J, have you heard "Hamster My Dear" by Original Hamster? (Portamento faux "acoustic guitar" sounds beg to be called "quirky": this is a Tigerbeat person's hi-fi glitchy folk-tone arrangement of the song, which always leaves me wishing I had the free time to sit around programming out all the changes and glitches to a track that will mostly be a joke either way.)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Good work Mike - but these totals need to be divided by the total number of Beatles songs in each year to get a true picture of... something.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. I was originally counting number of songs per year (rather than votes), and then I decided it was giving a false picture. But, since the figures are to hand and it will only take a minute:

1962 - 1
1963 - 4
1964 - 12
1965 - 12
1966 - 9
1967 - 7
1968 - 14
1969 - 6
1970 - 3
1995 - 2

If you really want to divide the first figure by the second, then you get:

1962 - 2
1963 - 2.5
1964 - 1.167
1965 - 1.917
1966 - 1.889
1967 - 2.286
1968 - 1.571
1969 - 1.167
1970 - 2
1995 - 1

Oh yes, that's MUCH clearer. Hooray for stats!

Just imagine 'though; if we could actually post graphs!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant dividing the number of votes (or songs mentioned, I guess - either) by the total number of songs the Beatles released in each year, to give some kind of 'impact coefficient'. I mean - there are 23 votes for 1965 songs, but perhaps this is skewed by their releasing more songs in 1965 to choose from.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Impact coeffiecients! I LOVE IT!

New songs released by year (including cover versions, not including re-releases):

1962 - 2
1963 - 32
1964 - 33
1965 - 32
1966 - 16
1967 - 23
1968 - 34
1969 - 25
1970 - 12
(1995 gets silly.)

Impact coefficients (by total votes):

1962 - 1
1963 - 0.31
1964 - 0.42
1965 - 0.72
1966 - 1.06
1967 - 0.78
1968 - 0.65
1969 - 0.28
1970 - 0.5

Impact coefficients (by number of songs mentioned):

1962 - 0.5
1963 - 0.13
1964 - 0.36
1965 - 0.38
1966 - 0.56
1967 - 0.3
1968 - 0.41
1969 - 0.24
1970 - 0.25

COnclusion: whichever way you look at it, the otherwise quiet year of 1966 punches above its weight, whereas the industrious year of 1963 noticeably underperforms.

-- mike t-diva (mikejl...), May 17th, 2005.

Would this mean more if we were picking our favourites? Nice though the tale of Desmond, his barrow and the marketplace are, I'm not under the illusion that its their best song.

Amiii Stewart (Amiii Stewart), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's interesting that the two most commonly mentioned songs are effectively solo McCartney recordings (of course Lennon's harmonies on Rigby send it to the next level). I guess I hardly think of either of them as "Beatles" songs.

theophilus jones (theophilus), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's interesting that the two most commonly mentioned songs are effectively solo McCartney recordings

Even though most people seem to have skipped his most famous solo recording.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The high instant-recognition factor for "Blackbird" totally baffles me, I have to say. An inevitable statistical blip of no great consequence, or is it something more than that? (How did it do in the "Rank The White Album" thread?)
