I love them all. If I had to chose one (today), I still think it would be Tyranny >>Hearts of oak.
Shake the sheets is still great also.

Tyranny of Distance > Shake the Sheets > Hearts of Oak* > Set You Free > 8 A.M. All Day

* I could probably be kinder to Hearts for the songs but I think the productions/performances are pretty lacking

Hearts Of Oak > Tyranny > Shake The Sheets

Hearts Of Oak has the best songs, and I love the production. His most diverse album.

I dunno, it's hard to pick a best albums b/c (even though I love Ted for many personal reasons and have seen him many times) I find his albums HUGELY hit and miss.

Songs:

Timorous Me > Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone? > Little Dawn > Under the Hedge > Walking To Do > Hearts of Oak > Angel's Share > Vien > Bridges & Squares > The High Party

Hearts of Oak = Shake the Sheets > Tyranny of Distance

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The first half of Tyranny of Distance is unimpeachable for me, so I'll go with that.

Shake Da Sheetz

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 16 May 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I will rep for the "experimental" first solo album, because someone has to. Also, because I'm XTREME and ICONOCLASTIC and shiz. Also, because I like its fuckedupedness.

I've never quite understood the appeal for this guy but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I have a copy of an album with a really good intro song that goes "Laying on the table for to welcome you back home/Calling on the angels for to lighten up your load", but the rest of the songs remind me of the Manics. What album and song is this?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 16 May 2005 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the "Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead" mini-album, I think.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And the song you're referring to is the title track.

Oh, and Hearts of Oak = Tyranny of Distance = Shake the Sheets (sorry).

8 AM All Day

The solo stuff is pretty dreadful IMO.

mcd (mcd), Monday, 16 May 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta go with Shake the Sheets, although I think all of his stuff is fantastic.

cdwill, Monday, 16 May 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Tyranny of Distance>Shake The Sheets>Hearts Of Oak.

Tyranny is way above the others too.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ted Leo is great, but I can rarely find the energy to sit trough an entire album, that's why my vote goes to the "Treble In Trouble" EP, it's just the right amount of punch in a reasonable amount of time.

Jena (JenaP), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tyranny" for "Under Your Hedge," which is about beating up on Robert Pollard.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone post the lyrics for "Under Your Hedge"? I like it when indie dudes get all pissy with each other.

darin (darin), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the Pollard story fairly recently and I still can't really figure out how the lyrics are about that. I mean it sounds like kind of a sweet love song for the most part.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

when i heard chisel for the first time in high school it was like a bomb dropping, clearing everything in its path. i still love 8 AM All Day and found his solo career pretty disappointing, though Hearts of Oak had some moments.

j fail (cenotaph), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ted was interviewed by my college radio station (where he DJed when he was an undergrad there back in the early 90s) a few years back, and he confirmed the story. I think he had mantioned in a previous interview that the song was about an altercation at Oberlin w/ another band, and somebody put 2 and 2 together.

PB, Monday, 16 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

really, I'm just making my "requisite appearance on Ted Leo thread" post
