wilson

I would put any
of the drag-racing songs
WAY over this one

even "In My Room"
or Marcello's suggestion
both hit my heart more

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

PB even more unwitting reactionaries'd "dislike" it

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"awful instrumental mood pieces?"

You're crazy.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've yet to meet a person who actually enjoys those songs....they sound like cheesy Love Boat-type TV themes.

PB, Monday, 16 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

nice to meet you.

Yep, I read that in the liner notes to some cheesy hot-rod compilation I bought years ago and it totally colored my appreciation for the song. Knowing that it's a drag racing song adds a certain depth that you don't hear if you think it's just a feel-good love ballad.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to think this was the greatest single ever, and now i... don't.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)
